Subtitles seem to have two options in-game: (1) conversations or (2) conversations and ambient dialogue. But to me subtitles are only valuable in ambient dialogue where I don't quite hear that characters are speaking in the background. I'd like for us to have that option.

I totally agree so much with this. I like knowing what people say in ambient dialogue, but I hate having the subtitles cover parts of people during cut-scenes.

Similarly, we should be able to do the opposite.  All combinations of subtitles should be available.

This would be good, but cutscene only is already available in Bioware games so this is sort of irrelevant.

Yeah, I'd like to actually be able to see people during cutscenes and not have the background music and noise for the rest of the game turned down to almost nothing.

This is a good thought.  I probably won't use ambient-only myself just because I VASTLY prefer to have total subtitles on, but it's a good thought.

Sure. Other games do this, I don't see why not. Two different toggles, one for ambient, one for conversation.

same here, most of the time i dont need to read them, but keep them on in case a character says something that is indecipherable without them

So very much this. I always keep regular subs off, because otherwise I'd just speed through conversations on the text, but I can never understand everything the background NPCs are saying.

Great idea! While we are at it, I would also like a volume slider for ambient conversations. I hate it when I can't hear them and if I turn the volume up, the music still overpowers the spoken stuff.

Just so you know, there is already a slider for that: Sound Effect Volume. It's under Audio Options. If you crank that and decrease the music volume, your footstep sounds will be louder and stuff will squeak and whistle at you or whatnot, but ambient dialogue will be much louder.

This would be a fantastic addition. Stannis approves.

I'd like that, although I don't know if I'd consistently use it, because I don't like clutter.... although just ambient conversations, like what the OP says, which are often so sorely missed, sounds like a good compromise.  Also, how about bring back a log of all recent conversations?  Didn't DAO have something like that in the journal (or was that just the full convos?)?  I love hearing the banter and I hate it when I miss something.  And how about pause?  Can we pause the game during cutscenes and conversations?

This... I always use the xmb on the ps3 in conversations and stuff. Choices too, I like to have time to really think about them and always feel weird watching the characters look around but be absolutely silent... Anyway I won't be able to do that on ps4 which is kind of a bummer.

I want subtitles for everything.

Edit: I also want to be able to select subtitles for different languages.

I just want subtitles readable. the small small lettering on the head of the people during party banter is terribly difficult to read (expecially if you play on console and don't have a big tv) can't it be written in the same place as the rest of the subtitles? and can't those be like in Fallout 3/NV or Skyrim with a darker background and bigger lettering, so who don't speak english fluently can read the subtitles whitout killing his/her eyes?

Fallout 3/NV and Skyrim were dubbed too, but try to read this subtitles on a tv. not hard, isn't it?

than try this!!! People can't play with a pair of binoculars!!! it's ridicolous!!!

since DAI won't be dubbed in all the languages, at least give us decent readable subtitles!!! :crying:

They will usually be based on the default language for origin and/or your OS.

Yes i know but i am asking for an option to be able to select a different language for the subtitles than to what we are listening to so i can listen in French and have subtitles in English.

There was a thread about the languages based on where you were and being able to choose them. A bioware dev responded to questions. It maybe in this section or scuttlebut
