In general I play UUG or UUP, and I've noticed that certain maps are rarely played on platinum. I've completed Map Mastery a number of times, and I rarely host in order to pick a map. Generally speaking I only host to pick a map when I'm really close to completing Map Mastery and need a few extraction, so I'm going to claim a minimum bias on the numbers. Of course these are minimum numbers since, as we know, it stops counting until you've completed the challenge. Do you pick "normal" or "unpopular" maps or leave it as UNK?

Top three platinum maps:

Giant 414

White 313

Glacier 310

Least popular platinum maps:

Reactor 77

London 87

Vancouver/Hydra/Dagger 100

I find Reactors low stat to be very surprising. I can only speculate that most people go for Hazard Reactor rather than play the vanilla version. While London is famous for hacks, and Dagger and Hydra have a lot of open area, both Vancouver and Reactor are, I think, great maps with a good variety of cover and open areas.

Biggest percent difference between gold plays and platinum, which is to say that people don't mind playing gold there, but not platinum:

London 17%

Reactor 19%

Vancouver/Hydra/Dagger 24%

*But what about Condor? Well it seems that nobody likes Condor on Gold or Platinum so the difference is small. I've maxed out Hydra and Dagger currently, so there number could be as high as 109, which would put Condor at 106 in the less popular spot; however it is worth noting that this also highlights that it has taken me longer to get to 100 waves in Dagger and Hydra than for Condor.

The full list:

Firebase Ghost:
Gold Waves 487
Platinum Waves 130

Firebase White:
Gold Waves 513
Platinum Waves 313

Firebase Dagger:
Gold Waves 413
Platinum Waves 100

Firebase Giant:
Gold Waves 524
Platinum Waves 414

Firebase Glacier:
Gold Waves 540
Platinum Waves 310

Firebase Reactor:
Gold Waves 416
Platinum Waves 77

Firebase Condor:
Gold Waves 260
Platinum Waves 106

Firebase Hydra:
Gold Waves 416
Platinum Waves 100

Firebase Jade:
Gold Waves 300
Platinum Waves 110

Firebase Goddess:
Gold Waves 400
Platinum Waves 121

Firebase Rio:
Gold Waves 410
Platinum Waves 200

Firebase Vancouver:
Gold Waves 420
Platinum Waves 100

Firebase London:
Gold Waves 500
Platinum Waves 87

Hazard:
Gold Waves 573
Platinum Waves 234

Thanks for those BSNers that are willing to play the unpopular maps with me (J74C78).

With you on the team codsquallic/J74C78 (I've played with you from the AHF chat room), I'd play any map!  Can't add much re: plat since I don't pug it very much but most gold games seem to me to be U/U/G (the way I set it if I host, too).  Wish we could set it -- "anything except Condor or Hazard Ghost."

Yeah I don't know.  My map mastery is partially skewed by solos, and partially skewed by the timeframe I actually played Platinum team games.  I have only played ME3 on PC.

Back in the olden days there was a lot of Platinum farming.  Some people did White, which didn't make any sense, but original Glacier vs Cerberus actually became popular and that ended up being a popular Platinum map until it was changed.  I think this was before the challenges anyway so that shouldn't have affected it.

The next big farming sensation was Rio - Reapers, which actually was pretty crappy relative to others as far as farming history goes, IMO.  Practically any time I searched for a Platinum game it was Rio.  It was ultra rare that you would land in a map set to anything else, usually if you did find one not set to Rio it was on Random.

Glacier "speedrunning" (more accurately rocket farming) was in vogue as well and I ended up getting a lot of redesigned Glacier platinum waves grinding it to max my manifest.

Apparently after I was out of the Platinum team game scene Giant got popular.  Made sense to me since objectives suck less than Rio, and I hosted several games there during Loadstar as a public service since it is a decent map for that.  I am not surprised it has remained popular.   But in reality every single map is pretty campable against every faction on Platinum (at least for team games), so really it makes more sense to me to pick based on objectives (which is something Rio loses out on compared to nearly every other map).

Usually with friends we would set a map and then hit "next" after each game and just go through the maps that way.  That is how we got some variety.  Usually the only one friends would complain about was Condor.

After I had maxed my manifest and cared less and less about Platinum team games, I decided I should finish off some waves for maps that I hadn't completed already for Map Mastery.  IIRC this was only London, Condor and vanilla Reactor, all of which I finished via soloing (well I did one or two London team games).  I agree with the above observations about Reactor, it is probably that people are playing the hazard version, although as far as advantage goes it isn't a big deal in a team game.  The map layout is pretty good and most objectives aren't horrible.  Couple of hacks leave something to be desired though.

As far as Hydra goes, that was one of the first maps my friends and I beat on Platinum.  Goddess is another one that is mostly good save one or two objectives.  Same with Jade, really.

Outside of Rio which I just don't like, as far as irritating goes you have to list Ghost Hazard, Dagger Hazard, and Condor.  Just annoying mechanics and two of them have bad ammo boxes that can be a problem.

If I host plat, it's gonna be Collectors Glacier Hazard, Condor, London, Hydra, Dagger Hazard, Resctor Hazard. Else UUP with map forcing so we don't get Ghost Hazard. :/

I thought of about a dozen little things that completely nullify any conclusions made from this post. Too lazy to post them. Nice try, though, OP.

I love Hazard Ghost (as long as it's not Collectors)

I thought of starting a Hazard Ghost appreciation thread, but it would probably be hijacked by players claiming that Hazard Ghost was bugged  :P

Hazard Ghost with squishy characters -- you die just moving through the acid rain!  No problem with tanky characters, though.

*Double take* You what now...?

-----------------------------

I actually don't mind UUG/P but unfortunately I'm on PS3 and so that's a big no no, unless it's the last game of the evening.

There is certainly a reduced challenge when facing a known map with a set faction, which is a shame.

But the alternative is Hazard Ghost vs Collectors and a console crash past wave 6, so no thanks.

Thanks for the info, it's always interesting to know player's map preference on another platform.

BTW, Hydra Plat is quite popular on PC PuGs, I remember getting my Glacier/White/Giant/Hydra Plat waves challenge completed far ahead of other maps, and there are actually few players using the waterfall gitch, people tend to camp in the room on the left side tho.

+1 for this.  Hazard Ghost would be my favourite map by some distance if it wasn't for PS3 issues.  It's the only map where I genuinely have to think about where I am if I'm playing an ammo-dependent kit. Always good for genuine lols with inexperienced pugs.

OT I don't have all that much Plat experience, but I take a similar non-hosting approach and take what I get, which involves Giant more often than not.  In the time I've played maybe 16 or 17 games on Giant I have yet to play so much as a single wave on Dagger, Jade, Goddess, London or Rio, though I have had 3 epic successes on Condor.

hemadbro

but sure i'll bite.

First off, did you take into account that platinum waves complete gold waves for you?

Next, at bare minimum we need to see the percentage breakdown of your time spent playing gold vs platinum.

I would also want to see the full list of percentages instead of just "top 3s" because without that information we can't appreciate the range and significance of the numbers.

All of this is meaningless by the sheer fact that 10 waves might be 1 good game, or 3 bad ones.

Then add in the lack of precision in the data, and especially because that imprecision is weighted towards one end of that data - since popular maps will be played more, they will cap out sooner and thus lose more and more data as we continue waiting for less popular maps to finish.

Finally, I want to see how you're calculating things like "gold vs platinum" popularity, because as a description it's pretty meaningless.

Now sure, some of these I could hack numbers until I get the same ones you do and thus figure them out for myself, but some of these are just inherent to the data and thus I think that would be a waste of my time.

I've grown to hate hazard maps, they show up more often they statistically should in my experience which would not be as much of a problem if I was going into on going games with competent players.  I also dislike Glacier for a similar reason.  With a competent group glacier is a nice fast map.  Most pug games are anything but that and end up being big problem games.

While I agree with all of your post, it's possibly worth noting that these are scientific concerns in a self-acknowledged unscientific thread.  Still, the OP's stats are misleading because they do appear to have the 'plat gold waves' (if I can call them that) included with the gold figures.

I still welcome the discussion though, as it is possible to spot trends and patterns from anecdotal evidence.

...

Yes, this is definitely not perfect data, and I would recommend that no one use it as a basis for some thesis. There are issues and bias in the data, for the reasons you stated, and a couple of others. It would be great if I had keep records in order to alleviate some of the issues, but I didn't.

I can say that I look for Platinum 50% of the time, and almost always use U/U for searching, as such I think that there is a low bias in terms of me influencing the numbers.

That being said, I do think that there is some information in the data, like the (un)popularity of certain maps in Platinum, and (what I think is most interesting) that some maps people don't mind on gold, but avoid on platinum, or possibly they are more willing to set the game to U/U/G than U/U/P, or both.
