I think you're genuinely a person who somehow received this power, the method in which you received these powers is the mystery. If you were actually a demon with amnesia, there would be no point in background stories and it would just be kind of a waste given how much culture there is behind each race. I think the question is, what gave you this ability

I was hoping we could be a hybrid.

A thought that's been occurring to me lately is this; most people seem to be(from what I can tell, I could be wrong) that the Inquisitor is someone who gains the power to close these veil tears by surviving the opening of the breach, possibly by being possessed by a spirit, or otherwise didn't actually survive at all and we're playing a spirit impersonating someone else, essentially making us Cole 2: The Competent One.
But I've been thinking, what if we're just a regular guy who didn't get the power by surviving the breach, but survived the breach because we had this power all along, it simply never manifested because we never had an application for it before. One thing the DA team is big on is including certain unexplainable phenomenon that don't mesh with how people in universe believe the world works; Flemeth being the most notable example. Some things in the world are just unique; maybe we're one of them.

In new game informer article
Spoiler
So I think you are human
Thanks so much. The hybrid is if we went in and died like Wynne and came back out with a powerful spirit.

I never thought of that. It really sounds cool to have been born with a special power.

We know she existed in the past and while the maker may not care about thedas anymore that doesn't mean she hasn't. Maybe it's her way of trying to save humanity without interfering too much?
Perhaps the breach caught the attention of the Maker and is testing the inquisitor to see if Thedas is worth saving or if he should start from scratch again?

The idea that you're Cole 2.0 would seem more plausible if 1.0 wasn't also on the team. It seems pretty redundant at that point. I think you probably are just the individual you were before the breach and you ended up with this special power through some means we'll learn after release.

If the glowing hand is a "blessing" which makes the inquisitor the target of the big bad then perhaps it can may be Andraste herself that gave you that ability?

I remember the hand. Was it glowing green?

You have a point there. We already had Human/Spirit combo.

I doubt they would do that. First of all, that would essentially confirm the Maker's existence. Second, it would essentially force us into siding with Andrastianism.
BioWare won't do this because it limits our freedom and choice. I can't exactly be a Dalish who reveres the Creators or an apatheistic qunari if I have the power of the Maker. The Elder Scrolls suffers from this problem and I'd rather not Dragon Age have it as well.

yeah, especially in morrowind... it was all about the prophecy of the dark elves and their ancient houses and how you are the reincarnated herp... and you could play as a different race... yeah, really weird

my guess is we were either given this power, or we are inhabited by a spirit like wynne.

Crazy speculation: there's actually a third option here. What if, instead of being inhabited by the spirit, we ARE the inhabiting spirit? And the non-playable origin is not us, but the host's memories?
Spirits seem to get very confused on leaving the Fade, and we know from Justice that they can share their host's memories (in his case, Kristoff wasn't even alive).
All I'm saying is that it would be pretty badass if the intro was wandering around the Fade, then the explosion launches you into the character creator to pick your host.
[note: in all seriousness, I doubt this would happen. Would make romances really weird, for one thing. Still fun to speculate about.]

Interesting but I mean no disrespect but I hope not! If it were true it would doom any romance expect for maybe cole (which i doubt would be a romance)

Someone who probably needs to die at the end of the game. I'll end up choosing all of the lines that make me sound like Fenris.. how this ability is a plague to my soul. ![]()
How I long to just be a normal adventuer or dashing rogue.

That's why I said it's unlikely - there are already confirmed LIs. Although on second thought it might not be 100% out of the question to have a spirit/mortal romance, since Anders was a romance option despite being merged with Justice.

My theory is that it was the actual event of bring forced physically into the Fade by the ginormous life ending magical explosion that gives you your power. In essence you are part of the rip and that's why you can influence it.

what if following that first cataclysmic event, like wynne, you were special but. . . on borrowed time? whatever the power is that's been given to you, i doubt it's accidental and i doubt it'll end up being a blessing. more like you're a very specific tool. and when your task is done, and you're no longer useful, you'll die as you were meant to in the original blast. unless, maybe, you play the game exactly right, and earn your survival. . .

My money's on something Flemeth/Morrigan related.
