Dear BW store - why so little women's apparel?

Now probably somebody is going to tell me: "because supply & demand?".

I have no idea about your gender & size statistics, surely the BW store gathers data from their customer database.
I'd be really curious to know more about that, I mean is it really that female customers are so few?

Or is it rather that the BW store *thinks* that they are.

I regularly browse through the store now and then, I'm a woman, I love clothes, I love ME & DA and I have money I'd love to spend there on apparel.
If there was anything for me to buy actually.
The only reason why I created an account in that store is because I had been promised free credits to spend there - because I'll confess I have zero interest in any other type of merchandise there.

So today I thought "oh hey, let's see what's new".

Now we all know DAI is approaching and this is on the homepage:

banner-da-inquisitorandgreytees.jpg

I'll be nice, and I'll even add a link: http://www.biowarest...=82&price=20-20

I was thinking, "oh these look great, why didn't I think of that before? DA tees I could wear while jogging to show my GW pride.".

I eagerly clicked and lo and behold, 3 designs... only they're exclusively men's.

370x370xtee-da-commanderofthegrey-front.

370x370xtee-da-greywardensigil-front.jpg

tee-da-inquisitor-front.jpg

And no, I'm not buying men's S t-shirts.

Was I disappointed?
Slightly.
I should totally thank the BW store though, it has made it possible for me to save money for some time now, money i was able to spend on other goods, including clothes.

Now maybe this is because there's not enough demand for women's apparel, I personally think it's rather because the supply isn't rich enough, or attentive to the market potential out there. I don't really care of course, because I don't work at BW nor do I own EA stocks. And chances that BW will bankrupt and stop producing those wonderful games just because their store doesn't sell women's apparel are tiny to say the least.

So I'm not complaining, and my life will go on as usual until DAI's release probably.

Still, when I'm considering that:

Men's apparel:

vs. this:

Women's apparel:

I'm really puzzled by the low number of women's t-shirt designs offered compared to men's (more than 3 times higher).
Another strange aspect is the exclusive feature of bottoms. Why would anybody think that bottoms would exclusively sell better than tops for women? I mean is there any other piece of apparel more complicated to buy online than pants? Even if they're joggers? And is there anything easier to buy online that tee-shirts? Especially if the store is able to provide for a constant cotton quality and size chart? If I had bought a S shirt 3 years ago in X color with Y design and would have loved it, then as time goes by, I would be likelier and likelier to buy again from that online shop with each purchase? Seems reasonable enough.
Why is it that the apparel section of merchandise shops can never be apprehended by their store owners like plain fashion shops?

Now maybe somebody will answer: "because they're not, precisely". In that case, nothing to see here, and I'll just make my own designs and print that more or less legally on custom tees. At least they will look exactly like I want them to be, and that's perfectly fine. And you guys are generally nice enough to allow various forms of fan art & creations, and I'm extremely thankful for that.

All economic aspects aside and on a more personal level, I'll confess though that I can't help but feel like BW has little love for its female customers. Which is totally fine, I mean, I understand, you guys have your priorities, I have mine too.

It would be certainly cool to have a wider range of products, a bit like Disney does on its store, please take a look at various examples of what you can do in terms of design variety and appeal with franchised material without those items looking like awfully bland and generic (which is the case for most of your women's apparel at the moment in my modest opinion):

tumblr_n579ht4e6h1sqb3q9o1_1280.jpg

Among that selection, the price range is between 12$ and 45$ for the "trendiest".
Even I would consider buying those, and I have zero interest in the Disney brand.
Maybe you feel like BW franchises aren't enough part of the pop culture to be able to embrace such a large female crowd?
Something tells me you'd be surprised. Or maybe it's a question of sourcing? Design budget? Sales volume?

On a side note, as I said before, I'd love to have sterling silver jewelry.

Could be steel jewelry for the ME franchise, and silver + leather jewelry for the DA franchise for instance.

You guys gave us wonderful and deep worlds that we all love, I would just be so happy to carry part of them with me, and the possibilities in terms of design are so huge!

Eh! Maybe I'll post a couple of ideas here ;P

////////////////// Update: 08/03/2014

Probably old news, but I just saw those additions, which are very welcome.

Black is black, grey is grey, eh? ;P

I think the Witch of the Wild one is a great effort and $20 is a reasonable price - I have faith BW store.

Not too many players read forums, and even less visit anything other than their preferred games sections. Lack of replies can be seen as a 'lack of interest proof', but I remember that same topic in DAI-General (existed before 'the Scuttlebutts') was active for some time.

Hopefully, someone somewhere admits, that some women like BW games enough to buy goods, but they dislike generic male 'fan' clothes (usually black and shapeless).

I don't have much hopes after 'N7 Leather Jacket', though. An expensive leather jacket, exclusively designed for men. And that's after so many femSheps were pissed because of an exclusive mShep-only in-game item.  Really, BW?..

Clapping hands in the air, and hoping that the upcoming EU store will have more to offer than few male sized shirts.

obviously they should be focusing not just on gender equality in their games but also in their stores too. Disappointing that you have fewer choices.

Ooooh there is an EU shop coming? I can buy Mabari plushies then too? Yes???! :D When? Where? Is this confirmed to happen?

ETA: nevermind, I think I found out myself.

On topic: Yes! I support that! I want to spend all my hard earned monies on Bioware stuff, but I'm not going to wear generic men's apparel.

And here I thought that a person allowed to post here should be (more or less) familiar with the male\female anatomy basics and differences between two...

And it doesn't get much better with the sizing, either. Men get a rather generous (and reasonably accurate) range of sizes while women get what's actually a large-ish extra small through a small-ish extra large.

To be fair to Bioware, they're just using the wholesaler's sizing. But it would have been nice if they'd picked one that used reasonable sizing.

For what it's worth, I've found their sizes to run as expected (although I suppose it depends what you're comparing them to).

How/why do you classify them as men's, exactly?

Aside from the shape of the shirt, a men's small is generally similar in shoulder-size to a women's large (so obviously not a fit that works for the XS, S, M women).

If you're trying to make a point about size overlap or non-standard bodies or something, fair enough, but it's disingenuous to pretend not to be aware of basic stats regarding average body sizes when that's the main point here.

Anyway, more on topic, agreeing that it would be great to see a wider variety of shirts in women's sizes!

Would be nice to have cool videogame designed shirts without having to buy a guys medium/small. In my experience we tend to get stuck with girly designs and that's alright for some but not me. I used to just except that I was stuck wearing men shirts, but I realised as I grew up why should I? Hopefully after DAI comes out the store might be updated and then I can spend my precious pennies on bioware goodies.

I just pre-ordered the women's Ferelden t-shirt. While I like the shirt well enough, a major reason I bought it was I got the feeling they were testing the market. I would love love love more options for women's clothing.

I only have the ladies Qunari shirt, but I'd buy more if they'd offer more. I just don't like crew necks. I like a bit of a lower cut in the neck, and shirts that adjust for having an fairly ample chest, without looking like I'm wearing a tent.

I have quite a few pieces of merchandise from the BW store, in both men's and women's sizes. One of the other points of the women's wear that's a bit disappointing (and this is the case with most women's wear, so I don't exclusively fault Bioware for this) is that the women's shirts are often far flimsier and see through. I have to wear a camisole under my women's raglan Renegade shirt (which now also apparently is completely missing from the store) ), while some of the men's shirts from the store are thick and opaque, even in a lighter colour. I'm hoping that a slew of women's apparel will be on the horizon with the release of Inquisition.

On a side note, is Black Milk ever going to release part II of their Mass Effect gear? They had teased a really cute reversible N7 skater dress that was supposed to be included in "the next round" of releases for ME, along with other leggings, but there's been no word since.

I'd love it if they had more women's shirts in the store and the most recent offerings only being available in men's sizes was very disappointing. I know that clothing isn't a priority for a game company, especially women's clothing apparently, but it sure would be nice to have more options that don't require buying a men's shirt and then altering it to fit properly. That's the only option we really have at this point if we don't like the few designs they have in women's sizes.

Also, I totally agree about the fabric quality. The clothing industry's obsession with making women's shirts so thin you can see through them unless you wear three layers is ridiculous. If we ever get more options for women's shirts, my greatest hope is that we'll be able to wear them without layering up like it's winter when it's the middle of July.

Sanshee sells licensed shirts that I don't see on the Bioware store, and I'm pretty sure they offer ladies sizing for all of them.  Right now it's only Mass Effect for the shirts, but I know they have more in the works, and some of that will probably be DA:I (actually, I may have begged the owner for DA:I merch, but he couldn't tell me what his plans were on that front).

There is also a special N7 shirt they made that has male Shep on the unisex sizes and femShep on the ladies sizes, but it doesn't appear to be on the website yet.  Keep an eye out for that one--it's probably my favorite shirt by them.

@Lady Nuggins

Not all of them have female versions (probably sold out), but it's good to know that they exist.

Their jewelry looks good, by the way. I'd buy something like one of those for DA. A pendant or a brooch may be.

It's not 'mens' sizes. It's unisex.

Women's tees are stupid anyway, too bloody tight in all the wrong places.

So? Is that a reason good enough to make it look like a shapeless oversized potato bag?

Thank god for Redbubble. It may be pricy, but at least I can get a shirt that fits, is comfortable, and GASP, has a female Hawke or Shepard on it. Yeah there's a female Shepard shirt, one. One shirt.

I wish they used some of DA2-style art instead. But it's good to see an update.
