Now that I know I can romance IB in my first run he'll probably be a staple for that run. Then whoever I romance next will be a staple in my second run. And so on and so on.

Hm... from what I've been reading about these characters I can see myself going with...
Elven (warrior, mage, or rogue...)
Cassandra
Sera
Dorian
Solas might also be a good choice... I'd probably use the Grey Warden from time to time as well, but you never know.

I really don't know what exact class I'm going with yet, so I don't know which companions would be best in terms of their specializations. I'm hoping to get a lot more information about them in terms of what each might be best for, since I'm sure each will have a turn. The ones I'm looking forward to the most are Sera and the city elf/red jenny thing and Blackwall to touch base with the wardens, with IB thrown in for reality checks and a possible LI, Solas and Cole for fade/spirit lore, and Varric for Varric.

Right now I'm thinking:
Inquisitor - Elven male - Mage - Necromancer specialization
Iron Bull - Warrior tank
Cole - Melee rogue
Vivienne - Support mage OR Sera - Ranged rogue

Since I now know Elf Inquisitors will be Dalish, I'm certain im going to be a Female Elf Mage Inquisitor, (You gotta deal with it Thedas, Dalish Power!) I'm taking Varric, Iron Bull, and Cassandra.

For my first playthrough
Male Elf Inquisitor (Rift Mage)
Iron Bull
Sera
Dorian
I will switch out Sera for Varric, and Dorian for Vivienne sometimes. Iron Bull will be my romance so he will be in the party most of the time! I'll still use the other companions sometimes but mainly those 5.

Looks like I'll be going as follows:
Dalish Mage Inquisitor (likely Knight Enchanter, unless the other two specializations look really interesting [and if they involve the Fade, they very well might])
Cassandra (LI, if it pans out. If not, I expect the progression to go from wary ally to trusted friend)
Dorian
Cole
If it's plot-relevant, I'll swap out whomever needs replacing from the same class (e.g. Iron Bull takes Cassandra's slot, Vivienne takes Dorian's, Varric or Sera takes Cole's, and so on).

Inquisitor - Human Male Two-Handed Warrior
Cassandra - Tank - LI
Vivenne - Need a Healer, guessing she can heal as she's a Mage.
Varric - Cuz knowing Bioware only Rogues can open Locks.

If I feel that a quest may benefit from having a certain character then they'll be swapped in if not previously used.
One thing I've found with previous Dragon Age games is that my Love Interest always becomes a must have in my party; what can I say I become attached... Actually I think this stems from the fact that there is always some interesting banter about the relationship between the party members and I want to get to know said Love Interest more.
The same can actually be said for any of the characters I find interesting. If I want to get to know them better I will likely put them in my party (I'm looking at you Cole).

I'm definitely going to use them all. But for now my fantastic four looks like this: Bull, Blackwall and Varric (Inquisitor=not a mage). There is no mage in there! I know. It's a problem. Oh well I shall see how it's gonna work.

1st playthrough
Difficulty: Nightmare
Romance: Cassandra
[Single Target Melee DPS] Inquisitor (male rogue assassin)
[Melee Tank] Cassandra
[Healer/Support/Buffs] Solas
[AOE Ranged DPS + Control] Dorian
---
[Single target ranged DPS] Varric
VS dragons, bosses and situations with little to no adds - Varric trades in for Dorian.
Strategy:
As Im playing Nightmare, my strategy is "outlast the enemy". DPS is always secondary for every party in the group except my rogue.
Cassandra built to survive/mitigate a meteor to her face with taunts and such.
Solas is the group healer + buffer + support spellcaster, his only job is to keep the others up and strengthen them.
Dorians first job is to CC/Control the enemy, his second objective is AOE damage spells.
Varric will be traded for Dorian in encounters VS dragons and/or other bossfights where single target consistent damage is needed.

For my first playthrough, I'm going to be playing as a male elven mage. I'm going to bring Solas along for even more magic, and also in the hope that my Inquisitor will be able to romance him. XD The rogue spot will go to Varric, because Varric. And the warrior position will be filled by Blackwall.
Yes, I realize that makes for an almost entirely ranged party except for Blackwall, but I don't care.

I'm torn between two possible squads. I know I need a rogue, so Cole's a shoe-in. Same with Dorian, because I need at least one mage and he's awesome. So that leaves the Inquisitor and one other open slot. Which is where things get tricky.
I'd like for the third slot to be Iron Bull, which means I could have my Inquisitor be a Mage or a tank warrior and still have a balanced party in addition to awesome banter (since I'm assuming IB is a DPS warrior like Sten). Thing is, none of those three would be my LI for the run, and I feel like a spot should go to them. The two I'm thinking about right now are Cassandra and Josephine. Josie would make things easy, since she's an advisor and can't be in the field, but Cassandra is... well, Cassandra. Which is where the second possible party comes in.
Cole and Dorian are still shoe-ins, the Inquisitor is specced as a DPS Warrior or Mage, Cassandra tanks. Which, unfortunately, leaves out Iron Bull, but RP'ing must have its sacrifices.
The good thing is knowing that both possible outcomes are still likely to be awesome parties. It's just that I want to run through the whole game with one constant squad as much as I can, making exceptions of course for character-specific quests or portions of the plot that mandate using a specific character.
The bad thing is that I'd have to make two separate runs of the game to accommodate both teams. Which isn't bad in a 'fun' sense at all, just in a "very, very delayed gratification" sense.
My hope is that the time between now and November will allow me to nail down exactly how I want to proceed, hopefully helped along by the continued reveal of character information.
Yeah, I have way too much time to think about this, clearly.

Difficulty - Hard
Inquisitor - Human Mage / Controller + Buffs
Dorian - Ranged AOE DPS / Love Interest
Blackwall - Melee Tank (hopefully on par with Aveline from DA: II)
Sera - Rogue Archer DPS / Chest Unlocker
I will switch Sera out for quest plot required companions then just back for chests.

Here's what I'm going to be running with mostly.
Inquisitor: male warrior with a 2 handed sword
Cassandra
Varric
Vivienne, Solas, or Dorian as the mage in the group (haven't decided which one)
I'm essentially going to be running with Cassandra all the time since she is the love interest of my inquisitor.

Depends on what my Inquisitor is (warrior, rogue or mage) and depends on which characters I like the most, I'm pretty sure though that Sera, Varric and IB will be regulars in my party

Romances signified by *. Characters in the party who don't get along with each other (according to the official character profile interviews) have an X next to each of their names. I like a bit of drama in the party banter... These are just my best guesses right now, though (especially the last 3).
Playthrough 1 Human male rogue archer, Cassandra*, Blackwall, Solas
Playthrough 2 Female Qunari Knight Enchanter, Iron Bull*X, Cole, VarricX
Playthrough 3 Male elf sword and shield, Dorian*X, Sera, VivienneX
Playthrough 4 Female dwarf two-handed, Dorian, VarricX, CassandraX (Cullen*)
Playthrough 5 Male Qunari dualist, Iron BullX, SolasX, Vivienne (Josephine*)
Playthrough 6 Female elf necromancer, Sera*X, Blackwall, ColeX

With:
Blackwall - tank, and he is my first choice for a romance if he becomes available
Solas - mage, I always seem to use noncircle mages.
Either Dorian or Cole , I am not yet sure. Rogue is my best class and Cole is very interesting, but so is Dorian. Then again I am not particularly fond of tevinter mages....
Romance - Cullen (if blackwall is not available)

Vivienne
Dorian
Cassandra
And I'll alternate characters based on whoever I think will be most useful or add to dialogue at the time.
Just realized I have too many mages, so I'll probably NOT make my character a mage.
And I do need a tank... Heck, I could be the tank. But I also need a rogue, and I don't want to be a rogue. I've been a rogue in both DAO and DA2.
