Unless there's a massive shift in demographics, this will change at a glacial pace. Maybe never at all. Canada is approximately 86% white, and the United States is approximately 72% white. Advertising to the late teen-late to twenties (mature game after all in the US) white person is quite understandable. What makes this trickier is that that game is only interesting to a specific cohort that enjoys/tolerates medieval European influenced fare. It's a very white/euro-centric genre to begin with. It is not a genre that is particularly popular to the main demographic, let alone the average gaming ethnic minority. The game probably looks like it is "White Straight Male Wizard Simulator 2014" to any casual gamer or outsider.

I have no illusions about how nerdy and niche this game may be. Mass Effect 3's military theme at least could draw in some casual FPS fan, and then smack them with a narrative driven space opera. I hope this game will sell as well as Skyrim did. Perhaps they can tap into the current Game of Thrones craze. Hopefully it can interest a wider audience of like minded under represented individuals with a trailer for the CC suite. Nothing would make me happier as a nerdy RPG fan than there being more RPG fans.

Yeah, he's a dick, that one.  I didn't know that he wrote a Dragon Age comic.  That makes me a bit upset actually.

At best, BioWare is incredibly ignorant. Most likely, it's simply thoughtless.

 

At worst, they actively tricked LGBT gamers into indirectly giving their money to an individual who seeks to deny them equality.

A lot of Japanese games starring white people though like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Siren Blood Curse, Final Fantasy, Lost Planets, Devil May Cry, etc. 

 Yeah, always found that odd... Still, do they have people complaing that there movies don't have enough positive roles for black/native america/ect in them? My point is I don't see why movies made by white people are always catching compants about lack of minoritys. I doubt anyone compains about a middle eastern movie featuring zero whites in it.

 

I also feel like if I complain about Nick Furry being black, there are a hell of a lot of people who are going to go off about me being a raciest and how there needs to be more minority roles in stories and characters created by white people. Yet, if I complain about Goku being white for no reason I'll get congrats from these same people.

 

It bugs the hell outta me to see "Another typical white male" in regaurds to a fantasy game made by white people, yet I never see "another typical black rapper".

72 ronins based on a Japanese story but staring a half white guy who look like a white guy being discriminated for being white. The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise. The Last Airbender has a bunch white white kids in an Asian culture. Yeah, Hollywood has an obsession with Asian culture... played by white folks.

I've never seen where he said he didn't feel this way anymore. All I ever saw is that he gave a vague statement about how LGBT activists won when DOMA got shot down, so we shouldn't hold his bigotry against him now that it's supposedly irrelevant.

Wasn't this mostly because of all the heat the Ender's Game movie was getting? I know many LGBT people were not satisfied that he had changed his views and planned to vote with their wallets by not seeing the film, even people who had read and loved the book as kids.

And? Why can't I sit down and say, "hey guys, please be careful and think about what you do because even if you don't intend to make all your characters the "default white" and forget about other ethnicities, you still do it sometimes"?

 

Surely it isn't so much of a stretch to simply ask if it's possible for game developers (and other people in media!) to consciously make sure they aren't accidentally falling into the same old default white dude protag syndrome.

 

But why shouldn't they make white protags? If its what they can relate to best and it sells why not. I wouldn't go to another culture and complain about there being a lack of white protags.

Whether or not marketing is respectful is something that has to be determined on a case by case basis.

 

Acknowledging the existence of homosexuals and giving them content they can enjoy is absolutely more respectful than what other game companies give the LGBT audience; a piping hot slice of nothing at all, with a side of "you're a minority so you don't matter".

I'm not saying you're saying it. I mean, I never saw where he said he didn't agree with it anymore. The only quote I ever saw from him was basically just, "you guys already won, so let it go and don't boycott my movie pls". Unless there's something else on record that I'm unaware of.
