Human female Mage (Cullen romance planned)- generally pro Chantry, pro Circle with some more rights for mages. Very distrustful of qunari and anything involving spirits/demons or blood magic after what happened in Kirkwall. Generally supports restoring Thedas to stability.

Cassandra- I think they share similar methods and goals and so should get along

Iron Bull- Agent of the Qun, an enemy. Probably killed or not recruited.

Blackwall- Not enough information to judge really, probably gets along ok.

Varric- Unless significantly changed from DA2 probably easy to get along with for most Inquisitors

Sera- Different philosophies, this Inquis is more "big picture"

Cole- Probably not recruited- after all the demons/abominations/Anders in Kirkwall will be hard to gain trust

Vivienne- Should get along pretty well, similar views

Dorian- Necromancy is a pretty suspect magic and being from Tevinter doesn't help things

Solas- A hedge mage? Probably demon bait

So that leaves something like:

Inquis

Cassandra

Varric

Vivienne or Blackwall

Other Inquisitors will have different views, being more anti-Chantry and less suspicious of Qunari and such.

Tough choice...

Inquisitor (human male, class undecided but probably rogue)

Cassandra

Blackwall

4th member undecided.

I'd prefer not to have some bloody witch with me (all mages can burn as far as I'm concerned), but it looks like you'll need one anyway for the healing. I definitely won't have non-humans in my party, so choices are somewhat limited.

The rest are meh. I'll give Cole and Sera a shot when the Inquisitor isn't a rogue.

For my first, "canon" game, as a human male mage protagonist: Cassandra, Cole and Varric.

I'm going to try my best and actively avoid a "main" party. I want to bring along all companions evenly and try out different party layouts. That said I'll have designated roles that will need to be filled (Rogue DPS, Healer, Tank, and my inquisitor will be mage damage). These roles can be swapped out easily among my companions and I intend to do that frequently. Keep it fresh.

For my first playthrough...

Elven Mage (romancing Cullen)

Iron Bull (Tank)

Varric (Ranger...and because I want my lovable dwarf to tag along. :P)

Cassandra

It's gonna switch some, so I might be adding in a mage, depending on my Elven Mage's abilities. But going with those three...think of the banter! XD

I like to have my party set up to have at least one of each class. That said, Varric is definitely going to be a companion throughout the game and all my playthroughs, only left him out of the party if absolutely necessary in 2, and I'm not gonna let him stay behind and miss out on all the fun. For the warrior, I'm thinking probably Iron Bull, especially for my first character which I'm thinking is going to be a qunari rogue. (Qunari team yeah!) As for the mage, I haven't really decided, maybe Dorian? It all really depends on how I feel after talking to them in-game for who I decide to bring along.

My first playthrough is still pretty much undecided, but right now it looks like this:

-Male Elf inquisitor (warrior)

-Blackwall: I need to have a Grey Warden in my party. And from the little we've learned about him, he just seems full of awesome. And I love heroes :)

-Sera or Varric (depends on where I'm going and if I think one will have more dialogue than the other): I need to get my comic relief from somewhere, and these two fit the bill perfectly

-Vivienne/Dorian/Solas

I just can't make up mind for the mage. None of them have really stuck out to me as someone I MUST bring along (yet). Hell, I might just go Blackwall/Varric/Sera

My main party looks like it'll probably consist of The Inquisitor, Cassandra, Varric, & Solas, as of right now.

Blackwall would be my first choice as he appeals to me very much as a veteran warrior. He seems to be someone who could act as a mentor for the Inquisitor, same for Solas who's going to be one of more intelligent characters who sees the world beyond being materialistic.

my main will def be cole, solas, Iron Bull, and a Mage inquisitor. None of the other companions really interest me except maybe sera and vivienne but that depends more on their personalities and less with the overall BAery that I get from the cole, solas, and iron bull

Inquisitor

Cassandra

The 3:d will depend who feels most like a main character to me and if more than one then I will change between them.

The 4th will depend on the mission, who it feels will be more effected by it. Or one I like more than the others.

I will always try to get 1 mage, 1 rouge and 1 warrior. The last one will who I want at the moment.

Dwarf female warrior (romancing Varric if available)

~ Dorian

~Varric

~Cassandra

With Cassy being changed out every so often for Sera or Solas. My Quizzy's besties: Dorian and Varric, are pretty much guaranteed to go everywhere with me. Don't get me wrong though, I love them all...just not equally.

For my first and only playthrough (though may play same character a few times) my main party shall be

My Inquisitor - A male Qunari rogue who would rather resolve each situation diplomatically than fight, also dislikes the sound on Qunari lifestyle.

Iron Bull - Romance option and warrior of the party, also interested in learning more about the Qun through him.

Cole - Fascinated by demons especially friendly ones, plus he's the exact same class my Inquisitor is and will kind of be like a 'best friend'.

Vivienne - If there's to be any mage in the party it should be the one who stands for the values I believe in, and that's the influence of the Empress and disapproval of the mages rebellion (pro-circle mage is best mage).

Obviously I will switch this party sometimes depending on the situation, sometimes they may not be wholly relevant to the quest but in terms of exploration this will be my team.

I'm planning to play a mage, probably a Knight Enchanter, for the party I'll see what happens. For the most part I haven't been checking out the promotion material, just gonna jump in.

From the companions list, I figure I gotta have a warrior around, Iron Bull looks awesome. For a bit of everything maybe a rogue like Sera, but I'll probably mix it up a lot. I used lots of characters along the way in the last two.

My second in this topic because I've changed my mind, but I can't decide which one should be the main party in my first playthrough.

Male Qunari Inquisitor (Mage/Knight Enchanter),Blackwall, Solas, Varric.

Male Qunari Inquisitor (Mage/Knight Enchanter), Cassandra, Solas or Dorian, Varric.

I usually end up with a main party on a second playthrough, after I've gotten to know all the companions, but based on what I know of them so far, this is what I think my second playthrough main party will look like.

Iron Bull
Dorian
Varric

I'm pretty much going to follow this line of thinking as well. There are too many characters I am interested in to put them off until a second playthrough. I'm definitely going to be using various combinations of everyone to see how they interact with each other, then by the end I assume a "main" party will form naturally based on what suits the type of Inquisitor I wind up becoming.
