I read this topic, which mostly answers my question, but I wanted to ensure I understood completely, and I didn't want to necro-post.

As I understand it, Jack's romance option in ME 3 doesn't get "locked in" until you see her in purgatory. Does this mean that confirming your relationship with her when you first encounter her at the school doesn't effect you other relationships? Basically, what I mean is, would this work:

Romance Liara in ME1

Romance Jack in ME2

Confirm romance with Liara at the start of ME3

Confirm romance with Jack at the school in ME3

Avoid Jack all together at purgatory

End the game with Liara as your paramour, and Jack as having an "unspoken went our separate ways" situation?

I think Jack is a more compelling character, but past the school and the Citadel DLC, Liara's scenes are much more powerful in ME3.

Lock-in is Lock-in. If you don't lock-in with Jack (Purgatory) and do lock-in with Liara it will be as if Jack never happened.

Let me take this further: if you lock-in with Liara before meeting Jack in Purgatory, then the conversation in Purgatory will be as if you never romanced Jack at all.

Thanks, that's what I thought. So Liara>Jack>Liara it is!  :)

Keep in mind that Liara's lock-in conversation is on the Citadel AFTER the coup attempt, and therefore becomes available at roughly the same time as Jack's.
