its only a rumor but i thought i would like to share it if nobody did yet

The next Mass Effect game is most probably going to be showcased at E3, and today we learned something about its possible title, thanks to the industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, who has a quite solid track record with what he relies from his sources.

According to Rasheed, that previously mentioned that the game won’t be titled “Mass Effect 4,” the actual title will be “Mass Effect: _ _nt_ _t” where the undescrores are letters that he teasingly kept hidden.

After a quick internal consultation here at DualShockers we determined that the only real possibility to fill in the blanks is “Mass Effect: Contact.

There simply isn’t another word that would fit there and also work with the Mass Effectfranchise.

A title like Mass Effect: Contact definitely points in the direction of a prequel, possibly centered around the First Contact War, which is a pivotal moment of the Mass Effect lore.

While Rasheed has a definitely solid track record and “Contact” fits the little puzzle perfectly, we should of course still consider this just a rumor until the title is officially announced, probably at E3, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that would find the perspective of a prequel set during the First Contact War extremely pleasing.

Of course you can feel free to try and find different solutions, and to post them in the comments below.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on a prequel either.

I really don't want to go over all the racial conflicts and problems again.

Humans and Turians don't like each other.

The Krogan opining about the Genophage.

The Quarians and the Geth.

I would much rather play in a setting were all of these issues are resolved; something set after ME 3.

Hmm. Didn't they mention at some point that they'd like to do a prequel... or have a survey asking fans what they thought about prequels...

Anyway I feel like the term "prequel" has been floating around so much that I really wouldn't be surprised if that's what it ended up being.

Personally I keep changing my mind regarding what I'd like ME4 to be. I guess I can see the appeal of both a sequel and a prequel.

i could honestly see this to be true, and if it is.

I dont know some of me wants a new mass effect game so bad, but the other half of me

dont want a prequel.

i want it to take place after the events of mass effect 3...

but remember its only a rumor so.

If the word is contact, then contact by itself =/= first contact war. Thing about it is, if you're going to do a prequel and keep humanity in the game you can only really go back so far... like first contact. Sigh. I shall live in hope that this is not the case for the next game. If it is a prequel I'll be sad.

The next game would be focussed on exploration, correct? Not much new to explore when you've already visited and colonized the planets you are able to reach in previous games. Also, I believe that the peeps at Bioware are very much aware of the fact that, according to the reactions I've read so far, a large portion of the fans feel that a prequel isn't the best option at this time. I'm curious, but we'll just wait and see.

Hope it's not about the first contact war. I don't care about going backward, i have zero interest in a prequel and i'm sure many people would agree with me.

They have an incredibly unique chance to start anew and shape a new universe, it would be such a waste to take the easy and lazy way and focus on a prequel. I really wish this is just a joke to mess with us.

Contact != Prequel

I agree. Contact could mean that the Council races contact a new alien species similar to how the Rachni Wars started. This becomes more likely if you consider the other rumors about a new alien race back when ME:Next was first announced. I highly doubt that a game set durning the First Contact War would suddenly introduce a whole new alien race just for that conflict, and then have them magically disappear for ME 1-3.

I'm surprised they ruled out "Mass Effect: Contest" so easily. Clearly the next game is about a Hanar trying to prove his merit in an all-Batarian league of professional three-legged sack racers. Open your eyes, journalists!

Very disappointing if true that it turns out to be a prequel.

A prequel centered around the First Contact War would really be a bad idea. All the canon and continuity problems that would entail...it would be the equivalent of this dreadful Enterprise tv show.

I really hope it is either a false rumor or "Contact" means something different.

That means the Worst scenario. After Mass Effect 3 most gamers wants a Sequel. If new Mass Effect is a Prequel that means, we can write what we want to, because they are ignoring that. I think it is just a rumor, nothing more. We know that the hero will be a human, and there will be a two new races. What is the point of adding a two new races during The First War Contact. Adding new species while mankind has discovered mass relays (if this is a prequel) makes new plot holes which Mass Effect series has lot.

Okay prequel folk, I want you to stop for a second, take a big deep breath. Inhale...exhale. Okay, relaxed? Now, think. Just a little thought. Contact does not mean prequel.

Mass Effect established that an overwhelming majority of the galaxy is undiscovered. Partially due to time/resources. Partially due to interest. Partially due to scope. Partially due to relay activation sanctions put in place after the Rachni war. Also consider that the series has made it very clear other species likely exist. While not much was done with them, the Raloi are exactly this: a civilised, space faring species that was discovered/met during the Mass Effect trilogy arc, not before or after.

Contact != prequel. That's not what the word means. That's not what it implies. In fact, it could very well imply the premise for a sequel: first contact with new species in a post-war galaxy.

I wont buy a prequel, simple as that for me. I either want to continue in the story or spend my money with another company like ubisoft or dare i say it, activision. Think its about time bioware woke upto the fact that it wasnt the universe of mass effect that made us love the game, it was the people we were and the people we were with that made an impact on the universe that made the mass effect universe which they tore the heart of with me3 star child and silly ending.

And i dont need people to try and tell me well i wont be buying it then, its my choice and not a choice or opinion im forcing on anyone else.

I doubt it's a prequel.  I'll play it regardless, but "Contact" could be in reference to the Galactic Community encountering a new race.  Think about it.

For the first time, there was no galaxy-wide harvesting of life.  Unlike the Asari, the first new race to arrive won't find an empty or abandoned Citadel.  A war would be well within the realm of possibilities.  It could be caused by a misunderstanding or it could be cause by a new race that isn't willing to share.

We've seen concept art of what could be new, unknown races.  I think it's a sequel guys.

Hey, for all we know it could be about the Leviathans coming back and the galaxy having first "Contact" with them, right? It could be about just some other race being found, or about us being a sort of Enterprise type crew, sent to explore the galaxy and initiate "Contact" with new races. Or it could be some space empire that was never encountered before that we are now just have Contact with. Come on people, it doesn't mean prequel, far from it.

If you talk to Barla Vonn in ME1, he mentions there are 'dozens of species' in the Wards. I never encountered dozens.

We haven't even seen all the known species yet. Hell, we don't even know all known species.

Besides, when reading the article it doesn't even have to be 'contact'. It could also be 'content', or whatever.

Oh man, I hope not.

I have very little interest in a prequel, and they couldn't possibly choose a more boring setting than the First Contact War. It was a minor border skirmish that only involved the Alliance and the Turians. The scope is far too small to be an interesting setting, and we already know its going to end with the Council calling time out.
