I kinda thought that Vendetta was only programmed not to reveal the citadel being the catalyst until the crucible was built. When the archive is activated Vendetta just appears, without knowing the reason it was summoned. Its first words were (something like), "reaper presence detected. this cycle has reached its extinction terminus. systems shutting down." and then shep tells it to wait, that they need to know about the catalyst.

Javik says that with the temple being thousands of years old there was time enough for the asari to make "serious progress" -- meaning knowledge in general. The asari could have been interacting with vendetta on a limited scale for a long time.

EDIT: On second thought, I just contradicted myself. Never mind.  :P

But the statue crumbles when the archive is activated. This implied that the statue was built over the archive a very long time ago and that the asari stopped interacting with it.

Well the temple is thousands of years old, the statue could have been built mere hundreds of years ago and still crumbled, and I dunno if it crumbled because of age or broke apart from the archive activation.

Shepard: The cruel and unfortunate truth is, while the Reapers focus on harvesting the asari, the rest of us can regroup.

Tevos: Commander...

Shepard: There's nothing further to say, Councilor. I don't know when you knew about this beacon, but Earth put out the call for Prothean tech to help with the Crucible since I came here from Mars. That was months ago. We asked High Command and they gave us nothing. They just wanted to sit on their racial secret and pretend as if the asari were above such mundane concerns as a galactic war. Yeah, I wasn't expecting Kai Leng to get the data, but if your people had stopped sitting on the sidelines and cared more about the survival of the other species than just the asari, then we wouldn't be in this mess. Don't complain to me about your people, apologize to them. Beg for forgiveness from the asari, and everyone else dying now because your people cared more about your image than saving this damn galaxy!

(Shepard then goes to chat with his shipmates without brooding)

As for why Shepard cared more about the asari than everyone else, there's only one explanation: The writers thought everyone would care about the asari because breasts.

Tevos: I never thought this day would come.

Shepard: Why didn't you?

Tevos: Commander?

Shepard: I tell you Saren is a traitor and you ignore me. I tell you that Saren will lead the Geth in an attack on the Citadel and you try to ground me and my ship. I warn you about the Reapers and you dismiss me as being delusional. That Sovereign was just a new Geth ship. I tell you the collectors are being controlled by the Reapers to attack our colonies and are a threat to us all and you do nothing. I tell you that countless Reapers in dark space are going to come flooding through our galaxy and we stand no chance against them and you do nothing. I've been telling you this day was coming for years!... did you think I was JOKING!!

Our worlds are burning because of your inaction. And now what? You want my pity? Sorry sister. I'm fresh out. *end call*
