*shrugs* Animation wise I think it looks way better than anything we had in the last two games, and I don't really care about the "lore" behind such things. As those are contrivances that the writers can alter at any time for any reason they see fit, both as far as I'm concerned, and ya know, functionally as a thing that often happens.
Please remove the Spellbook casting!

The thing that makes me dislike the animation is the fact that it's floating, if the mage were to hold it in one hand and cast whatever it was casting using the staff then I would be all for it.
Wow, I actually realized what I hated so much about the "book", it was the fact that it's floating. Haha.. >.>

Oh my god. You have to carry around spellbooks if you cast spells! What if you forget one???? I mean, if spellbooks were good enough for Willow, Hermione, and basically all of the Disney witches, they are good enough for me, damn it!

Anyone else find it strange that Dragon Age has gone down the "spellbook" road. I always play a mage and seeing a mage using a spellbook in the earlier gameplay looks really... underwhelming. It's so cheesy and definitely not suited to be something in Dragon Age.
It's like seeing mages ride broomsticks or using wands (There was even an Easter egg teasing this!). It doesn't fit well with how the game is meant to be portrayed, as a dark fantasy. It'll also make the mages look inexperienced and basic, I want my mage to stand out, not to be reading a book whenever he wants to cast a spell. So please Mike, Mark, David and the rest of you guys, reconsider this?
EDIT:I think the animation is what bugged me the most. Seeing it floating around is what makes it look out of place, If the mage were to hold it while casting the spell then I would be more for it rather than against.

I actually don't like a lot of the visual fidelity on abilities we've seen so far. I find both the spellbook animation and the quake one when he hits the ground very goofy looking. It's high fantasy but those 2 abilities give it a very cartoonish look that I don't think Bioware is going for. I didn't really like the chain animation we saw in the gameplay trailer either where he does his best impression of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat only he decides to get up close and personal instead.
Minor complaints but something I'd love to see Bioware work on. It kinda hurts the immersion when you laugh seeing a spell animation in a dark fantasy where you're supposed to be tearing enemies down. If these are my biggest complaints about DAI then Bioware is doing a great job building an epic game.

I like the idea to use spell books to lean new spells and for the first time using that said spell I would like a cool animation of learning from a book just once

you have a very odd definition of cartoony... I really wish people would stop using cartoony/animey when they don't like something. more so when we're taking about magic in a fantasy game. I don't know what it is you people are expecting but your probably not going to get it.

Really? I thought the spell book and casting animations looked great, definitely much more interesting than the staff animations, also while I am usually one of the first to argue that the Dragon Age series isn't dark fantasy how does a grimoire not fit a dark fantasy setting?

I think some folks should go back through this thread and find the part where Mr. Gaider effectively shut down the idea that people seem to be in an uproar over. I don't understand why folks are still debating this.

So we should be in an uproar over the fact that player mages wont get super awesome spellbook animations?

If it's something you feel strongly about, then by all means, do so. I doubt it would be any less odd though.

It looked like a cheesy "spellbook" at first until Gaider confirmed otherwise. Still though, a floating book? Eh.
