Very nice score. I tend to agree with IGN's reviews. Except their rediculous 10/10 for gtaIV. I never played MGS4 so I can't comment on that. ME2 is looking to be one of my favorite games of all time. Tuesday can't come fast enough.
I didn't agree with 10/10 on Grand Theft Auto4 either. That was more of a timing issue. April Gaming drought, boom GTAIV pops, and it seems like the holy grail.
I'll sum up MGS4, and consider that, I don't own a PS3 but have played a good chunk of MGS4, and very much Liked the Metal Gears up until MGS2 when the story took a turn to ****tytown (Vamp's Bisexual btw).
Stealth Gameplay cut completely. In favor of unlimited ammo tranq pistol that drops pretty much everyone in 1 hit.
Horrible Writing. (Not saying the actual story is bad, I'll say that later, but just the writing style of Kojima is terrible)
2/3 the Game is non-interactive cutscenes.
The Main villian is actually a hand, controlling Ocelot telepathically or some such. So about as compelling as a bag of vomit.
The combat controls are clunky and painful. Would be an asset if the game focused on stealth rather than bang bang shootey booms. (By asset, I mean simulate the pain of Solid Snake's age-induced arthritis)
My point is not saying that MGS4 is a bad game, but citing this example that IGN is as reliable as their bank account permits. I'm surprised they gave Dark Void a crappy review, but then again, it was from a new Developer sooo?
I just wish numerical scores would be tossed out the window. There is no mathmatical equation to derive fun.
I Love MGS from the first to 4, i did find that 10/10 incradibly lucky IMO, but without a doubt, MGS4 was, and may still be the finest crafted game on the PS3, i think the review hit such a high mark mostley because the PS3 was lacking up to that point, compared now to newer games it shows its flaws, but for the relase window it truley was that exiting, im sure in retrospect a 9.5-9.8 would have been more suited. I however barley had fun with GTAIV and didnt see why a 10 for polish was more important than the fact that it was kinda dull. TBOGT however was exactly what it needed.
You are right though, numerical scores mean nothing as long as the game is fun to the player.
Great news about ME2 though.

Rereading the last bit, I think I was confused into thinking they were really criticizing it for the import aspect. My Bad.Rybo Collier wrote...
I believe they deducted points because of the technical issues they encountered like the game crashing and their Shepard getting stuck on objects.

They deductee points in order to avoid another backlash.
It was worse in the case of GTA IV,since I quickly understood just how badly most critics were off on that one.The dull and uninspired missions and horrible checkpoint system alone were worthy of dropping the score by 0.5.
Plenty of gamer already know how overrated Kojima is(love his creativity and ideas, but he's one bad writer and some of the stuff he can come up with is beyond silly and cheesy like that duel in the end of MGS 3),so both Metal gear solid 2 & 4 are 2-3 points abover their worth. In the case of 4,the writing is atrocious and the gameplay sure isn't improved from the earlier title.
The review seems to suggest a perfect 10,but it's good to see IGN showing some restraint.Giving ME 2 a 10 would bring huge backlash from jrpg fans or shooter/sony fanboys(and I'm not sure it's really deserved until I actually play the game myself).

Clearly you didn't pay attention to the storyline of MGS4. It was not a hand controlling ocelot, did you just skip the ending all together?

1. None of you have played the game.
2. The reviewers have played the game, obviously
3. Different people have different tastes
4. Saying one game gets x score while another gets y is stupid.
5. Giving reasons why they gave thescore they did is again, stupid
Read the review and judge for yourself.
You're right, and some people are more critical than others.
Comments > Numbers. And by any stretch, Mass Effect 2 is going to be something that sets 2010 as one of the best years in gaming. Snuffing out the stink of Darksiders and Dark Void in one swift drop.
WHo cares what it does to Darksiders or Dark Void, each game is going to stand on its own merits.

And a 9.6 is so much better than getting a 10, because really, games like that GTA4/Fallout 3 have major problems like lightning, glitching, character gliding *cough fallout 3 cough*, amongst other things. It's better to just get real high up but not high up over hyped. Eric kept it real with the review, and broke down what needed to be said....
The game scored higher than the first, and higher than most games over the past year, and yet the review still conveyed a rawness to it that, "hey this game isn't perfect, which no game is, but it will rock your soul!"
Job well done BioWare. 4 days till we continue the journey!

Despite being a single site with the same review template used for each game, IGN isn't a monolithic entity with only one opinion.

Hope that was only an issue with the reviewers copy of the game , like maybe he was playing a beta version, because the first one suffered from the silly getting stuck in objects bug ...

People should not comment on the accfuracy of a review score before they've actually played the damn game. It's all subjective anyway, and then you weigh the score against your EXPECTATIONS.
I agree, seeing people argue over a fantastic score and a fantsitc review is jsut stupid and petty. They really liked it and for some reason you compare that to you experiance to the game...which is none?

ME2 = 9.6?
Not complaining about ME2's score! That's a great score! congrats! But, a 10 for GTA4? Really, this is why I find it hard to watch you ign. I only watched b/c I wanted to hear what they thought, but mostly more gameplay... lol Can't wait!
