Turians have biotics guys. Maybe you could play as humans or Turians in a first contact wars game in singleplayer or multiplayer which would give you an excuse to choose Turian  over your own species while humans could have some new unique classes instead like medic, grenadier, or heavy weapons specialist or bomb squad. A first contact war singleplayer game would be perfect for squad coop for 2-4 players and perhaps feature multiple protagonists/pov perspectives on both sides. There's some great opportunity for bigger scale multiplayer battles (see later).

I am well aware of the existing cannon on this topic but it sucks ass... so why not let Bioware  Montreal create their own new cannon if we're effectively starting from the very beginning that does the concept justice. Humanity's first contact and war with an alien species would be epic as all hell. As I've said before think the Alamo in space.

Going with the assumption that its a new cannon and everything is possible maybe the Krogan, Batarians and anti council terminus species/mercs  could side with us in an attempt to gain a potentially powerful ally before the council make nice and turn us against them. With the arrival of the terminus species into this conflict just looking for any excuse to start war with the council the stakes get much bigger and humanity finds themselves at the centre of a huge conflict over the Attican traverse that they don't really understand.

The terminus systems are offering freedom while the council races are offering order and community. Fighting on the side of the council could be the turians, Asari, Salarians, and both new and existing council races. Quarians and geth could be added to multiplayer later. Perhaps the geth are looking for an organic ally not on either side and the quarians form an uneasy alliance with the council being the only ones who have experience fighting the geth and of course bearing responsibility for creating them in the first place after defying council orders. Quarians want to be part of the galactic community but are shunned. They need the support of the council races to defeat the geth who are of course banned in council space.
Humans could have access to terminus and geth weaponry and technology. The arrival of humanity could be a game changer that might tip the balance of galactic power in favor of the non council races.

Playing as other species besides humans and turians could be possible in muliplayer and perhaps future single player expansions. As for multiplayer we could have cooperative squad based deathmatches based around objectives involving the council races (blue) vs. terminus races (red).

Turians

Asari

Salarians

Quarians

Drell

Vs

Humans

Krogans

Batarians

Vorcha

Geth (imagine being hacked and becoming a hostile npc for 15 sec while watching in horror as you butcher your squadmates)

(boss npcs and mooks on both sides, e.g. Elcor waking tanks, how about playing or hacking a geth prime for real?)

So I know a lot of this sounds crazy but i thought it a good idea to illustrate the potential for a complete creative rebirth of the series. Some of you will always hate the idea of first contact but why not let the new studio cut their teeth here so that they can attempt more exiting material in the future with some degree of success via a good track record and foundation from which to build from? If they do decide to cut loose it could be a great move, better imo than attempting to reconcile the endings of me3 which would only lead to a disaster imo.

Why people seem to think that the name "Contact" would mean prequel?

It could also be about an Extragalactic contact, achieved due to technological leap after the Reaper War...

If they change the canon, it won't be the First Contact War. The other thing about changing the canon is with all the negativity around Mass Effect 3 I can't see them wanting to mess around with the lore for it could cause another critical mass of dislike towards the game.

well the asari are the only ones that look most like humans. everyone else is definitely alien.

I was talking more about their psychology than their physique, though. For example, Reapers are alien, but turians are just humans with scales.

If it's a prequel concerning First Contact War then it'll be very dissapointing

I can't see that working really well either, for if their thinking process is too alien it could frustrate more people then the amount that might enjoy it.  If thinking is too alien a player might not be able to understand the reasoning behind their actions or it just doesn't work.

First, I agree that most known races are not that far away from what humanity itself has produced in the past. We have had (and still have) vastly different people with different ways of life, so it's only natural to draw inspiration from that. Still, radically different races like the Rachni or the Geth are there as well.

Second, I don't think "Contact" implies a prequel/a game about the First Contact war, but rather the known races encountering new races. In the photos posted on N7 day by BioWare, we have seen some aliens that are not from one of the known races.

I myself think "Contact" is a great subtitle for the next ME game. Short and sweet. I would appreciate a more personal, intimate story, with more possibilities for character development of the main character.

Bring it on, BioWare, I'm excited and trust you'll delight us with a fresh experience. Just... bring it out sooner rather than later pleeeeaaaase...

I don't think this could be a prequel, wasn't it said that choices you may have made in the previous Mass Effect games have some sort of impact on the next series of games? It would seem that the game could take place concurrently with the previous games storyline instead of being a sequel which has been said isn't going to happen.

I'm against aliens being playable for this very reason. But one way or another, what I meant is that it would be more interesting to try and make new aliens actually different from humans and hard to understand. Lots of science fiction do this, and it doesn't have to be radical either. If anything, ME is the weird one when it makes pretty much all its aliens identical to humans in all but physical appearance.

I doubt this is true. As, like Chris states why give a known leaker a chance to leak again?

Still I've always had a theory that there are multiple Citadels distributed across the galaxy thus insuring species from all corners are given the full Reaper cultivation treatment. A game where you come into contact with another dominion with it's own Citadel and government would be pretty damn cool. Although I do think the existing species we have like the Drell and the Elcor could do with fleshing out before the introduction of new species.

Multiple citadels? Why not. The galaxy is big so everything is possible. But they would have to retcon a few things about the Citadel's primary function.

Once more I say we get a sequel with some sort of lifeboat fleet that jumps into the unknown regions of the universe during the Reaper War.

I don't even think it has to be another Citadel, but even long range relays that have gone missing would work, similar to the one to Rachni space that Saren was looking for in ME1.

Rumours and titles aside, who says that a new Mass Effect has to be either a prequel or a sequel? It could be perfectly set at the same time as the first three games, just not centered on Shepard.

For the record, though, a sequel would make the least sense to me, simply because of ME3's endings. Humanity and the rest of the races may be extinct, or half-machines, or whatever. It's not as if the endings themselves made much sense in the first place, but still...

A game taking place in the First Contact War seems rather boring and unimaginative, we've already learned about it enough, I don't see how they make it interesting. It's not like it was that long ago before the trilogy either, it's not very mysterious. And it worries me that they picked it so it could just be the setting for a multiplayer focused shooter.

I hope contact means, a discovery of new locations and systems with new aliens.

Having thought about it, I actually find myself thinking what I never thought I would.  I want them to reboot the franchise.  Make the first contact war less of a prequel and more of a reintroduction to the universe in a separate timeline then the Shepard trilogy.  Tell new stories, some based on the old ones, but others new.  Build a new universe.  The Shepard trilogy is going to be heavy baggage for the franchise until this happens, lets just get it over with now.

Let the stoning begin, hahaah.

They're not going to reboot it. It's way too early for something like that. Games rarely ever get 'rebooted'; in fact, I can't think of one example.

There's no need to "reboot" the entire series when said reboot could simply be an 'alternate universe' style sequel to the trilogy where a specific chain of events is locked down as a template for new stories to be told. The series is already primed for a new start.

Tomb Raider is an obvious one

A reboot won't clear the baggage and I think rebooting the franchise will cause additional baggage because the expected "save import" wouldn't be available which might make some people happy and at the same time make other very frustrated.  There really isn't a magic bullet to fix the issues.

Please God,

No first contact war in ME: Next game. In fact why have an ME at all unless it is to move forwards, not back in time.
