It's kind of sad really.
I thought Viscount Dumar was lame.. but Hawke probably takes the cake. Rise to power indeed.

Obviously, every Dragon Age game has a new protagonist, so the previous protagonist has to be taken off the market somehow to semi-justify this new untried idiot coming in and taking over everything. The mysterious disappearance worked with pro-mage Hawke (since they're on the lam), romancing-Morrigan-to-the-end Wardens (eluvians), and maaaaybe Tabris Wardens (possibly going to Tevinter undercover to get those stolen from the alienage back, but this is all conjecture unlike the other two). There's no reason for a dwarf Warden or a Mahariel to not go back to their people, and a mage Warden is likely to want to rebuild their home. So the disappearing act for the majority of possible previous protagonists is shaky at best.
I'm hoping they don't repeat the act for Inquisition, although I am perfectly aware it's already set in stone and is very likely. What I want to know/discuss is, what are the options for incapacitating the Inquisitor so they aren't dead, but do have to give up the adventuring life. We already know there won;t be kids in the game, so that option is sadly out.
Probably the Inquisitor is going to lose their fade-magic once the veil-tears are closed, so that's one aspect. With the restricted specializations, I'd like to see something related to your class in the game-- maybe if you have the archer weapon tree, you lose an eye or something and can't aim as well anymore. stuff like that.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out
I would love to see my Warden again, should it turn out to be the case in DAI. And for my part, I'd love closure as well on the Tevinter slaver plot from the alienage you mentioned...I played a Tabris myself, and I hope it will be acknowledged or some resolution established somehow by way of (potentially?) rescuing their kin or learning their status.
I don't mind the "mysteriously disappearing" epilogue in itself, particularly if it is utilized with plans in mind for future payoffs, but I would not want every protagonist within a franchise to have an option of "mysteriously disappearing" as an ending. That would feel too silly to me. If there is no further plans to utilize a protagonist of a game, then simply write out an epilogue ending. "Warden became Queen, lived a life with Alistair, ruled well, died at 60 by an unfortunate accident when a carriage carrying imported cheese fell upon her." Or whatever. I don't mind "sad" endings either, as long as it's written up well and makes sense.
Wall of text incoming. you have been warned
MHN male human noble
MCE Male City Elf
MDN male Dwarf Noble.
Warden A MHN, Went with Mori though the mirror and is stay at home dad, with maybe at a minimum hunting, and maybe dealing with the rare darkspawn raid.
Warden B MCE going back to Amerihten to be a duke and helping rebuild the warden ranks and then maybe having to deal with a large build of up darkspawn underground.
Warden C MHN prince consort dealing with Darkspawn ruling a nation, maybe end up assassinated while dealing with darkspawn in the deeproads.
Warden D MDN ruling Amerithien going back to Ozamair visting kid and keeping an eye on brother. Maybe get assinated by brother and dumped in one of the deeproads lavapits.
As for my Hawkes, funny enough excpt for 1, Went off with Romanced Isabella and is probably pirating with her, trying to stay as far away fromt he mage-templar conflict as he can.
And with the 1 Hawke that stayed in Kirkwall, I think he ended up running when he heard the Mage-Templar war break out and started getting pressured to "Pick a side" where he decided "screw this crap" I don't want to be a martyr. And running with Isabella's crew.
I always got the impression that, until DA2, we were intended to keep playing the Warden over the course of several games, much like we kept playing Shepard over the course of three games. The ending of DA:O foreshadowed further games involving the Warden, presuming your Warden survived. Then DA2 happened. I remember the disappointment on the forums that we had to be Hawke the Human, and we no longer had the choice between different races and origins. Lots of people missed having an origin even if they didn't miss having a choice of races.
I think that BioWare made the right decision to avoid dragging the same protagonist along down the line in the Dragon Age series. Having a new protagonist for each game allows the devs to abandon the baggage of the old one.
I am concerned about this whole disappearing thing, though. I really hope that whatever they have planned for it, if anything, is at least somewhat satisfying. If not, then it'll just be a waste of time. Both my Warden and Hawke pretty much have endings in which they leave the Grey Wardens and run off with Isabela after supporting the mages respectively. Disappearing makes perfect sense for them, but I wonder.
