It's ultimately what made me stop playing and cancel my subscription. They promised s/s romance from the beginning and then did such a terrible job of implementing it as an after thought that I couldn't, in good faith, support the product. It's a shame, really, because I did enjoy the game somewhat.

Oh, and one more thing, you could also kill the gay guy which made for truly horrendous chat experiences as people proudly talked about killing him.....

People saying terrible things on the Internet? I don't believe you.

I know right? But this was an unending spam of adolescent male conversations about gay bashing when all I want to do is follow my Jedi path! I usually would just turn off the chat function because reporting them was just tiring....

I actually liked that Sith dude a bit on Makeb.

Shame that my Sith Warrior was already spoken for.

I did see a bit of the gay bashing going on though to.

Really glad I joined a guild then and there.

Was he bisexual or gay? I never got to Makeb with an empire character.

It's just disappointing that the best that the Austin team could do in three years is one NPC fling that is faction flagged.

...Also you playing a lesbian (by choice) once is not the same as gay people being forced to play straight people in almost every game...

Agreed. Some people clearly don't understand how hurtful it can be to play a game in which the whole world is "straight until proven otherwise." When the sexuality of all NPC's and PC's defaults to heterosexual unless implicitly stated to the contrary, it makes some of us feel very out of place.  Bioware has been really great at giving us gamers the freedom of choice, so when they talk about restrictions, some of us can’t help but feel initially wary.

I don’t want “straight gamers,” to have their choices limited either, that’s why my suggestion revolved around keeping the “all LI’s are bisexual mode,” but perhaps doing it in a more realistic way.

Being able to define the sexuality of my PC by engaging in a gay romance option does matter to me and it does affect the story and game play for me. It makes me feel included as who I am. It’s easy to say that it “doesn’t matter” and “it doesn’t affect the story or game play,” when you’re a part of a majority that’s always used to being represented.

So did you prefer the ambiguous sexuality system that DA2 had?

Please note that the artificial restrictions placed on who you can romance invalidate any concerns you may have about a particular ratio of sexual orientations being unrealistic.

.Also you playing a lesbian (by choice) once is not the same as gay people being forced to play straight people in almost every game...

See. I always found this statement strange. Before Mass effect and dragon age, I NEVER was able to romance anyone in my games, the games I played didn't have this feature. And I don't think many games have it. The first time I played Mass effect 2 and DAO, I missed the romance content, because I didn't know that something like that could even BE INCLUDED in a video game.

I never considered this matter about being straight, because there was absolutely nothing that could tell me that my PC was straight in all the games I played. There was no romance content at all.

Are there really that many games which imply that you are straight ?

Well, in early BioWare games, being straight was your only option when it came to romances.

And outside of RPGs, a lot of games have a mandatory heteromance tied into the main plot.

A lot of games (across all sorts of genres) do still have some sort of romantic interest.  Sometimes it's more implied (i.e. saving a Damsel in Distress is often seen as having romantic motivations, for example) than explicit, but I think it often falls into a heteronormative perspective.

There's no doubt games that are firmly asexual in their entire content, but sometimes it's just little things like having a girlfriend or whatnot.  It may not be prominent, but for example even an older game like Double Dragon has you playing the role of a heterosexual as you go chasing after the girl.

Another good example of current game series (well, two, actually) that have implied heterosexuality without much option are the Telltale Games series: The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us.  The series are very choice dependent and kind of tout themselves as highly interactive and story driven with numerous paths, so you might expect to see some options here.  However, in both, you are assigned particular protagonists that are straight males.  I get that an interactive story is a bit different than an RPG, but I would love to see them explore more variety in the protagonists.

In their defense, in The Walking Dead Season One, the protagonist is a black man (versus the typical white guy that I would expect to see) and in Season Two, the protagonist is a young black girl.  So it seems like they are at least trying on some diversity.  And in The Wolf Among Us, it's based off of a graphic novel, so that character was already set.  I'll be interested to see what they do with their new series set in the Borderlands and Game of Thrones universes.  Both have had implied same sex stories so it could be an opportunity to see some protags who aren't absolutely 100% straight with no options.

Game of Thrones should be interesting.

"Press 'A' to slaughter a family."

"Press 'B' to slaughter a family."

"Press 'X' to have graphic sex."

"Press 'Y' to be slaughtered with your family."

Wow, that's... wow.  I'm sure they did not consider that when they created it, but... maybe if you're going to include only one gay character in a work, don't give people the option of turning it into a hate crime. :/

I'm trying to think of a game that doesn't imply that you're straight.  Even Mario games assume that Mario has the hots for Peach.

Tetris is asexual in its content, as is pong, and bejewled.

Most games with a plot infer straightness by having a dead wife(so tired of this trope argh!) Saving women with hearts coming out of you occaisonally because you like her. Link, Pac man, Donkey Kong, Mario, Luigi, are just a few of the classics. Way too many modern games where you have to rescue your wife/girlfriend Kratos is straight. Even games, where you are saving your kid from a often not spoken of straight relationship.

Fall Out, Sims, Fable, and Skyrim do not assume you are straight. As they offer a range of LIs/flirts/wahooing. Almost all the others do.

All it takes is even an ex. And they are never a same sex...ex/dead (husband)wife/damsel(dude) in distress/boy(girl) friend/other parent

People are counting Juhani a lot. But that seems confusing because she has a crush but you cant return it and it ends. Been awhile since I played KotOR but I would count her as a Lesbian NPC rather than a romance.

Even without the inference, the assumption seems to be "straight until proven otherwise."

I am also very tired of the "dead wife," motivation. It's old and it's unoriginal. Also tired of "rescuing the damsel in distress," that has also been done to death.

Yeah, I agree that Juhani isn't really a full romance, but she is only available to female Revans and you express your interest back. I believe that she then says that you can discuss it after you deal with Malak. The only reason why I included her here is because she was the first openly gay companion that Bioware made. I think it's notable and, given that there was no male equivalent, it does speak to the company's tendency to prioritize f/f relationships over m/m ones.

I know, what happened to the days of Revenge because they did something bad to you personally? Put you in prison, killed your parents/best friend/ siblings, betrayed you for money. Almost killed you and left you for dead. Stole everything you had.

All are good revenge stories that require no heterosexuality or obligatory dead women falling out of the sky and your fridge everywhere you go.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, least of all straight men, but I would consider the murder of my spouse to be something bad that was done to me personally.
