Too bad for Irving. I rather liked him...

Too bad for a lot of people. I think Bioware intentionally wants people feeling angry/sad when the play the first part of the game.

That's a huge concern for me.  Because Mass Effect 3 opening even without the trial could have been so much better if we were allowed to talk to Anderson, Vega, VS, and other Alliance people.

I hope in DA:I we have the option to talk(and by talk I don't mean auto dialogue, I mean real conversations) with a lot of the people at the Summit, but also the option to skip right to the explosion, so on second and third playthroughs, don't have to spend 20-30 minutes talking with everyone.

But in Mass Effect 3,  =D you go not time!!!!   To talk!! Reapers be coming down!! RAINING horror  down on EARTH!! RIGHT NOW!! , Reapers be.. taking out several dozen Alliances ships like ants!!.   YOU GOT run!! no time to talk!!  REAPERS BE ATTACKING RIGHT FRONT OF YOU! blowing up the alliances ships, front of you. heck killing off the top brass leaders of the Republic, like they were RAG DOLLS!! >.<   you can't be talking to Vega,, be, HI how's it going!. HECK NO!!   YOU GOT TO RUN, GET ON THE NORMANDY,  GET  OFF EARTH!   THE WHOLE REASON YOU DON'T BE TALKING.. BECAUSE THEY BE ATTACKING NOW!!  :P :D   ^_^ B) ;) :)

Indeed, would have for Justinia V to die without even meeting her, that'd just be a huge waste of potential.

Yeah, I'm hoping that we won't be thrown immediately into the action again, too. Ideally I'd like the game-play to beginning prior to the talk(s) at the peace gathering. Maybe something like this, for example:

A scene opens in which our protagonist and a temp companion have literally just arrived at the peace gathering, people are preparing for the Divine to take center stage, crowds are gathering and perhaps a few people are selling their wares (cos obviously we'll need to grab a few potions 'n' stuff before getting sucked into the Fade). The temp companion (maybe he/she is a long term childhood friend/family member/sweetheart/mentor/whatever) asks you why you decided to come here in the first place, we then pick from a bunch of reasons: "the fighting has to stop, I support peace!/Figured I could pick pocket a few nobles/I want to murder knife a few Shems/I dunno, boredom?/etc" thus allowing us to begin shaping our protagonist's personality. Eventually the game-play kicks in and we can run around talking to npcs, buy a few items, do a few mundane side quests relating to the peace gathering, talk to our temp companion and generally get a feel for the new gameplay mechanics and our new protagonist. After doing a set amount of tasks a scene starts and the Divine (or whoever) starts talking about brokering peace, blah blah blah mages, blah blah blah Templars, blah blah civil wars and the Chantry, blah blah blah... *the sky starts to go dark and a rumbling noise from the sky can be heard* BOOM! The Fade rips open, we get sucked in and everyone else dies, including your temp companion who probably just declared his/her undying love for you because dramaz and fan tears!

So basically it would kinda serve as a tutorial, lol.

I don't think we'll really see and Dalish or Qunari there

Well, I did also speculate that :

Assuming the peace summit is for the Mage/Templar war, the various races being present could be explained this way:
Each Inquisitor is an emissary accompanying their faction-

Humans: The humans could come from numerous factions - Mages, Templars, Chantry representatives, even nobles would all have cause to involve themselves in the discussion, since the Circles do play a large part in human society.

Elves: The Dalish have mages in their clans, so they may need to turn up to the discussion, even if it's only to reaffirm that 'everyone should stay out of our business'.

Dwarves: The dwarves may need to keep an eye on the conflict in order to protect their interests in the lyrium trade (controlled by the Chantry and consumed by both Mages and Templars).

Qunari/Kossith: Mages are born into the Vashoth community as well, meaning that these groups may need to involve themselves in the discussion. Alternatively, they could be mercenaries, hired to protect one faction or the other.

So it would be possible to have Mages, Templars, the Chantry, the Dalish, the Qunari, the Carta/Merchants Guild, etc. all present.

Maybe that was the reason he sended Cullen to Kirkwall. He didn't want him at his retirement party :P

Sounds awesome, sign me up.

Although I didn't really mind the "trial by fire" version of the tutorial in DA2, I definitely prefer the DAO flavor more.

I think the flow of the current speculation sounds very on point, and chances are good that more than one dev will chuckle at how close some of you came to hitting the mark.

:) I think we'll get to wonder a bit, maybe get a little back story on ourselves and the major players.

 Being that we'll probable be there as part of a security detail, we'll notice something hinky as the talks begin.

 We go to investigate as  the talks continue in the background.

:o That's when we stumble upon Big Bad's henchmen in the process of the dastardly deed.

 Our attempted interference causes it to go awry, not stopping the explosion, but causing it to not go as planned for Big Bad(not as controlled or bigger/smaller than expected?)

 But it also throws us bodily into the Fade and as a side effect Glowy Hand!

B) In short, we may not be able to save the talks, but at least we get to ruin Big Bad's day and become Special Snowflakes.

Hm, so either way the Guardian from DA:O and the Urn of Sacred Ashes are toast huh?

I hope that the big event won't just be a sudden bolt from the heavens and then your character wakes up in fade...

I prefer the beginning to involve walking around talking to people, doing a few minor quests. I really think it makes you become more invested in the story and characters. I really hated that the start of DA2 only involved fighting the darkspawn and when your sibling died it was like "...whatever..."

I'm really curious if the fade part will be playable or only BOOM ... *Cassandra finds you* with amnesia mystery we uncover during the game  :P

I really like missing memory stories so I'm hoping for the latter.

As well during sex scenes i would rather put that into gameplay. ;)

Rather doubt that bio would show naked characters.

That or the DR makes Wardens so virile and Morrigan so fertile that she can still get impregnated through two articles of clothing. :P

This is exactly how I imagined it. it would be kwl if the temp companion was race/class specific. It would be a nice reminder of origins without actually having to have origins.

Um... I confess I can never stop myself from talking to absolutely everyone no matter what playthrough I'm on. First... second... thirteenth... It's a sickness. It really is.

Sometimes I will even go through all the investigative dialogue options only to skip through the responses. Just so, I dunno, I can tell myself I've "done" it all. Compulsive completionism ftw.

Looks like a syndrome that I've got

Or alternatively you could be a passerby/ observer to the event.  Especially if you are a Kossith.  Like observers to the United States Senate when it is in session or any other government or significant body.  Just a tourist, going to check out the scenary.

Though, to the rest of the thread as a whole and what the beginning chapter will consist of I actually wonder if the Inquisitor will be at the summit itself.  If the summit is actually at the Urn of Sacred Ashes temple itself then the trailer indicates that the Inquisitor might not be there.  He is looking up at a mountain.  You had to climb a mountain to get to the Urn.  Cassandra mentions 'thousands of people dying' so the explosion could be huge because I find it hard to believe that thousands of people will show up for such an important peace summit.  I could be wrong and actually hope I am because I think it would be much cooler if the Inquisitor did move around the area and talked to the major players for the player to get acclimated to what is going on in the game, but I am preparing myself for a slight dissapointment and something more along the lines of it being a mystery on how the Inquisitor got the way he/ she did.

Actually, I think the combat may start when we meet Varric. Makes more sense for his "Watch yourself. It's raining demons out here." line to be during the first combat part.

I think that is a little after the breach. I think you do the intro solo(with NPC soldiers), then walk out of the fade and talk to Cassandra and then meet Varric in the world just hours after the event.

Wasn't it mentioned during Witch Hunt when you travel to the tower to get info on the Eluvian?
