This is probably not a new thread but - my warden has never died and just this once I want to try that ending. Alistair has been made king on his own. No marriage plans. No romance. He's a little pissed off with me.
The first time I made it to the end my mage and Al were in love and he took the final blow. Not giving mage girl a chance. That is not somewhere I want to go again. How do I circumvent Alistair taking the final blow?
There's a Mod you can get, or you can leave him at the gate.
As long as you aren't in a romance with him, he won't automatically take the final blow. You'll have a discussion with him about it before you decide who takes the final blow. Also, you can do the dark ritual with Morrigan, that way you both can live.

Without PC mods just dump him right near the end. I think it has to be before you go to redcliffe. I'm not sure when but if he's not in love I think he will let you take the final blow otherwise you don't take him on the run with you when riordan asks. Or you let loghain live after making him king. Or don't romance him at all. Really, the only way he will take the blow without the ritual is if he is in love with you. Otherwise he will say he will do it but you can talk him out of it or let him do it. I had a mage elf that romanced zevran and let him do it since he really wanted to do it. Then I went back in that same game to a save before the kill on the roof and did the US.... wasn't going to play a whole game over just for a different ending. I kind of just wanted to do it for the sake of it but my PCs always live, so it was more to do it than because it was my whole game plan. In that case, we were not in love so if you romance zev (he has some good mods that makes it fun!) or don't romance anyone or just dump him sometime around the landsmeet he will not be in love. Love it the thing that makes him take the blow. Otherwise, you get to choose him or you.
Since you haven't romanced him, you should be fine. He'll offer to take the blow, you insist that you will, and you should be able to take it. He only steals the kill of an f!Warden he loves, I believe.
If you want to be extra double-plus sure, leave him at the Gates of Denerim. But I do think you're OK as-is.
