and this will probably be marked as spam and the thread locked.
But I was sick of Haiti controlling all my news sources for the last week or so and now all broadcast channels, PBS, and all the cable news networks are Haiti.
Seriously? All those channels?
Guess its no tv for me at all tonight. And I was looking forward to a few shows.

1) Baby elephant is born at Melbourne zoo, followed by plug for documentary on same channel.
2) Competition announced for the naming of said baby
2) The visit by Prince William, pictures of much hand-shaking.
3) Hoon drivers will get there cars impounded, pictures of cars being crushed
4) Danni Minogue speaks about expecting her first baby
5) Miracle child being pulled from the rubble in Haiti - reporter gets in the way, asking dumb questions
6) An update on the real disaster in Haiti, very brief
7) Sport and weather
I usually watch news on government channels, and have only been seeing this because the Australian open is on a commercial channel, and the channel has been left on. I can't help wondering if such priorities truly reflect those of mainstream Australia, and this can depress me far more than a news program focusing on tragedies.
EDIT: "leave me alone i dont care about haiti"
That is a sad example of how some people just don't care about the suffering of human beings outside their own "tribe". I just hope that any who agree with it don't feel the other other side of that statement should they happen to fall on hard times, even though it would be justice perhaps.

EDIT: Also, to be fair, this is the biggest disaster since 9/11, bigger than the tsunami. And we couldnt get away from news coverage of 9/11. Let it be their turn. Yes its annoying but pay respect I suppose.

You have heard of telethons, right? That's what this is. You're not missing any shows, they're just pushed back a week. If you don't want to watch, read a book.Livemmo wrote...

I fail to see the purpose of these telathons. Honestly, I want to meet the guy thats sitting in his house with the telathon on every tv bashing his head off the wall in anger because he cant get through to donate. I do want to meet this person.
"look honey they pushed back all our tv shows that we pay for but will never be compensated for so we can donate money to haiti

1st, they are not a minority if they're the main group of the country.
2nd, I wouldn't care more if it was a country with white people. Sadly i can't help either of them. I usually feel more sympathy for people in poor nations or poor areas of a nation though. The rich can fend for themselves.

I'm not. Go read the comments at the Fox News website. A bunch of white conservatives saying they don't deserve help because dark skinned people are helpless idiots.

Huh. And here I was in the belief that helping Haitians shouldn't be done because it's a case of modern Darwinism.
But I guess if people just want to be racist for the sake of being racist, that's... Terrible.

Also, I don't like your implication that all conservatives are racist. It isn't true. Racism and political ideology are two completely different things. There are plenty of liberal racists as well.

If I may go back to my previous post where I mention the "tribe" mentality. This concept includes myriad factors. The following are some off the top of my head, and are in no particular order: political ideology, socio-economic status, language, religion, race, geographical distance, shared history, and there are many more of course. In a basic way this can explain the different levels of empathy/sympathy we feel when tragedy befalls our family, our friends, town, state, nation etc.
Btw for a fantasy equivalent, I would recommend a political reading of David Edding's, a writer whose work, I personally find distasteful. Sure, race (and the other factors) nearly always figures in fantasy settings, but eddings takes it to a lvl approaching fascism imo.
Anyway, the more boxes that are ticked, which is a horrible way of looking at it I know, the more coverage a certain disaster gets in the media, and the more sympathy that is potentially garnered. Added to this is the degree/amount of "sensational" imagery available to the media. Call me cynical (I prefer skeptical tho lol), but I am convinced that commercial TV channels are just as concerned about their ratings as their responsibility to inform the public.
Also, many sociologists have talked about de-sensitisation to such disasters due to the amount of media coverage we are confronted by nowadays.
I'm not arguing that any of this is either unnatural or immoral exactly, and such tribalism is steadily being eroded by globalisation (which brings other problems perhaps). However, I think it's always worthwhile examining the reasons behind the way we think, act and feel when confronted with humanitarian disasters such as this.
P.S. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Firefox which automatically saved my post after a micro-power-outage

It's the only cartoon I get since I lost Teletoon and whatever YTV is called these days. No Spangebab OR Recess.
They're ruining kids lives by taking these off and showing bloody, dirty, mangled and maimed Haitians. I don't like how the secret cabal of Jewish people controlling the media is executing their power to run their fascist help for Haiti regime. This is just ridiculous.
