Just have Cumberbatch or either of the actors that play Sam and Dean on Supernatural voice the male protagonist and Tumblr will be appeased for years to come.

For some of tumblr, maybe. But I guarantee you that there's just as many people on tumblr who couldn't give two hecks about whatshisname and go right on pointing out problematic junk in the things they love in hopes that they can help make it better for everyone.

Despite what some people may have told you, tumblr isn't a hivemind, lmao.

Are you german? I'm sorry if I offended you if so. The only reason I mentioned the country is for the comparison

No, I'm not. Still doesn't mean you should bring it up

Riiiiight, because no one gives macklemore and eminem any recognition. and who the hell cares what the japanese do? Just because germany was killing jews it doesn't make it ok for you to do it

And I can come up with two black protags in a second just like you could come up with two white rappers. Point being noone compalins about Rap being mostly black. The point about the japanese is that I wouldn't go there and complain that all the movies are staring asian people, yet people are doing that in a predominantly white country.

Point being I don't see how its a problem that a predominantly white country has predominantly white characters

Yeah, always found that odd... Still, do they have people complaing that there movies don't have enough positive roles for black/native america/ect in them? My point is I don't see why movies made by white people are always catching compants about lack of minoritys. I doubt anyone compains about a middle eastern movie featuring zero whites in it.

I also feel like if I complain about Nick Furry being black, there are a hell of a lot of people who are going to go off about me being a raciest and how there needs to be more minority roles in stories and characters created by white people. Yet, if I complain about Goku being white for no reason I'll get congrats from these same people.

It bugs the hell outta me to see "Another typical white male" in regaurds to a fantasy game made by white people, yet I never see "another typical black rapper".

The issue with Nick Fury is that the movie was made by white people who see it as a novelty. They want to make a statement with it. Like I said, it's "cute". They wouldn't dare to make Superman Asian or Spiderman Black because they know that there would be more backlash since those characters are leading characters, but it's perfectly acceptable for Hollywood to change leading roles of Asian characters into white. Plus, the leading roles in those films you mention are all white. They wouldn't dare to change Captain America to a black guy. I double dare them to do it. Goku is a leading role. It's the intention behind it is what matter. They change it because they perceive Asians as undesirable. They keep other characters Asian because those roles aren't as important. That's how "cute" I find the casting is. If they want to change Goku to a white person because of some other reasons beside subtle racism then I wouldn't mind at all. The change in casting roles that motivate by anything other than racism should be okay with me, to be honest.

well in that case I can if I want. It's just something that happened in history and nothing is meant of it more than an example.

what are you talking about?

Orson Scott Card wrote a comic for Dragon Age.

Point being I don't see how its a problem that a predominantly white country has predominantly white characters

And expanding the marketing material in Dragon Age would not change that at all. A white male lead has already been shown, and even if it hadn't, one game without that lead would hardly dilute the marketplace that significantly.

I respond to all of you with an overwhelming "MEH". If bioware switches up the trailers to have every combo under the sun shown, then go for it. But none of this kissing/romancing crap in the trailers. I don't want to see ads for a medieval dating sim, I want to see the protagonists kicking ass, taking names, and looking good while doing so.

LOL!

6_isthisakissingbook.jpg

I'm sorry, but paying money to play a game just because it has "gay content" is ridiculous to me. It's so shallow. You may as well just pay for porn instead of video games. I'm a bisexual, biracial man but I don't give two ****s about bisexual content in games that I would otherwise not play or marketing materials featuring biracial PCs.

How others spend their money is not your problem.

But why shouldn't they make white protags? If its what they can relate to best and it sells why not. I wouldn't go to another culture and complain about there being a lack of white protags.

I've just skimmed these past few pages so I'm not sure in what context this quote is, but if applied to Dragon Age I've got this to say:

Making white protags is fine, what isn't fine is when that's all there is. This is because we are becoming a more and more increasingly diverse world. In fact white people are the minority, when the entire population of the planet is considered.

I don't think comparing "us" (whoever "we" collectively are) to other cultures is very useful in this respect. For instance, I can point out how sexist and racist Korea is (and I can because I've lived there for a couple years), but their problems do not excuse our problems, if you know what I mean. We should always strive to be better than what we are, no matter what someone else is doing in some other faraway land.

So just because the Dragon Age Korean equivalent has no interest in showing non-Koreans in their trailers (which would make sense for them because there are verrryyyyy few people of other ethnicities in that country), doesn't mean North America should stop trying to branch out.

(Aaaand this post may or may not have made sense. :P )

Cumberbatch cures all. He's like Chuck Norris, except for da ladiessss.

(Please don't mind me.)

Don't even get me started on anime characters being coded as white by people outside of Asia  <_< Do you know how many times I saw people say with absolute certainty that Sailor Moon was a white girl? By people who watched the SUBS, not the dubbed version, nonetheless! NAH SON SHE'S JAPANESE

In their defense, most characters' names were change to American name in most anime like there's anything wrong with Japanese names in the first place. Is it to make Middle Americans feel more comfortable? We'll get back to you at 11.

I'm not saying you're saying it. I mean, I never saw where he said he didn't agree with it anymore. The only quote I ever saw from him was basically just, "you guys already won, so let it go and don't boycott my movie pls". Unless there's something else on record that I'm unaware of.

Sadly, I've only heard from secondhand sources, so I have no links to give you. :(

Probably because half the cast is some variation of pink or alabaster skin tone, blue eyed, light brown or blonde haired. Recessive traits found in Caucasians, and when pink hair and green hair showed up it was just a whacky cartoon. Personal anecdote, as a child I always wondered why Goku became a white, blond haired and blue eyed übermensch when he went super. Made no sense to me.

Its not racism I think(hope) its marketing being a bunch of backwards jackasses that think the public is racist. I think(really hope) the majority of the public would rather Goku be asian.

Rap is just one section of the popular music industry, which as a whole is overwhelmingly white.

I don't know if Canada is predominantly white, but in the United States, where most video game developers are based, people of colour make up close to 50% of the population, if they haven't exceeded that. (I can't find any current statistics).

You ignored how it should be expeced that the white male company put outs white male protag defaults.

Except not everyone at BioWare is white or male...Not everyone in North America is white, not even close and more than half the population is female.

I'm gonna stop you right here. I'm sure you don't intend for this to be insulting, but... It is. Things like "we all bleed red! We're all human!" actually dismisses the differences we have as human beings. We should be CELEBRATING was makes each of us unique, and saying "We're all the same in the end," is the opposite of that. So please, do not say this like this because it is racist* and can even go as far as downplay or even erase the impact a persons culture had on them as a person.

*I am not trying to call you a bad person, or that YOU are a racist, but that the phrase is.

I didn’t mean to offend. My point, which I thought my post as a whole made clear - sorry that it didn’t - was that race (as in color) is the least differentiating quality a person has, a person is not their color, but the sum of the events of their life (true, because some people are stupid and judge others by their color those actions shape a person and that should not be downplayed). I am near equal parts Native American, African American (as in actually descended from slaves from Africa), Scottish, German, English, and French and I am fair skinned. You’d never be able to tell from looking at me that half of my heritage has been the subject of mass genocide, slavery and oppression for generations in the past by the other half of my ancestors.

I was simply saying, let’s move past color, and judge people as they are, all different yes, but because of who they are, not what they are... I hope this is a little clearer, and I know it is idealistic, I mean, asking people to stop judging others based on the color of their skin?! It’ll never happen, there will always be bigots and racists, but those of us who aren’t should just ignore skin color, judge a person by their character, not there color of creed.

Do you remember a time when women couldn't vote, and certain people weren't allowed on golf courses?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Except those issues have nothing to do with gaming. We're talking about marketing, it should focus on the game rather than social justice which should be reserved for the real world politics.

I have always, always been curious about why all these anime characters look so Western... I mean when I was a kid I didn't think Sailor Moon with her yellow hair and big blue eyes was anything but.

2010 census has it at 72.4% white on wiki. It's almost 3/4 white folks in the US.

Ah, good point. But there are still folks who even after they figure out that Serena isn't Sailor Moon's real name are still convinced she's white. boooooo

AFAIK, the rainbow hair that's common in anime is to help distinguish the characters more easily where it would normally be "varying shades of black and dark brown." But as I am not Japanese, I can't say for sure. (Also, it makes it easier to figure out who the important characters are if they're the only one with pink hair and red eyes in a highschool classroom full of brown-haired kids).

I couldn't tell you why Goku turned blond, though. I don't watch Dragonball. :P

Isn't he a member of the LDS?

I mean, BioWare is widely known for their same-sex representation, I imagine that would be bittersweet for him.
