Now we just need some high level Earth magic spells worthy of a character like Toph.
Will my Dalish actually believe in the Creators?

We've had them in previous games, like DA2's Rock Armor or the Earthquake. And definitely Stone Fist.

I kind of hope there's the option to politely disagree with the Chantry religion. It seemed like most of the time in Origins, your only two options were to completely embrace the Maker or to angrily sh-t on anyone who believes in the Maker. Call me weak, but I'd love to be able to play a Dalish who believes in the Creators but doesn't care if someone else doesn't.
Well, Dalish Elves and Dwarves kind of had that option when talking to the Priest offering blessings to the soldiers in Ostagar. I was actually very happy with how I had that conversation turn out.
I don't know why some people have this idea that Dalish must be a less diverse group of people than city elves. You find rule breakers in just about every culture. Even the Qunari. Why wouldn't a Dalish elf possibly know how to build traps?

Well, as long as they give me a variety of Earth magic spells I'll make do. Just spec the crud out of them instead of getting other spells ![]()

I wonder if we get nature spells this time around...could technically become a waterbender.

We've had multiple examples of non-conforming Dalish. Even the Dalish Warden's Keeper father promoted reaching out to human society.
But yeah, I'd like my Dalish Quizzy to believe in the Creators and use elven lingo. I do wonder if he'll keep his beliefs by the time everything is said and done, but I don't see him jettisoning his entire culture.

Having Air, Water, Earth, Fire, and Lightning spells would be fun.

It really fits too since as a Mage, they'd be restricted from doing pretty much everything since they are being trained to be a Keeper as shown when Merrill talks about it.
I thought that not every mage in the clan necessarily had to go this route. There was the Keeper and the next best mage became the First but there could be others that didn't cut it. I think it works that way in theory, but in practice there aren't that many with magical ability so we've typically seen only two mages in a Clan, the Keeper and the First.
I'm betting the mage Dalish Inquisitor will be a First as part of their background before the Clan likely gets killed off with you as the only survivor.
I was going to go with a non-mage Dalish...one that resents how mages are automatically made the leaders of the clan...cuz magic.

We've only ever seen Keepers and Firsts, so hard to say.
Yeah, I bet we'll be a First if you choose Elf Mage.
So they think more it should be the most qualified person to lead them, not just the most qualified mage? That sounds interesting.

Actually the clan Elders are the leaders of the clan and can pull rank on the Keeper.

Hold up, I had thought that if you showed signs of magic, you were sent to become the First of another clan in need, if you weren't chosen to be your own clan's First.

That happened to Merrill, so probably.

Oh I always got the impression the Keeper had the final say. I could be missing a Codex entry.
IIRC from DA2, Merrill's clan very much wanted to leave Kirkwall but Marethari was like, 'nope'.

Possibly, yes. That never made sense as I got the impression that the different clans didn't communicate that much with each other.
You could also have a situation where there are more mages than needed. I'm just kind of guessing here.

The Dalish follow the Sith principal of there only being two: a Master(Keeper) and an Apprentice(First). ![]()

The Keeper has a lot of influence, and they may have more power in some clans than others, as Dalish clans vary a lot. But it's pretty straightforward, especially if you've played the Dalish Origin. Marethari explains herself that the Keeper isn't the same as a ruler, they act more as lorekeeper and advisor. It may be that the clan stayed where they were in DA2 because Marethari didn't want to go, but that may have been because the Elders didn't want to force it.
The Dalish Warden's father for example, was the previous Keeper of the same clan, and he wasn't allowed to marry who he wanted because the clan elders forbid it. And more recently in The Masked Empire, we had a very different clan and the Keeper still had to defer to the clan elders, since they made the big decisions.

Mmm, I mainly was thinking about backstory. Merrill was a rule breaker, went against traditions, everything. As a player character, you can craft your character to what you want, but your Origin is already set in stone and they said we won't be able to play it. We don't know if we even get the choice for our character to be born in the city then decided to join the Dalish, but City elf can come from anywhere and everywhere. Even Surana can choose if she was born in an alienage or not. I'm still gonna headcanon my Inquisitor (she is gonna be Dalish) to be somewhere from a city but we don't know how much we can customize where our Dalish comes from and was raised, you know?

Merrill never really broke any rules of the Dalish unless you romance her. She was just disobeying her Keeper's wishes but still following her mandate as a First.
But yeah, hopefully they leave the backstories vague enough for people to have their own ideas.

I personally want it to go the other way as well. I'd like to see a Dalish Inquisitor have the chance to see things from an Andrastian point of view. A man/woman who sees the flaws of her own religion, and the positives of another. Same with a Dwarf Inquisitor.

I think they definitely would know how to build traps. I assume they use traps to hunt animals.
The Artificer spec for a rogue seems more complex than that (hopefully) and I'm curious how a Dalish Elf would acquire the background.
I guess it's not impossible.

Well, specializations happen after you are the Inquisitor so the backstory doesn't really matter.

Maybe they come from a clan that does a lot of trade with dwarves. The Dalish Inquisitor's clan would apparently travel close to Orzammar if they happen to be going through the northern Frostbacks...

That's right. I guess she can pick it up. She always like making traps and fixing the aravels...it's the logical step forward.

You're probably right. I don't know why I got the impression that the Keeper had the final say. But like you said, it also probably varies between clans.

If zathrian sacrifices his life lanaya becomes a very progressive keeper that even other clan go to for counsel on how to deal with humans.
Zathrian remains a xenophobe.
