Does anyone think we might actually see The Black City up close? If not in Inquisition, at all

Could whomever's seated there be the mastermind behind the breach?

What we "know" of it:

It's the likely source of the Darkspawn

Spirits of the Fade don't go near it either. Not even the more powerful demons. At least according to the codex.

According to Corypheus it was Black from the beginning.

I don't keep up to date on Lore as I'd like, so let me know if I missed anything out.

I don't think we'll be able to enter the capital of the fade in inquisition, but I'd love to see a closer look at it.

In DAO we only see these floating islands from a distance.

You can see the black city very up close in Dragon Age: Awakening, so close that if there was a long bridge you would actually reach it, still looks fadeish and blackish though.

The main conflict in DAI, by all appearances, deals with demons. The Black City's primary connection is to the Darkspawn.

Unless the secret twist is weaponising the darkspawn taint against the demons, I don't see us having a reason to go there.

I was thinking more along the lines of inside it

I suspect that we'd end up becoing rather Corypheus-y if we did.

And it was strange how the Black City appeared closer in the Fade version of the Blackmarsh, since its often described as always being the same distance from the dreamer, no matter how much they try to get closer to it?

Until I'm proven wrong(or if Anders or whoever comments on it when I play through Awakening in a few days), I'm going to assume that that was a technical oversight. It just doesn't mesh with established lore and hasn't been acknowledged since.

Thats is what some people says but unless it was confirmed by a developer we just dont know for sure. We dont even know whats the black city really. Maybe there was a reason why it was actually closer than nobody in thedas history could ever find out.

Anyway, I definitely don't see it happening in Inquisition. DAI isn't the game to do that in.

The "We're dealing with the darkspawn and the old gods once and for all" game is the game to do that in.

I wrote speculative fan-lore quite some time before Legacy was released and made a guess that the City had always been Black among other guesses, but I was excited to hear Corypheus speak it.

In response to your question, I sure would like to- as it's a fascinating subject. I read somewhere on here where someone theorized that it may be Arlathan- which is an interesting concept!

But if we are left to continue to speculate I would not mind that either.

Maybe whoever truly dwells in the Black City is the true culprit behind the Demon Invasion?

My guess is that the Black City is currenly home to Fen'Harel and he's behind practically everything.

Y'know something funny about Soldier's Peak?  There's an eluvian in there.  What were the Wardens doing with an eluvian?

I always wonder that myself. Maybe the eluvians are also linked to the black city? The black city is in the fade, there are demons in the fade, the black city gave the taint, tamlen gets the taint from the mirror and he even said he saw a city. (which some people say its arlathan)

It's possible that Avernus was trying to activate it, hoping to use it in his research. I get the feeling he was interested in the Black City long before the attack. Maybe he thought it would bring him closer to the Black City or maybe the wardens just thought it tied the room together.

Interesting, I never noticed that until you pointed that out.

Somewhat off topic, but I did notice however that the portrait in the first room of the bearded man looks very much like our Warden companion in DA:I.

Well, the Fade is involved in some fashion, so some hints about it may come up in the process. Perhaps looking to combat darkspawn corruption is part of getting the Wardens on board with the Inquisition?

We may not get all the answers about the Fade and the Black City answered, but something's bound to come up, I'm almost positive. It's too much of a cornerstone of DA lore to be ignored entirely, even if it's not the main focus.

I think the moment we enter the Black City, it will cease to be interesting.

As hard as it is for me to say, I hope no Dragon Age game ever takes us directly to it. The City should stay forever out of reach, taunting our imaginations.

The Black City kinda freaks me out a little. You'll have to send somebody else, the Inquisitor isn't home right now.

This.

I say this with all due respect to the good people at Bioware, but there is literally nothing they can do that would live up to the expectations some fans have of the City. It's something that's better left as a mystery.

Exactly just like the moment we find out the maker (if real) is not like some were expecting. The thing is that eventually the curiosity has to be sated, sometimes its good to let people wonder and use their own imagination and interpretation of things to make the game more interesting but there must be a time where one loses interest if it isnt confirmed. Its like wondering about a space station life you always dreamed off but when you get there it wasn't as amazing as you thought. Its like you imagining about something when the reality its nothing like you think it might be and only experiencing it will confirm how you actually feel about it. Sometimes its better to experience it even if it wasnt as you thought it would be, making you disappointed, etc. At least you now know the experience (negative or positive) and its up to you whether you want to accept it or not. Things cannot always be one's ways and its up to people to understand that.

I personally would like to go to the black city and meet the maker when the time is right. It would make the game series more interesting once they are running out of things to keep us interested and curious. I only like to be curious about something for a time but in the end I would like some kind of confirmation. One example is how in mass effect 3 they didnt show tali face (beside the pic) only because they were afraid that fans would be disappointed because of how they already imagined tali face in their mind, in which instead disappointed other fans who wanted to see her face even if it wasnt as they thought it would be (like me, though I still liked it) sometimes its either one side or the other, I rather them take the "risky" approach than the "safe" approach.

It could be done. If dialogue choices were flagged when the PC is talking about the Maker, or the Elven Gods, or whether they are merely metaphor and allegory, then those flags could be used to determine what the player actually sees in the Black City. However, that would require a certain level of roleplaying from the player to achieve the desired results. (swapping companions and using different dialogue choices to get companion approval would most likely kill that being an effective method, but it is an option.)

Not a big surprise when you consider Merrill has one in her shack.
