I'd like (and this is just personal preference) the option to use bastard swords. A very good example of how they work is Dark Souls 2 (not saying they should imitate its combat, but for the sake of explaining). The classic longswords are there, the greatwords are what is also called bastards and the two handers are called ultra greatswords ingame (like the realistic zweihander or more buster sword like). The bastards are basically swords made to be wielded with one or two hands, a middle ground between both.

So I'd just like to be able to wield a bastard sword with a shield or dagger and have an ability to basically change my stance to two handing and back (like the defense stance in the shield tree). You wouldn't do as much damage as with a two handed sword and that skill tree and not have as much defense as with the proper sword and shield tree, but I think it's something that would be interesting to have, and the change between an offensive and defensive stance is much more obvious visually.

Could we see this in DA:I? My money's on the negative tbh. The project is too advanced to include things like this but hey, maybe on some expansion (Awakening had new skill trees and animations for them) or the next DA game. Anyhow just wanted to put this on the forum and hopefully some dev will see it.

Have a nice day and feel free to discuss :)

I like the idea OP, but they wont do it.  They decided to go with sword and shield, two handed weapon, dual daggers or bow/mage staff. Creativity level <0. Oh i forgot, you could throw jars with bees, this is a big deal....Much more epic than dual swords, bastard swords, one handed wands, spears...etc..Maybe some time prior to launch we will get an explanation why games from over a decade ago had more weapon types than  DAI.  That would be Diablo, TES....etc..

They have already given numerous explanations on the why, both Allan Schumacher and David Gaider have posts about it. It is about development budgets but also memory. Bioware has to worry about not just the PC but also companion animations. Game companies have different priorities regarding game design. You also have got to take into account that game development is far more expensive than it was a decade ago. And with gamers demanding the latest graphics some things aren't important enough to have in comparison with other features.

I believe that even gamers shouldn't ask for everything they can come up with. Even we should ask ourselves if our suggestion is really that important over other features. I am certain a lot of developers woukd love to create the ultimate game but they are always restrained by budgets and technical limitations.

TES hasn't had spears, throwing knives or non-casting staffs since morrowind. they didn't get the crossbow back into the games until skyrim and it was put in more as an afterthought. you also have to remember that the animations for weapons back then were a lot more clumsy and generic with thrust, smash and swing being the majority of them.  DA:O rogues and warriors shared the same weapon animations so there was no worries there about weapons but now the classes are much different in how they move in combat so it makes since to have to limit what they can use.

I personally wish we could have one handed only sword style. Arming swords and bastard swords are awesome.

You should be a game developer you understand these things perfectly. I love that Skyrim devs, AC4 devs and many more are not that limited in their ambitions. If we thought like that we would still live in caves waiting for someone to discover the fire.

EDIT: Jensaarai me too.

I get what you're saying dutch_gamer, but then again this is a suggestions and feedback subforum, so I think it's only fitting that we make any suggestions we can think of and let the devs decide whether they want them or not.

Now making demands or expecting for something to be implemented just because you posted it here is just flat out ridiculous. (it's said in the subforum title, suggestions, not demands). Hell, I think that all the people who asked for the ability to ride horses influenced on the fact that we will be able to do it in DA:I (even if it's just riding, no mounted combat from what I last heard).

In the end let's just make suggestions and don't expect anything to come out of it

Ah, it's so nice when I get to learn the english name for a sword type, thanks :)

btw, Brotarian, that you?

Edit: and this is what happens when I've been away from BSN for so long, I end up making a fool of myself. So nevermind, I answered that question myself. Nice to see you btw

Sounds like a bad case of Too Awesome To Be Possible.
