What if Isabela and Duncan are just black (as in skin colour, not race)? There are other ethnicities that have very dark skin, like some people from south India.

but they are not Black people, they are Indian people. You don't look at a dark skinned Pakistani man and go "Oh, you're dark skinned, you Black, bruh?"

You can say dark skinned, but if you say Black you mean Black people. That's what Gaider meant, so Gaider is mistaken.

C'mon, I really don't see your point. There are people in real life that look just like Duncan and Isabela, so they are very much real. Whether you want to consider them black or not has nothing to do with it.

Also, I notice you completely ignored my posts, so I will repeat myself: PLEASE, drop it.

those people ain't black... Weaves and chemicals are not natural...what posts, i didn't see them

white-wash ... what it does is unbelievable

I might agree with you if it weren't for the fact that you're going beyond the white-washing of Black persons and into the territory of actually saying that people who DO identify as Black aren't actually black at all, and that is where you lose all credibility.

They might not refer to themselves as black, but their skin colour is black. That's what I meant by colour, not race.

Also this is going away off topic, so please drop it.

Actually, I do. That's my point. I determine whether a person is white or black based solely on whether they have light or dark skin.

My point is, they're not meant to be African-like. They're not "fake". They just don't fall under your definition of black. And I'm saying that arguing semantics is not important.

When did I ever claim to speak for anyone other than myself?

You're the one that is saying that realism and immersion are "OMG SO NECESSARY" for fantasy, or else nobody will enjoy them.

You're the one saying that Game of Thrones is popular because "people totes relate to it". How do you know they don't just want to see ******?

If anyone is claiming to speak for a vast majority, it is totally you.

When you said "the vast majority"

I said it is necessary for certain audiences and players, not all. I said that because you outright said that it isnt needed by the "vast majority"

Because thats what fans say, im speaking for the audience because this has been said multiple times, im not winging this for the sake of being right

You're clearly beginning to get upset because immaturity is starting to slip into your responses, would you like to end the conversation?

It's kind of sad that when I make an argument about the books people automatically start referring to the show for their counterargument

ok, but the are ruled over by arabs

That doesnt conclude that there arent a lot of black individuals living in the Middle east. Thats like saying no chinese americans live in America because whites outnumber them

I'm not following you here. I wasn't talking about any story being derivative.

No, but everybody else is.

Let me summarise:

People in this thread are critical of individual stories that feature all-white or mostly-white casts.

The reason people are critical of these individual stories is because there are so many all-white/mostly-white stories already.

You do need more than just an identity in order to be something.

I mean, I have snow-white skin, red beard and my long, flowing hair was very blonde for the first years of my life ; then it darkened. Even if I were to suddenly claim to identify as a black person, I wouldn't actually be one.

Then I'm afraid I don't understand your point, since I never mentioned anything about a given story on an individual basis.  You've lost me.

My point was more specifically about the example of Dragon Age in particular. I like diversity in fantasy stories, but it seemed like the demand for diversity carried with in the implication that if Bioware doesn't add significant dark skinned populations to Orlais and Ferelden and so forth, then they're doing something wrong.

But there's no real reason for them not to have a diverse cast since they're the authors of the world; this is what leads to all of the unfortunate implications.

A story isn't derivative of another solely on the basis of having a cast of the same color.

You go enjoy that conversation with paint :)

In my experience, people who only watch a TV show to get a look at free porn are unlikely to read a very long series of extremely thick books to just get an occasional description of a similar scene.

There we go.

Indians are black in skin... only...

They are Caucasians (white people. Surprised?). But they are more than that, they are are Indians. Lots of people have dark skin too, but they are not even related.

Don't lump dark skinned people together, and start calling they black people, its wrong.

I am willing to accept the dismissal of the idea of black people in Thedas, if it is to get rid of racism, and that false sense of diversity that I have to put up with. Duncan looks something other than black, so does Isabella, and I doubt she's wearing a weave.

Exactly. If Bioware could make sexuality a non issue in order to be more inclusive, why couldn't they make Thedas more ethnically diverse as well?

So, there is a different way of interpreting your post as anything but "If someone identifies as something, then s/he is that something regardless of anything else"?

Stop calling Indians, and Arabs/Persians/Native Australians black people.

They are Caucasian. All of them.
