I.E. Miranda, Jack, Samara, Ashley in ME3, etc. Or even Isabela in DA 2

A lot of people say the outfits they wear are unrealistic or oversexualized, and would only appeal to teenage boys or man-children.

Well, I'm neither of those things. (well maybe the latter depending on who you talk to :P)

I just like the designs and I readily admit I like the cleavage and ....erm other body shots and the fit. I like looking at the figures of them in general.

Also, I never get how Jacob's and Thane's outfits are never brought up as "unrealistic". I mean Jacob's is pretty skintight and doesn't leave much to the imagination, and Thane basically walks around bare-chested in a trench coat.

Would there even be such an uproar over oversexualization/objectification if there were more male fan service for female/gay fans?

Whether they are over sexualised in the context they are in.

Also, I don't see how you can compare this:

If it's wrong to like sexy female outfits on imaginary characters, then I don't want to be right.

Never really cared really about whether it fit the situation or not, I just like the look of the outfits. Also Jacob's outfit may not be comparable to Jack's, but his and Miranda are pretty similar.

Don't you know the video game rule?

Female armor is stronger the more skin is shown.

Jack is virtually unkillable.

Yes, lust is one of the seven deadly sins. Go find the nearest priest and give him all your money or your soul will be condemned to hell.

:P Not that kind of guilt. I often heard words like sexism, misogynistic, objectification, pandering, immature, man-children, etc when it comes to topics such as this.

Seeing as I have no problem with the outfits, (I actually like them and they add to my overall enjoyment of the games) am I part of the "problem" ?

I don't want to feel ashamed for liking the things I like, but seeing how discussions around topics like these go, it's hard not to feel a certain way.

The question I try to authentically answer is: would that character actually wear that? With Isabella that answer is a resounding, "Oh get real, of course not!" On a predominantly male pirate ship? In fairly lawless dive bars? Just utterly ridiculous.

Jack would do it just to be provocative and beat the crap out of people who get out of hand.

Miranda I can't tell. The outfit looks standard for a comic book which is what a good deal of ME2's design looks like, but in game it looks more designed by someone else to fetishize her body.

Jocob's outfit is practically the same as Miranda's, it just doesn't ride up his crevaces the same way. I'd probably accept Miranda's outfit more if it behaved in a similar way.

There's nothing to feel guilty about, you've committed no crime.

To each his own, I say.

Just to pick up on this - who knows? It's a moot point, as the portrayal of women in computer games is overwhelmingly done with a male gaze in mind.

How is it a moot point, just because you say so? I'd have no problem if there were more character designs like Zevran or Fenris that appeal to female fans.

No, because without any examples we do not know what the reaction will be. However, given the reaction of the wider internet over anything to do with a better portrayal of females in games (or the treatment of female gamers in general) I can imagine what the reaction would be - vitriloic attack, abuse and rape threats against the developers (which seems to be par for the course).

However, I will give Bioware this - at least Femsheps armour could actually function as it, which is refreshing.

I'd argue that Zevran's character was made with women in mind seeing as he was a man-****, and mostly remains one without the Warden making him work for legitimate relationship.

Yeah lets generalize most gamers as anti-social, unreasonable, women-hating losers. Yeah that totally helps discussion.

Yeah, I've noticed that Fenris and Zevran are pretty popular with female fans and I'm pretty certain they were designed that way. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I didn't generalise at all; what I said was that whenever these things are discussed that is the usual reaction.
Look what happened over the whole female tropes in gaming kickstarter.

But right now I'm gonna go with wrath  :P

But to answer the OP's question, there's nothing inherently wrong with liking the outfits.

But this series started out with characters (male and female) wearing combat hardsuits in battle and wearing sensible uniforms on the ship.  Then they started going with Rule of Sexy for their setting with no explanation whatsoever.

And fyi, I have brought up Jacob and Thane in the past  ;)

Fenris maybe makes sense cause of characterization to an extent, but seriously, Zevran is a man-**** that would sleep with anything on two legs he found interesting.

The games seem marketed for you then. Have a squee and call it a victory.

Like what? Other than a few crazies being giving too much attention? There are a minority of people like that in just about every other fandom, doesn't mean their views reflect everyone elses.

A lot of people might have disagreed with her views, but I assure you no one viciously attacked her other than some complete nutjobs.

Hmmm no wonder why I found ME1's character designs and outfits to be lacking. Most of them seemed so..... boring and generic.
