Nintendo has announced Code Name S.T.E.A.M. for 3DS, a new IP and game created by Intelligent Systems, the studio behind Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.

Revealed at a developer roundtable tonight, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. takes place in London during the Age of Steam, with a cartoony, steampunk art style. The turn-based strategy game — which also has action elements from shooters — is being showcased tonight by Hitoshi Yamagami of Nintendo, Intelligent Systems creative director Paul Patrashcu, and Intelligent Systems art director Takako Sakai.

President Abraham Lincoln started Code Name S.T.E.A.M. to defend and fight off enemies from outer space. According to Yamagami, he wants to “find a way to introduce more people to strategy games and have them fall in love with them," according to Nintendo.

The art style for Code Name S.T.E.A.M. was inspired by Silver Age American comic books, including works by artists Jack Kirby and Bruce Timm, Nintendo said. In addition, Sakai loves the work of comic book artist and writer Mike Mignola. Movement of characters is all controlled by the stylus.

Aliens built the ancient pyramids. Jews worked as slaves in Egypt to also build the pyramids (you know... different pyramids... not alien ones). Lincoln freed the slaves.

Ergo, Lincoln and aliens would never fight.

I'm interested to see what they can pull off with it.

Normally with procedural generation, it's great for generating large amounts of terrain but not so great at keeping things unique and interesting. You can vary a few things like adding trees or making it a different biome, but after a while it all starts feeling like the same area only with different textures. Anything that's really different or unique you have to go in afterwards and hand craft yourself.

The game does look quite promising, though. We've had this technology for at least two decades, so I would say we're overdue for some real advancements with it.

It's also the same people that make the Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars games.

So now you have a game... set in the 19th century... with comic book artstyle based off of Jack Kirby... where your controlling an agency made up by Abraham Lincoln... to fight aliens.

Why yes, I do think Nintendo is killing it.

I agree. Although if they have different rules about how the life is populated and forms depending on the parameters if the planet, it could be intriguing. Terrain can be generic if you assume similar composition and effects like gravity, but can be insanely complex if you add in different mineral composition types, presence of liquid oceans (of not just water, but also more exotic chemicals, like methane) and, of course, varying levels of gravity, atmospheric protection from incoming debris (or lack thereof) and suddenly things can be wildly different. If you do similar tweaks with the confines of biology and sentience, THAT would be truly a sight to see.

The cel-shaded steampunk game will launch next year for Nintendo 3DS. STEAM is in development with Intelligent Systems and is being headed by Hitoshi Yamagami, whose previous works include Xenoblade Chronicles and the Fire Emblem and Pokemon series.

Also, here's the box art:

Chaos Theory > Conviction = Splinter Cell > Pandora Tomorrow >> Double Agent >>>>>>>> The entire MSG series >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Blacklist

Well, the Gamecube had a really good controller and PS2 could play DVDs out of the box, so boom.

We win either way.

If it counts for anything, I've had a 360 for years(still play it) and have an Xbox One now, so yay?

Yay as long as it's a good console. Besides, the 360 was released after the Invasion of Iraq. :D

Also, I like how the new Zelda game, which is on a console that's often decried as a system that's inferior to the PS4 and Xbox One, looks so much better than anything else shown at E3 this year:

Nintendo does great work with their own franchises, but it wouldn't hurt to start bringing in some 3rd party developers.

They ARE good consoles! (Yuss!)

And while I won't get a Wii U, that open world Zelda title does look awesome.

This is why there were no Windows PC games at E3 2014

This is what Phil Spencer had to say on the subject of PC games:

E3′s a retail show. It’s a retail show, it’s a console show, so it didn’t really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows, but Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft’s success.

It gets better:

For us, E3 is a console show and an Xbox show, and for us as Microsoft, Xbox is our gaming brand, and it’s the thing we can fill an arena like this, we get millions of people to watch us on TV and we show our games and it’s a brand that people care about.

I've never heard a more pathetic excuse in my life. Just say you don't give a s*** about PC games. At least that would be honest.

I get what he's saying though. Sony's gonna be showing off PS4 games pretty much exclusively, right? Well, if Microsoft doesn't do the same for Xbox One games and focuses just as much on PCs, it doesn't really do their console market any favors.

If anything, what there could be is a PC specific section of E3 just for that platform. Thats what I'd ask for.

If they were smart, MS would be working on better ways to integrate their PC and XB1 game experiences. Own a game on one platform, have functionality or features on the other, etc. Use the same underlying system architecture to leverage better gaming across console and PC, not just sweep PC gaming under the rug.

Here's a Kotaku article on the future of 2D and 3D Metroid games.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo: The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you'll have to ask him.

Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo: So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them.

Miyamoto: I have the New Super Mario Bros. series [for 2D], so I like Prime. I think there's still a lot of new things that could be done with the Prime series.
