I have just received my brand spanking new Mass Effect game, fresh from the post (I even changed my profile pic). I have patched it, but I can't register it. I can't find a registration link on the bioware site. Likely because it's an old game. But that's not what I want to ask about. I have a few questions. And please no spoilers. Call me old fashioned, but all I want to know are a few things to optimize my playing experience.

  • Can you make a custom Shepard?
  • Can you romance everyone?
  • Should one strive to be a paragon?
  • Should one do every assignment?
  • Is it important to listen to all "codex" conversations?

I have reached the bit where he gets the Normandy. Any help would be appreciated.

1) Yes, you can customise appearance / specialty / personal history at the start. You upgrade your stats as you level up and can purchase armour / weapons / upgrades at merchants (I recommend buying licenses from merchants).

2) No, not everyone sadly. And there are gender restrictions on who can be romanced, too.

3) No. That's personal preference. The game is equally enjoyable regardless which moral philosophy you adhere to. Also adds replayability. Go with the responses you like the most or that fit your style.

4) They are all pretty awesome, so why not? You don't "have" to, but they're there and they're fun.

5) If you mean codex entries, you don't "have" to, but they can provide more information/clarity about things you are unsure about as you progress (like the history of the galaxy or alien species).

Go with the responses you feel are best. I don't see the fun in just mindlessly clicking on the blue/top option every time, but that's just me.

It really depends on what are your intentions regarding gameplay.

If you want to unlock more achievements, then yes, in a single play you should strive to be more renegade, while in another, more paragon.

There are also 2 missions that open only if you have a high moral score, one for each direction.

The codex is not essential, but it does provide a lot of interesting info about the lore.

As for romance, female shep can only romance kaidan and liara. Male shep can romance ash and liara.

I suggest you use a soldier in your first play. It´s the easiest class to start, and the only one able to use all guns.

You might try http://www.masseffect2faces.com/ .  It even has an ME2 to ME1 conversion tool.

I only have mass effect 1! I have a few more questions:

  • Can one quickly recharge the mako's shields?
  • Do you flirt with the romance companions or do they start it?
  • Do some companions prefer paragons or renegades?
  • What are untrained weapons?
  • Which is the best gun to use?

Anything you can say would be helpful.

1) Not in an usual way. The "normal" way for the Mako to recharge its shields is to not receive any damage for some time. Though you can instantly recharge the shields by retreating from combat, saving and reloading the game.

2) I'm not sure but while you can at some points flirt with potential love interests, you continue the romance sub-plot by simply talking with them.

3) Actually, while companions can have different moral opinions, it's not much of a big deal. They won't dislike or hate you for being more Paragon or Renegade.

4) Untrained weapons are weapons that your class isn't specialized with. What it means is that you'll get a penalty in accuracy for that weapon, you cannot zoom in with this weapon and you cannot put skill points into this weapon.

5) Depends on the class you're using. If you meant "which model of guns is the best" though, that would be the Spectre weapons which you'll get access to after earning 1 million credits (and getting the "Rich" achievement).

You can also check the Mass Effect Wiki for some more info.

I am afraid of the wiki. Sometimes unseen spoilers are slipped in. I even got upset because my eye accidentally glanced at the back cover and saw the word "traitorous Saren". :(

My companions (or rather complainions) are showing no inclination of liking me.

I am a dragon age person you see- and the people there were odvious with their flirting :D. But everyone in Mass effect doesn't say things like:

  • "Ye-es";
  • "It is so cold in my tent- all alone";
  • "I love you- that wasn't too soon was it?";
  • or even: "I fancy many things, gold, finery - would it be wrong to say I fancied you?".

Sorry-got off topic. I meant to say: When do these people start getting odvious?

I just enjoy it when people like me. Romance is cheesy in DA ^_^. Maybe it will be cheesier in Mass Effect. :D

Thanks

No problem. Well it's kinda hard to explain without mentioning spoilers. Basically just talk to everyone in between missions and assignments and you should be fine. The most obvious point will be when a potential love interest will ask you if you're interested in the other potential love interest.

Cool! Why can I only post in this forum? Must I play the game through origin?

I don´t think you can register an old game like ME1 anymore. Unless you have the edition from the trilogy pack. Talk to a moderator.

Another piece of advice while playing ME1: Always have in mind that this game is not really a shooter in the conventional sense. The game does not care that you´re good on Battlefield or COD. Your accuracy will be mostly determined by the number of points you apply to your proficiency with a certain kind of weapon, as well as the stats from the weapon and whatever incremental items you´re using on it. This is a rpg in which you shoot manually, but the hits are calculated in rpg-like fashion.

A person who is terrible at shooters will score hits if the character was well developed, while a good player at shooters might still miss several shots because the preponderant aspect of the game is its rpg system.

In ME2 and 3 this is drastically altered, and at least when it comes to weapon use, the series becomes more faithful to the shooter genre, while rpg only plays a hole in the story and also in secondary powers. You can increase the shooter experience in later games with rpg elements, but in me1, this is a rpg dressed as a shooter.

The game is making me sad. :(

I can't control the mako because it keeps driving into lava. I can't get a direct answer from anyone. I look around planets and all I find are debris and weird prothean orbs with key holes. The dying sequence is making me dispirited. I never know when the geth dudes are going to materialise and I never know where to go.

  • I am hopelessly lost in the universe.
  • The graphics depress me.
  • The text is upsetting and tiny (Yeah, it's old stuff here).
  • My character isn't good-looking. HE'S PRACTICALLY BALD! :( But he has nice eyes. Pity the graphics mess them up. I understand why people aren't showing interest in him.

Thanks for your answers to my queries. I just wish I could find a way to get past these annoyances.

Not that its a bad game. Really good for a game like that. I mean I play Lara Croft, so it's not completely alien to me. Still wish he could jump though. Ooh, and climb poles, swing on vines.....

I bet Lara would do a better job against saren. Heee grappling hook! :D

I can't control the mako because it keeps driving into lava.

It takes a little getting used to.  Especially considering the dampers are funky so it alternates between a bit too bouncy and nearly no suspension damp.  I don't know if this was supposed to follow the in game gravity modeling, or was just because they made it whonky.

I can't get a direct answer from anyone.

On what?  The game is basically a big mystery with little sidequest mysteries thrown in.

The dying sequence is making me dispirited. I never know when the geth dudes are going to materialise...

Just need to learn the missions.  Also usually your combat scanner is some help in this regard.  It is usually jammed right before you run into Geth.

I look around planets and all I find are debris and weird prothean orbs with key holes.... I never know where to go... I am hopelessly lost in the universe.

That's why I have maps of every planet in ME1.  If you are trying to find all the minerals and random collection things, it takes an inordinate amount of time.  If you know where everything is it still takes time, but not nearly as much.

The various things to collect are minerals (UNC Valuable Minerals), Matriarch Delinaga's writings (UNC Asari Writings), Turian emblems (UNC Turian Insignias), and Salarian artifacts (UNC Signs of Battle for ID tags and League of One medallions).  You get xp for finding each one, but unless you are going for a completionist run you don't really need to find any of them.  Otherwise the map on each planet shows where the mission objective is with an exclamation point typically.  You can set waypoints by clicking on the map.

If you are on PC there are some texture mods that might be of interest to you.
