I'd like to do an all-mage party, but probably not on my first playthrough. An all-female party at some point too. Combat effectiveness doesn't mean too much to me, since I tend to pick for personality, but with the new style I might need to take that into consideration (at least at first).
If I have to pick based on combat: Mage Qunari Feminquisitor, Dorian/DHMG, Sera, Iron Bull
If I pick purely on character preference: Mage Qunari Feminquisitor, Dorian/DHMG, Vivienne, Sera or Solas

For DAI it'll all come down to personality and who I like being around.

I can't really say on who I'll use, to be honest. Not until we have more information on how each party member works in concert with his/her fellows, what their particular skillset is, and what specialisation (assuming they have such things...the party members in the previous games did, so I'm hopeful) they'll possess.
But since I'm boring like that, most of my parties consist of 2 damagers, a tank, and a supporter. ![]()

As far as balanced party classes go, I tend to always follow the formula of having one healer, one tank and two side "melee" characters. Whether the melee characters are a destruction mage, a rogue or a two-handed warrior (i feel they are more combat driven then sword and shield) is entirely based on which characters I like the most.
In Dragon Age 2 especially I tried not to go out with companions with very strong opinions AGAINST one another because... I enjoyed the more comedic banter more! So as a rogue I was running around with Varric, Isabela and Anders the most! Three rogues and a mage walk into a bar...
So honestly for me it will vary on who is the most fun to have and the most useful. For my first go around I am pretty eager to play a mage and I am thinking I will take Varric, Cassandra and Dorian(based on what little I know about him) the most. They seem like they would make a fun bunch.

I tend to balance the party depending on gameplay and banter. So usually an mage, and rogue, an warrior and a fourth character of any class.
So I suppose mine would be:
Inquisitor - Mage/healer
Bearded warden - two handed
Varric - lock picking, DPS
Cassandra: Tank

As its looking almost certainly likely that I can't take Cullen *pouts*. I'll probably take Varric, Cole and hmmm possibly Iron Bull. I am usually the mage so unless I swap out Varric I won't be using any of those.

Yeah same here, with the healer set up..although i didnt do healer set up in the nightmare mode..which was bad choice. haha. but yeah I try to follow balance.. But I I am same with you.. I love the comedic banter..I would end up most of the time having Varric,Isabela, (Bethany or Merril). Pretty much a mix of these 4..always found them so fun to play with..But I would try to mix it up during new game plays.
hmm...My party for DA:I would be the same.. A mix of balance maybe but also...A mix of who ever banters I end up enjoying. =D Sometimes..it's about how I am feeling.. =P

I think I'm the only person in the world who's apathetic at best toward Varric and I doubt that'll change in Inquisition.
Anyway, knowing myself, my staple party would probably be: Iron Bull, Bara Warden, and whichever of the female characters I end up liking the best.

At the moment my most present companions looks to be DHMG, Solas and Sera with my Mage!Inquisitor and DHMG likely always being in my party. The best apart about having more open areas that you will be returning to and exploring in-depth is that I'll be able to roll an all-mage party a couple of times without worrying about having a rogue for chests, if I can just come back to it later. I see IB being my go-to warrior when I feel I might be in need to have a tactically well-rounded party.

I'm planning on making my first character a Qunari mage knight-enchanter, which puts me in a pickle: I don't know if the knight-enchanter can tank like an Arcane Warrior did or if he's just going to swing around a big ol' sword. After that, generally my selection criteria will go like so:
"Are they funny, jocular, sarcastic or otherwise witty?"
"Are they in some way magical?"
"Are they supportive of the status-quo? If so, kick them out."
Based on the first criteria Varric is practically a lock, while I'd rule out Cassandra and Vivienne based on the third criteria. "Mustache Guy" AKA Dorian Pavus looks like he'd have a sense of humor, so he'd probably be with us. Then the third slot is a toss up between Sera, Iron Bull and Bearded Gray Warden dude.

Nah, I can take him or leave him. I hardly used him in 2 once I got Seb. But I am usually an fem elf so Sera is competition lol and I don't see another archer in the group.

I'm going to play as a Male badass mage so my party is going to be;
1: Inquisitor
2: Cassandra
3: Varric
4: I don't know yet but MAYBE Sera
I never choose my party for the gameplay, always for the story.

My main party will be me and my LI (if he is a companion) then I will choose the rest so that in my party will be at least one mage, one warrior and one rogue. I can't say who I will choose before I have played the game. If one of them is annoying then I will switch to some other character in a same class. I will try to take different characters in different playthroughs with me so that the experience is a little bit different in each playthrough. However I might not always succeed in that if I don't like some characters for some reason.

Vivienne, Varric, Cassandra and Sera will most likely see some action in my first game. In previous Bioware games, I always tended to use my love interest and rotated the other companions/squadmates a bit.
