When does this happen?

When the armies march on Denerim, there's a Redcliffe soldier who bids good-bye to his wife and child. When you reach Denerim, you get a scene of darkspawn killing people; a hurlock pauses, a wounded solider in his hands, to look up and observe the onrushing armies. It looks like a set-up for a last-minute heroes-to-the-rescue right up until he slits the soldier's throat.

Didn't know that was Tomas (the villager who first greets the Warden on the bridge into Redcliffe during the Connor quest).

I usually have Tomas die at Redcliffe anyways.

Just because I sit and watch all of them until Lloyd (the tavern keeper) dies. If anyone else survives, it's a bonus.

When does this happen?

In the cutscene that follows Alistair's/Anora's speech when you arrive at Denerim for the final battle.

Edit:  'd by Corker.

As for the saddest moments, this game has quite a lot of those. I'll share the ones that are most memorable to me:

Leaving the Dalish clan, and then encountering Tamlen as a ghoul.

Leaving your parents behind as a Cousland and the last conversation you have with your parents.

Isolde's reaction if you chose to kill Connor. I'm among the people who find her voice annoying, but that part was extremely well voice acted.

The Warden's funeral, especially if you romanced someone and your LI survives.

Return to Ostagar DLC. The way I role-played my Warden she didn't care about the king at all (she's a Dalish) but those flashbacks with the same music that plays when the darkspawn charge at Duncan gets me every time I play the DLC.

I thought it was silly that they take control and give me this little cutscene where I'm all sad about it.

And then 20 minutes later, me and Loghain take him down and feed him to the wolves.

Pick any one of the companion conversations before entering Denerim after the landsmeet. I thought a couple were cheesy, but overall well written. Even Dog got to me a bit.

And the look on Teagans face when he realizes the archdemon was killed. With everyone celebrating he seems to be the only one that realized the gravity of what just happened

Nearly everything in the Human Noble storyline. The death of their parents, sister-in-law and nephew in the Origin, the conversation after Ostagar where everyone shoots down your plan to find Fergus, the shock in Wynne's voice when she learns you are the "Last of the Couslands", seeing your father in the Gauntlet and being called "Pup" one last time. And if you hooked up with Iona, discovering her daughter in the Alienage and waiting for her mother to come home, but being unable to do anything to help her.

The Dalish Warden leaving their clan, learning the truth from Ashalle about their parent's deaths, discovering Tamlen's fate as a ghoul and realising that Duncan was pulling that Obi-Wan "from a certain point of view" deal since he never said he was dead, only beyond helping.

The Dwarven Noble being framed for Trian's death (if you didn't kill him) and later discovering upon your return that your father has since died, with your home about to descend into Civil war while your traitorous brother vies for the throne. For Female Nobles, discovering that Gorim made it to the surface, but had since married another woman, assuming that you were dead. And if you slept with the noble hunters, finding out you have a son that's been stripped of his caste as well. Even if you get him admitted to Harrowmount or Bhelen's noble house, there's still the issue that your duty to the Wardens and life on the surface means that you'll probably rarely, if ever, get to see your son in Orzammar.

The Dwarf Commoner having to leave Rica behind when they leave to join the Wardens, since it's obvious that she was the one who raised them because their own mother was too busy drowning her sorrows to do so. And Leske's betrayal when the Dwarf Commoner returns to Orzammar, since he was your oldest friend.

During the Mage Origin, watching Lily being carted off to Aenoar despite having done nothing wrong and being just as unaware as you were that Jowan was a Blood Mage, especially since at no point in the rest of the game can do anything to help her. If you spared him at Redcliffe, the (bugged and only accesable via console) quest "Jowan's Intention", where you discover Jowan has changed his name and is attempting to redeem himself by helping refugee's escape the Blight, which includes a brief but touching conversation where you can admit that you're proud of your old friend.

As for the romances, an unhardened Alistair breaking up with any female Warden who isn't a Human Noble, Zevran's epilogue slide if you make the Ultimate Sacrifice where he's never able to love again and most of Morrigan's romance arc is a mixture of bittersweet and heartwarming.

Spoilers:

Leaving behind Bryce and Eleanor, and Bryce in the Gauntlet.

Dalish leaving behind her clan.

Tamlen as a shriek (especially heartbreaking if you trigger the flirtation/romance)

Alistair killing the archdemon if romanced.

PC's funeral (and the look on Leliana's face if you romanced her).

The scene when Cailan and the army first encounter the horde.  Knowing what's coming always makes me cry.

Watching Isolde kill Connor.  Much as I find the character annoying, the actress did a fantastic job at that moment.

Ostagar, Duncan's realization that Loghain had abandoned them.

That look of pure hopelessness after killing the ogre that killed Caillan

I think he was just confused. I stole a silverite rune and a potent health potion from him. He's probably thinking "WTF? Where they'd go?!"

So, you're saying that YOU are the reason he didn't have that health poultice on him? That silverite rune and health poultice might have enabled him to survive Ostagar!  ;)

For me, the saddest moment is always when the credits start to roll.

But both games hit me hard in the feels. Mom & Dad Cousland's deaths, especially. Watching Alistair kill the Archdemon, too. I think I cried through the whole funeral... and then immediately reloaded and did the Dark Ritual.

Lol.

I've never done this, but I think I'm going to make a dwarf commoner who is a major ****** that screws with his entire group.

Saying goodbye to dog. I didn't want to risk him getting hurt when I went to fight the dragon.

Iona, the elf woman. being killed.

Seeing Alistair leave after sparing Loghain and crowing myself king (prince-consort, that wench keeps screwing me) beside Anora. I was angry at his behavior and actions but he was still a friend.

If you can convince Ser Cauthrien that Loghain is wrong, she is in tears (well almost) when she asks you to stop him, to save him from himself. She knows that she may have condemned Loghain to death, but she realizes Loghain must be stopped.

I did it on my elf actually... but it'd be better on a dwarf. If Orzammar is any indication, being a bastard is pretty common.

I've been reconsidering my Canon warden as a dwarf anyways.

Now that I'm aware of the bug that prevents me from persuading Ser Cauthrien, she now survives my canon playthrough. I think the moment is much better that way. I'll miss the Summer Sword. :P

My canon character will always be the human noble, but for my alternates, the dwarf would be the mean son of a b*tch that mouths off to everyone everywhere, and my city elf is a "murder knife cultist". Poor Brother Genitivi. The elf doesn't even care about Andraste's ashes that much.

You can still get the Summer Sword by kiting her back into Anora's room in the Arl of Denerim's estate, kill her (dropping out of combat), and then looting her. If you want her to survive for the Landsmeet you can then let one of her remaining soldiers kill you (I guess she gets resurrected from skeleton and bones). This is the route I usually go, because the Captured! quest is too good and you can still encounter her at the palace.

Eh, I don't miss it that much :P I just avoid the combat at the Arl of Denerim's estate and go straight to the Captured! quest. Sten and Morrigan are easily my favorite of the lot to do this with. Sten's comment when he opens the cell is the best.

I used to like human noble much more, but I feel DA2 improved on it. It's like a mix of noble and commoner together. And I get that snazzy Mac Tir armor for rogues.. So I'm like a female Loghain. Heh. I just wish I had Carver's warcry. "That's how we did it back in Ferelden!"

I was prepared to cry at my own funeral but the only sad thing really was a small catch in Al's voice. Not even Cyrion seemed too upset and as for Zevran, he did nothing. No railing or ranting or weeping or anything. Probably the saddest thing was I thought 'oh that's it?' -_-

For me it's seeing Duncan's face as he sees Cailan dead, the signal lit on the Tower of Ishal and then when he gets whacked by the darkspawn.

Iona, the elf woman. being killed.

For me it was more upsetting that we see her daughter later in the game and can do absolutely nothing to help her.

There's the Revenants of the Black Vials quest.
Each of them has a message that describes the demon's crimes.
The tragedy lies in who had to bind each one:

First: Cale Viazagat, revenant and perversion of an only son.
Second: Nethamas Bigal, revenant and perversion of a fine daughter.
Third: Argruth Massaad, revenant and perversion of a treasured mother.
Fourth: Quametha Kagat, revenant and perversion of an honored father.
Fifth: Shamas Goodson, revenant and perversion of a rare friendship.
Sixth: Anton Wither, revenant and perversion of a friend not met.

Each demon was bound by their own family and friends; To find each demon-possessed corpse, and defeat it.The fifth is marked with only five thumbprints instead of six, implying that the revenant was himself one of the former hunters. The last one was even signed in blood by a child.

Leaving the Couslands behind

Alistair saying goodbye to the woman he loved before sacrificing himself

Seeing that Tamlen`s fate was becoming a ghoul but that he still cares about his friend
