Hi folks,

okay, I realize that this is an embarrassing question but I will go ahead and ask it anyway. Please keep in mind that I am a beginner. Today I created my own area in the toolset for the first time. Then I had to save the project. I hit the disk-symbol in the toolbar and switched my computer off. One hour later I was ready to continue with my work. I started the toolset, went to File --> Manage Modules and opened my module. But the area is gone. Where is it? I called it "test_area". I can't find it anywhere. So, I tried to create a new area (File --> New Area). However, I can't name it "test_area" because a message pops up, saying that this recource name is already in use. Which tells me that my area isn't lost. So, where is it stored? Searched the whole computer for it and couldn't find it.

open the single player module and click on areas, then type the name in the search box. It will not show up on your computer because it's in the database unless you exported it. If it does not show up in single player module (manage modules) try opening your module again and search in areas (It is the first icon, green and yellow in the palette window) B2B_load_menu_command.png

Thank you. Unfortunately, it still doesn't show up but at least I know now that I probably made a mistake earlier. I'll just start over ;).

It is there someplace. Try the "all" icon in the palette. I lose stuff all the time. :P Do you know which folder you saved it in, or just default /

Thought the same like Luna. Single Player should be the first option for a search.

Enter 'test' as search string into the search field of the palette window and / or click the triangle near the search field to toggle on the filter options and tick 'Only show resources checked out to me'. If the area can´t be found in the Single Player module I would recommend to repeat the search in other modules.

Either you have saved the resource to another module (check the setting for the owner module in the resource properties once it will be found) or you haved saved the area within an another module than yours. The toolset starts usually with the last opened module. You have written 'I started the toolset, went to File --> Manage Modules and opened my module.' I guess you have switched modules.

Successful search!

Thank you for your help. I statrted over and tried to follow this tutorial over here. And I'm afraid I need some more help. Things won't show up as it is described in this tutorial.

- I created an area, i.e. I picked a layout from the resource selection.

- Since this area is my starting area, I set up a waypoint. I gave the waypoint a name and a tag.

- Next thing I want to do is to tell the module that the player spawns at this waypoint when the game starts.

The tutorial says:

Now that we have an area and a waypoint to start at, we can now tell the module that this is where the player is to appear. Reopen the "Manage Modules" window (available via a command under the File menu), select your module, and click the "Properties" button. This opens the module's properties. For the "Starting Area" property, click on the ellipsis button (Ellipsis.png) and select the starting area from the areas available in the module; since we've only put one area in so far "hut_exterior" will be the only available option.

But there is no area available. How can that be? I mean, I loaded the area from the resource selection. I can see the area in the main window. Why is it not there if I go to Manage Modules --> Properties --> Starting Area --> Ellipsis.png

If I click on that button, the resource open/save window pops up but it is completly empty.

EDIT: I just realized that there might be another problem regarding the placeable objects. I click on File --> New --> Placeables. A new window opens and I type a name for my object in, let's say "statue". A new tab opens in the toolset and under "Appearances" I choose my object. That works all fine. However, my statue won't show up afterwards. I should be able to find it if I go back to my area tab and hit the "Placeables" button, but ... nothing. Why isn't there anything?

Completly empty? That doesn´t sound well.

No clue.

It does sound like the area's are being created in the wrong module or you are looking at the properties of the wrong module (that would cause things to appear to disappear).

Can you post a screen-shot of your module's properties?

With your module open in the toolset select the File > Manage Modules menu option; highlight your module (if it isn't already); click the Properties ... button and maximise the height of the Object Inspector window. If you then hold the Alt key and press the Print Scrn key it will just take a screen-shot of the active window i.e. just the Object Inspector rather than the whole toolset. Paste that into your preferred art program, save it, upload it to your preferred image host and then post it here!

Similarly it might be worth taking a screen-shot of the Create New Resource window.

With your module open in the toolset select the File > New > Area menu option; without entering or changing anything take a screen-shot (Alt + Print Scrn again) and post that.

My immediate thoughts - did you create a new module before creating your new area?  Is so, did the hierarchy show 'Single Player'?  If you don't have the hierarchy set up right, you won't see placeables (and other resources) that should be there.

So the screenshots that Sunjammer mentioned and a screenshot of the hierarchy for your module

In addition to the above, could it be that you aren't making full use of the Pallette window? It seems you're attempting to access resources solely from the file tab.

Also, if you create a new Placeable, you will need to access it from the Pallette and drop it into the area before you can see it in the placeables list within the area editor.

As MerAnne mentioned, the Module and Hierarchy setup is important and the screenshots requested by Sunjammer would help us get to the bottom of your issue.

@ DahliaLynn, my toolset doesn't have any folders under the pallette window. Mine looks like this:

palette_window.jpg

@ MerAnne: No, if I go to File --> Manage Modules --> Hierachy the "Single Player" option is not switched on. However, I have read somewhere that you have to turn it off if you want to do a stand-alone module.

Here are the other requested screenshots. I hope it helps.

And this is my "Starting Area" window:

:)Found out the difference between "stand alone" and single player extended modules.

If you wish to create a stand alone module, then do not extend to Single Player in your module properties, however if you wish to access the Single Player resources (such as existing game areas), you need to go back to your module set up and click "Hierarchy" then tick the box that says Single Player.

ex. Make sure your module is open, go to File>manage modules, and instead of clicking "Properties", click "Hierarchy". Then tick "Single Player" for the Single Player game resources to appear in your Pallette. This setting has no effect on whether or not your module is stand alone.

Additionally, for now and in order to see the effects of your changes, uncheck "Only show resources checked out to me" in the pallette window.

Once you see the resources appear in the Pallette, that would be the place to open resources and not from the File>open selection, as that option is for other purposes (such as opening an exported file, a compressed toolset archive files (*.erf) *.mrh files (headmorph resource) and others.)

First of all, thank you for the explanations. I can't believe that this was not explained properly in any of the tutorials I have read (well, at least I haven't seen it). Yes, I would like to access the Single Player resources. So I followed your steps: I opened my module and ticked the box "Single Player" in the "Hierachy" option. Furthermore, I changed the "Content Module" and the "Extended Module" to "Single Player". Last but not least I unchecked "only show resources checked out to me", but there are still no folders in the pallette window.

Maybe I don't have the Single Player resources loaded? Because if I add a new area (right click on the "area"-button in the pallette window --> new --> area), the "Create New Resource" window opens.

But if I click on "Folder" it looks like this:

You do have a problem: you've got an empty database! No core resources (otherwise the "Open/Save Resource" window would have a "_Globals" folder) or Single Player resources. That said this shouldn't stop you saving your own resources.

Probably the easiest way to fix this is to restore the original database files (which BioWare supplied with the toolset). It would mean you would lose everything you have done just now however given you've just started and all the problems you've had that probably isn't much/anything.

Ah, thank you. "Database" was the right keyword. I found the mistake now which must have already occured when I installed the toolset. Since I got this "unable to connect to database" error, I installed the database manually. What I didn't know was that the toolset only communicates in english with the database. The database, however, uses the language of the computersystem. In my case my database is by default in German. I used SQL Server Management Studio Express now and changed the language to English. Now I can see all the shiny folders B) . I will try to create a new area now - finally.

Thanks again, everybody  . I'm sure this will be helpful for others as well.

Not just the database. If you want to compile scripts you'll have to set the OS language to English or the toolset will freeze.

Furthermore, I changed the "Content Module" and the "Extended Module" to "Single Player"

Awesome news! Glad you have your Database back :) I noted you were missing core in your Pallette which was already odd, but couldn't know since you had "show resources only checked out by me" enabled.

While your settings for "Content Module" is outside of my realm of knowledge, in my experience there was never a need to set that to Single Player but you may want to look into it more.

Also, setting "Extended Module" to Single Player in your module properties will add your module to the Dragon Age Single Player campaign, so if you wanted it to be a stand alone, you may want to remove Single Player from that setting.

I will try out a few things now. I already created my first standalone module today. It only has two rooms in it, but never mind. So, tomorrow I will try the opposite and add a module to the Single Player campaign. But thanks a lot :).
