It is funny to me that the assumption from the trailers we've seen is that the Inquisitor being used is straight. Is it because he isn't actively kissing a dude? As if that's the bar and he can't be gay without them showing him kissing a dude? How do you know they aren’t giving you what you want and marketing a gay Inquisitor, just you know, most actual gay people look just like straight people in most context outside of a bedroom with a partner? And the statistics of the general population have a figure of about 1 in 10 people are gay. So Bioware is already over representing the gay population in the game if more than one of the 12 people (9 companions and 3 advisors) close to the Inquisitor are gay. Not that I’m saying they shouldn’t have the options for a gay Inquisitor to have several romance options, just saying let’s keep it real here. Bioware is way above most companies when it comes to representing diverse people groups.
The Inquisitor, by the way, looks way more southern European, as in from Italy or the south of Spain, than “white” which would be Anglo, English, Irish, Welsh or French. To keep it in DA universe, he looks more Antivain or Rivaini than he does Fereldan or Orlisian. It actually make me a little angry that all “white” people get grouped together, we do it to the Asian and Spanish (I can’t count the time I’ve heard someone who is Cuban, Spanish, Brazilian, or Honduran get called Mexican by an ignorant person) people too. Why don’t we all just call each other people? Why don’t we stop saying, “you need to rep more minorities,” because we are all human and regardless of skin color are the same in our core, so how about we just stop? We can discuss showing the other races, like elf or whatnot, or even representing women but to get up in arms because he is “white,” is just ridiculous.
Also, it isn't just marketing to a single group to use a single figure (whatever that figure may be), it is also about having unity in what you show. The BSN is a minority in the gaming industry, out of all my gamer friends, all of whom are fans of Bioware’s games and are super excited for DA:I – I am the only one on the BSN and actively keeping up with DA news. Most people don't go looking for a bunch of info about a game, they just want a cool trailer, and so showing a bunch of different Inquisitors would just confuse the average game buyer. Telling a marketing expert, like the ones Bioware no doubt hirers how to do their job is like telling your doctor how to treat you, leave it to them, they went to school for it and get paid money because they know what they are doing. Marketing isn’t a place to make a big political statement about equality and freedom, it’s where the company shows off the game they are trying to make money with. They have maybe two minutes per trailer, they are trying to show the games action and graphics, not start a revolution with their game.
