They both deny their kingship at first, although they are convinced to take the throne,

they both give kingly speech right before leading a charge,

they both have something to make them special (Alistair being Grey Warden and Aragorn being able to live long),

they both need to fight someone who denies of their kingship,

and they both marry elven woman( If you are elvish woman and romanced him).

Looks like Tolken really did inspired all other fantasy games, stories, and movies.

Aragorn never denied his right and duty to be king.

No offence but before you speak about Tolkien, read Tolkien.

Eh...

Aragorn doesn't really fight anyone, he fights orcs. The Steward of Gondor doesn't put much of a fight.

Alistair fights a traitor of the realm.

and they both marry elven woman( If you are elvish woman and romanced him).

That's pulling at straws.

Ok let's see further.

  • A blonde elf rogue and a redhaired bearded dwarf warrior help a king to reclaim his throne. Let's call him A.
  • A wise ruler of another kingdom / arling was poisoned before, then helped by A and his company. Now he helps A in the last battle, sending him his troops. (I'll skip the claim Teagan resembles Eomer, they have some things im common but also enough differences)
  • In the main city, a man who dislikes A influences the throne or even sits on it.
  • But the main fight is not about A's throne, but about the dark forces who wish to destroy the world - led by somebody who cannot be fully destroyed unless under special conditions.
  • Wasn't Orzammar inspired by Moria?
  • Last but not least, A gains allies due to a treaty. Without these, the big battle would be lost.

>> I do not say LotR and DAO have the same story or similar characters. The setting, the main story arc has some similarities. Some may be a coincidence, since it can happen in every fantasy world (like the Grand Oak / Treebeard helping the heroes in an enchanted forest, Saruman's Uruk-hai and the Architects awakened darkspawn, even Flemeth and Tom Bombadil can be compared to a certain degree...) I am aware the characters are different, have different motivations and feelings - but sometimes it is just fun to compare.

1) Aragorn denying his kingship was a movie-only thing, though I personally think Movie-Aragorn was more interesting because of this.

2) True

3) They both stand out; Alistair being an elf-blooded templar-trained warden and Aragorn being an elven-raised Dunedain Ranger

4) Aragorn never had to fight anyone who denied his kingship. They only person would've denied Aragorn's claim was Denethor and he was dead before Aragorn ever joined the Battle on the Pelennor.

5) Possible

6) They both have a sarcastic and show-off elf (Legolas and Zevran); a boisterous warrior dwarf (Gimli and Oghren); and a wise old mage (Wynne and Gandalf)

They're not alike.

Aragorn has the whole "Badass Ranger sitting in the corner of a bar" thing.

Alistair has the whole "I like to be a little weak", "I like to follow", and "Wynne, can you mend my clothes..pwetty pwease?" thing.

If there are any parallels, I would look more closely at Song of Fire and Ice - the series. Or GoT. There are some much stronger similarities there than LotR. The manipulations and treachery over the throne. I'd compare Bryce to Ned Stark. Fergus could have been Rob...

We've got competing for the throne though not through various houses, however we have houses represented throughout Ferelden that show up at the landsmeet. They're just not all in a battle for rulership.

Alistair = Jon

Both bastards with noble fathers who were good men, the wall is a lot like the wardens. The wall keeps out wildlings while wardens watch over darkspawn threat. Both are are a major danger to their respective realms. Also, the wall seems to monitor white walkers to a degree though the wildlings appear to be their main concern while the white walkers are much closer to darkspawn it seems.

Jon was a virgin when we met him. So was alistair. Jon was sent to the wall because Catelyn Stark HATED him for what he represented. Alistair was sent to the chantry because Isolde hated him for what he represented. Difference is Jon thought it was going to be so much better than it was. But that would parallel with what Alistair thought of the Wardens and learned otherwise but is in denial of that truth - he only admits it in the fade.

Darkspawn return every few hundred years... like white walkers though time frames might differ. I'm not sure how long between white walker returns.

GOT/ Song of Fire and Ice was probably an inspiration to some degree for elements from both skyrim and DAO. DAO darkspawn to me are the parallel of what white walkers are. Skyrim makes the Draugrs - deathlords look a lot like them with the glowing eyes.

And of course... there are dragons...

Indeed.  In the books he was determined to reclaim his throne and unite his people against the forces of Mordor as well as to prove himself worthy of Arwen.

It's been strongly hinted that Alistair's true mother was Fiona, an elven Grey Warden who went on to become the Grand Enchanter of the Circle of Magi.

Alistair fights a man he believes to be a traitor of the realm.

Fixed that for you.

And OP, just no. Alistair, much as I like him, isn't even comparable to Aragorn.

For one, Aragorn only denies the kingship in the movies. While this makes him more interesting, that's the only place it happens. But despite all this, he shows how he's a proven leader of men, on various occasions.

I give hope to men, I keep none for myself.

Contrast to Alistair who couldn't find his pants if they were on top of his head.

And while Alistair does give a speech before the final battle -- and is certainly the one with the better delivery, though still kinda hammy IIRC -- it's not all that different from Anora's. But yes, both Alistair and Aragorn give speeches.

Honestly, the "connections" are very... stretched, at best. As was pointed out, Alistair's more akin to Jon Snow then Aragorn.

I honestly think Gaider read Song of Fire and Ice at some point. The similarities are just.... too hard to ignore. But I don't see any between Aragorn and him. Reaching at best. But striking like they hit you over the head for SoFaI/GoT, and similarities that go beyond Alistair... but Alistair could be Jon's twin in a parallel universe called Westeros...

Aragorn was biding his time to claim his kingship waiting for the sign which was the finding of the ring.

Alistair does not want to be king. If you toughen him up however he's not so reluctant.

Also Mel Gibson gives a speech in Braveheart. King Théoden also gives a speech in movie LOTR. Hot guy in the second Mummy movie gives a speech. You gotta inspire the troops I guess.

Hey, could we not conflate the female body with weakness and worthlessness?

That'd be great, thanks.

I'm positive it's explicitly stated somewhere that soiaf inspired DA. That's how I first became aware of the series.

And you're right, there are some fairly notable parallels - the Grey Wardens/Crows having to unite a fractured land as the major factions squabble over politics and  a vacant throne, to defeat a threat to them all (the Darkspawn/White Walkers). There's blood magic too, and dragons, of course. I'm convinced Aveline is blatantly Brienne.

Alistair makes more sense as Jon than as Aragorn. Aragorn is just a classic dashing, prodigal hero returned to claim his rightful throne, while Alistair and Jon both have the 'bastard-outcast but with mysterious parentage' thing going on. But really Alistair's a fairly distinct character.

Alistair is unique from Jon in many ways. The similarities stops at the basics of their work, their upbringing (to a certain point in time) treatment by a mother figure in the household, being shipped off, and being the bastard outcast. I don't see anything in their personalities that really are similar. Oh they were both virgins as well. But yes, their personalities are quite distinct.

Sure, LOTR inspired a lot of fantasy, but a lot of works take inspiration from others. Aragon/Alistair are both fitting of the hero archetype so there are similarities. I agree that Alistair and Thedas are closer to Jon Snow and Westeros.

Of course, I could also say The Sword of Truth series also influenced DA, specifically Seekers of Truth. You could say Alistair is similar to Richard in that both of them don't know real parentages until later (did Alistair know or was it hidden from him? It's been a few months since I've played DAO). Mages/Wizards are kept in keeps for schooling and not exactly trusted.

Then I can say Monty Python influenced the series because of the killer rabbit allusion.
