I was wondering.....i've recently played as a mage trough dragon age origins, and at the end, i had as outcome that Cullen went crazy and killed people and therefore had to be killed.....My question is: how is it possible that someone who did something like this becomes a captain (da 2) and a member of inquisition (da: i)? Also, why isn't he dead, since origin endgame said that he was killed? I think it's really weird

This is one of those peculiar scenarios that isn't accounted for well, like Anders or Leliana dying.
I think the one that makes the most sense (to me anyways) is siding with Templars. Then Gregoir gets kind of nervous around Cullen's hardcore beliefs, and thinks he'd be better in Kirkwall. Then Gregoir retires himself and can't stand the job anymore.

I don't ever remember reading the epilogue cards that way. Here's what it says if you chose to give the Circle of magi their independence, “The young templar Cullen never quite recovered from his ordeal. After months of attempting to convince his superiors that the tower was still a danger, he finally snapped and killed three apprentices before being stopped by his fellow templars. Eventually, Cullen escaped from prison, a madman and a threat to any mage he encountered.”
The only time he could be killed was removed from the game. Their is a mod that allows the script (that was removed) to play out where the GW can kill all of the Mages (including Wynne, it is unavoidable) and Templars right at the end of the Broken Circle quest.

I saw that. In another post I was told that ending was not canon. You hear that it was just a rumor and he didn't do it. I haven't played DA2 for a long time. I was told you can find out it was just a rumor.

Just to add, I think the DA2 Codex on Cullen lines up with my ending. It's really just the epilogue where kills mages that it comes off like a crazy "rumor". Sometimes epilogues are close to the truth. And I guess, sometimes they are not. It's all very arbitrary.

Tower Templar to Denerim Templar: Ser Cullen was reassigned to Kirkwall. And a good thing, too. I swear, he's about ready to snap and slice the head off an apprentice for looking at him wrong.
Denerim Templar, after a few beers: You hear? They thought Ser Cullen was about to go all kill-crazy on the mages, so they made him Kirkwall's problem.
People in the tavern who heard Denerim Templar: Ser Cullen killed a bunch of mages and was sent away to the Gallows!
People a step removed from that: Hear about the mad templar? He snapped during the Blight and started killing mages. They locked him up, but I heard a storyteller say he's escaped, prowling the dark places of Thedas, hunting apostates. Or people he thinks are apostates. Creepy, huh?
Ser Cullen: Knight Commander Meredith is much more strict than Ser Greagoir. The sort of things that happened in Ferelden will never happen here. Phew. What a relief.

The epilogue slides were downgraded to "rumors and hearsay" after they decided to extend the franchise. This is one of those cases where it might make sense.

lol.. Reminds of that the bartender going on about the rumor that Maric has a lost son. Which leads to him being locked in the basement of the castle. To him thinking he might be a mage.. to them keeping him happy by feeding him cake.

Ah, well, i don't remember perfectly the ending slide, i just might have imagined that he was killed...

I do remember reading about Cullen went crazy and killed some mages. I can't remember what origin I was playing. I would have read it as "gallows", being hanged, but that was before I realized the Gallows is a place in Kirkwall???

I remember it in the female mage story when I asked for the mages to be set free.

IIRC, these killings did not happen anyway, as was it was mentioned in DA2.

That's exactly it. Even if the mages are saved, the king or queen offers the GW a choice of boons at the post-coronation ceremony for saving Ferelden; one of the boons is freeing the mages. Choose anything else, even if you save the Circle of Magi, and that epilogue is not seen.

What a waste of a boon. Likely, it never happens. And you get a false Cullen report too ![]()

True. It is still in the list of boon request but it is not canon.

I think people really overrate the epilogue slides. They're just not that important.
As for Cullen, he was never one of my favorites. I always favored the mages though.

yea, the only time I got the "Cullen goes whackadoo" card was on my female Surana who did the US (and the default boon I think was more freedom for the mages). Maybe it requires the boon to activate?
Regardless, the end slides are a mass of misfiring plot flags and errors. The most annoying one for me was the one that said my "Warden remained in Denerim much to Queen Anora's annoyance" or something along those lines, though my girl was solo ruler, King Alistair's mistress or Queen Cousland. That damn card popped up EVERY time I left him on the throne till I installed Cmessaz's IRS Alistair mod.
