Some of my cloth mages wear the Warden Commander boots for mana and the Helm of Honnleath for good luck (and also as a sign that they are battle mages, not civilians like Wynne and Morrigan). So you could say they are wearing armour all the time.
Armour can be useful at times even for a cloth mage. There are some encounters where the Warden gets put in front of loads of archers, and that can hurt plenty if you don't have the Sleep spell or not all of the archers fit into the spell's AoE. Wade's is extremely useful during the fiery finale of Ser Otto's quest, and for inferno hopping (especially if there are bossy ogres in the picture). The Corruption helmet is indispensable for Archie's do.
So that's a definite YAY, with the proviso that my mages wear robes most of the time and don proper armour only on a small handful of occasions.

Armor should be the standard for just about anyone living in Thedas.

Provisional Yay. Vestment of the Seer gives a decent boost to your magic stats, but armor runes make you want to make the switch. I just wish you could have Magic runes the way you do with Willpower.

Only at the expense of manna.
The more heavily armoured you are, the less manna you have to spend.
That way there is a trade off between protection versus spell casting.

With all the new clothing mods on Nexus, my mages can wear something new every time I play. (I am out of Likes at the moment, I'll catch them up later)

I would actually like to design armour from scratch in the game.
From the colour of the armour, to the shape, to the patterns, material, tiny details etc.

I have a hard time believing that not one mage thought about wearing non-cloth armor. \
I demand plate!

So very ugly. The colors. The styles. I actually prefer the plain black-ish robes the mages (bad mages) wear in skyrim over these hideous things. And that's saying a lot.
I usually put my mage in the new phoenix armour scout version. It's so cute and if mages are meant to go with light armor then that's pretty close but very stylish.
I don't really see the logic behind a mage not wearing some kind of armor. I get that it has to do with strength, but logically speaking, WHO would walk around in a light cloth when they are going to be doing battle? Now if they had some sort of shield as a base that served at least to be as strong as armor (not that gross rock armor either), then it would make sense. But mages are squishy and they aren't carrying weapons so for them, they need armor just as much if not more than warriors. Rogues go light because they need to move fast and be agile and heavy armor isn't stealthy. But mages are neither stealthy nor particularly agile. In fact, the movement warriors do require far more agility than simply pointing a staff. So robes really are only old school ideas that everyone seems to stick with when logically speaking a form of light armor would at least be more sensible. At least what rogues wear. Something on that level. But even a step up since they are a target that not protected and while there are a few shields available, they do not last and use up precious mana. If I were a mage, I'd want some kind of light armor - sensible that looks good (which most of the armor in the game doesn't).
And while I'm on the subject of armor - didn't it occur to anybody at BW just how unsafe and dangerous those massive shoulder plates that come up to the middle of their heads are? Truly, fall on your side, and it's a good chance that those big shoulder armors will give you a lethal concussion. If you have a helmet on, that still would not protect you enough. In fact, I suspect metal banging against metal like that would make it MORE dangerous. I have see a lot of armors in my day, but none quite so stupidly designed where it looks like the armor itself poses more risk than not...

The best robes-Reapers, Vestment-they carry big pluses to armor.+10 for Vestment, I think +12 for Reaper's. That's as good, maybe better than ordinary light dragon armor. Add in Rock Armor, and that's as good as any heavy armor in the game. You don't lose that much by wearing robes.
It's fatigue that determines how much mana you use for things. You'll generally have more mana with robes than armor, but if you have a fatigue reducing armor set, it's as good for a mage as wearing robes.

This is actually logical because if armor protects you then you would need to waste less mana on protection spells and could use it for destroying the enemy. Also less mana on healing.

Personally, I'm not speaking of the technical aspects of the game. I'm speaking of it from a logical standpoint. It doesn't make sense for mages to dress so light. In the circle sure, but also outside of the cicle, running about with big staffs and robes.... well they've made that joke in both games haven't they? Why not just wear signs that say 'look at me! I am a mage!' Nevermind that not wearing armor doesn't seem very wise if you are doing battle quite regularly.

I don't recall hearing about the winter forge or I may know it as something else. What is the winter forge?
