Rift mage probably but I'm not sure yet. My first inquisitor will be a dalish mage so knight enchanter is too circle mage-y for her, that's for sure.

Rift Mage or Necromancer

Necromancer and Rift Mage both sound interesting- I'll probably go with whichever has a more scientific-ish feel to it, since I picture my Mage-Inquisitor as something of a scholar. Necromancy fits into the somewhat morbid/fatalistic view I foresee for her, seeing magic as a dangerous disease and mages the first victims, but rift mage just sounds cool.

What do you guys assume rift mages do?

Unless Rift Mage can summon demons I'm probably going to go Lich king mode with a necromancer and raise an army of the dead to rule the world. Would rather have an army of demons though.

I dunno, I have no idea what any of them are like but my first character will probably be a necromancer.

I'm going to rule Necromancer out for the first play through (and second because I know I'll be a Knight Enchanter in that one). I'm leaning towards Rift Mage but honestly we know next to nothing about it.
Presumably it involves the same power the Inquisitor uses to seal the tears in the veil. For combat purposes that might that mean we're going to be summoning demons and or spirits for offence / buffing respectively. Dunno.

Necromancer all day long. However I'm going to be a super nice necromancer.

I hope it's an illusionist type of caster.
That's just what I thought of when I saw the icon.

Knight Enchanter, defs. I crave a balance between magic and martial might.

Rift Mage probably. But the deciding factor really is just seeing the animations in-game. I enjoy dramatic, impressive magic flair most importantly.

At the moment, Rift Mage is the most intriguing to me.

Heck yes! That's my character right there!
*Inquisitor walks up to a woman crying over a dead body.*
Vince: Why are you crying ma'am?
Woman: He was my husband. He died trying the stop a robber.
Vince: I'm so sorry.
Woman: I believe in the Maker I know I'm going to hold him in my arms again.
Vince: It's your lucky day you don't have to wait too long.
*Vince touches the corpse's head and it sits up wrapping its arms around the woman and starts to attack her*
Vince: You're welcome.
*Woman starts screaming for help*
Vince: I... I uh said you're welcome.
*Woman continues to scream as the Inquisitor stands up and starts to walk away with a sad look on his face*
Vince: No one ever likes my gifts.

Apart from some maybe very specific circumstances, there are no undead in the classic sense in Thedas. All undead the player sees are corpses possessed by low level demons.
Which makes it interesting that Necromancer is one of the choices, since the name itself is a bit of a misnomer.

I wonder if Blood Magic will be available in the Mage's normal list of talents...

I'm not even sure if the undead necessarilly need to be demons (they are when blood mages use it, I suppose). The school of spirit had corpse raising, but the Spirit school is described as just "general" Fade based. It could be that they're just minor spirits like wisps.
In any case, I don't want to play a mage who keeps ripping open the veil more and more. lol. Sounds like it defeats the purpose of the plot (or maybe you could purposely just bring the world to it's bitter end, like Morrigan says). I hope there's something more to these specializations. I'm not in the mood to screw the world up further. I already played DA2.

I was planning on playing a 2H Reaver Warrior on my first playthrough, but Knight Enchanter might just change my opinion.
If that's not the case I'll go with Rift Mage on my second one.

I want to be a necromancer but so few games get it right.
This is what i think too, probably will go knight enchanter from the description, but if they get the necromancer right, then ill go for it... rift mage is at the bottom, mainly cause i have no clue what spells it includes yet
