In the past Dragon Age games you fight some NPC mage enemies that teleport, so shouldnt you also be able to do this if you're a mage? If you're a rogue you had a move that teleported behind enemies to stab them just like rogue NPC enemies did.

If there are any other abilities NPCs had in the previous games that you think you should be able to use feel free to mention in the comments.

I would kinda prefer that feature to be removed entirely as I don't understand how it jives with the lore, but if it's going to stay in the gameplay, I'd like it to be available to me as well yes.

Bioware's been super insistent that mages in DA2 didn't teleport but rather moved super fast. I agree that random NPC mooks shouldn't have abilities that are unique to them (for the most part), but technically teleportation isn't part of the lore.

Pretty much this.

David Gaider commented that they don't teleport and that there was supposed to be an added animation effect to show the 'blur' of them moving fast, but they didn't have time to get it into the game.

They actually showed something along these lines at the PAX Prime demo. If you jump to 31:24 here, the enemy mage does a flashy little teleport (however BioWare justifies it...cool, but look at the video--he teleports). And at 32:00, you'll see our very own Vivienne showing off something similar  :)

I seems justifyable with shapeshifting. Lke the mage shifted into a raven and flew to the back or something.

Yeah, if they aren't going to properly represent such things visually as fast movement, or illusions then I'm in the camp that would prefer their removal.

Would be a cool Rift Mage ability, teleporting around the battlefield

That sounds pretty cool, actually.

Thanks! I will definitely check that out.

I looked at it and what Vivienne didnt seem quite the same as what the enemy mage did, but I hope it is,

that mage totally turned into something there.

In a game where positioning makes all the difference, I'd rather all teleport abilities be removed in their entirety. If you over extend your party and get flanked that's on you, but having an enemy effortlessly get into an advantageous position that you had previously taken pains to secure just smacks of cheez. Then again I guess it doesn't matter quite as much in DA2 where enemies literally crawled out of the woodwork anyway.

Though if the meta principle behind the ban on teleportation was to avoid the cheap escape route of teleporting out of danger, doesn't "moving really fast" still offer that same cheap escape route?

I think a lot of it is to do with game lore, how do you imprison people when walls aren't an obstacle for them?

I feel like if that was the reason, they wouldnt give enemy mages that ability. Plus, dont Circle Towers have some sort of magical defense or something?

Oh my gosh, totally! I still have lots of uncertainty as to what the heck a rift mage is and why it's so different from any old mage who draws upon the Fade, but if that would fit into existing lore that'd be badass.

I looked at it and what Vivienne didnt seem quite the same as what the enemy mage did, but I hope it is,

Yep, they're definitely different animations and visual effects. And Vivienne's range seemed to be much more limited. (Or perhaps she just hadn't invested as much into that particular skill!)

that mage totally turned into something there.

Looking again, I think you're right. And I think that's a very spiffy visual effect! Like the Death Eaters from the HP movies when they Apparated, only more natural-looking. (Does it make sense to talk about how "natural" it looks for someone to ripple into a different shape and fly to another location in a split second...? )

I definitely want teleportation. It's a magical ability a Mage should have. Fast movement should be an ability too out of many magical things.

I wouldn't say that it shouldn't exist, rather that I'd like some explanation for it than just be "Hey, we can teleport now cause the combat designers allowed us to! Cool!".

I'm kinda torn on this actually, combat has already crossed the line of believability, so on one side I feel like "who cares? the rest of the stuff is just as inconsistent and doesn't fit in the lore"(Warrior abilities and such), but on the other hand the thought of having another ability cutting corners and possibly not having any logic or reasoning expect the "we thought it's cool and useful so we're gonna put it in the game" excuse backing up it's existence gnaws at my mind(especially when it's a Mage ability since magic in the games never broke the lore at least as far as I know).

In the case that no explanation is given It could just be a faster "burst" version of Haste, ever thought about that?

It's impossible to teleport. Enemy mages don't teleport either in DA: 2. They just use a burst of speed and travel invisibly from one place to another. It's one of The Cardinal Rules of Magic. But indeed you can make a flashy move as a mage in DA: I like Vivienne in PAX demo.

Is what Vivenne did in the PAX demo actually the same as what enemy mages did in DA2? I feel like what the mage did right before is more similar, but perhaps they turned into something. Either way, I want to do it.

It looks like he turns into a gust of pages of a spellbook. The same mage who is always lugging a spellbook around. Interesting.

Somehow I don't think the player will have access to this ability.

That's a good point. Perhaps its one of the ways the rip in the veil affects mages.

yup thanks to rift to the rifts mages can do stuff they could earlier teleportation probably by through the fade in out to the destination. this is why i think rift mage specialization will have something to do with teleportation.
