D&Ds complete crap mechanics have nothing to do with the frequency of death and everything to do with the inane cheapness of it.

Now you're my enemy.

First 12 seconds... aggressive enough for your punishment:

Looks like this one played on the easy.

KotoR ?   You can't be serious.   I played on the hardest difficulty possible (the first time playing) and I had to keep checking back in the options because it was so easy I couldn't even  believe it.   Likewise with DAO, I had to play on nightmare and severely handicap myself. (no healer/healing spells, no op DLC weapons/armors, no auto resurrections, no spells like that storm one indoors...

I come from a time where RPGs were MUCH tougher than any of this stuff...Dark Heart of Uukrul, Deathlord, Wizardry 4, Chaos Strikes Back, certain D&D Gold Box games like Pools of Darkness, Bards Tale 1/2, Realms of Arkania series.. None of that cheating & looking **** up on the net either back then.

What's with all this "Moar grey in Star Wars" crap? We never asked for any of that!

I did, KOTOR was extremely boring.

Given that I played KOTOR 2 first -- I'd argue that I never asked for essentially a rehash of A New Hope, replacing the Death Star with a limited resource providing space station and the Galactic Empire with a Sith Empire filled with twats.

KOTOR was too easy. Even Malak's fight wasn't hard.

And about looking #### up on the internet, there were some umpossible(!) mazes and mysteries that I could stuck in them and desert the game for months. So Internet is quite helpful for me in this aspect!

But I hate cheating. Entering codes is pathetic.

Had you read my post more carefully then you could have seen that I was joking.

Someone once put it well in stating putting moral greyness in the force is like putting magic in star treks warp drive. It just doesn't belong.

If putting magic in Star Trek's warp drive is what it takes to make a Star Trek game with characters and story as fascinating as KotOR II's then so be it. I would happily overlook the magic warp drive in order to enjoy such a game.

Except KOTOR was not hard at all, I can't believe people thought it was hard.

Wasn't even a simple matter of saying KOTOR is easy though. bussinrounds comes off as someone with an undeserved superiority complex when discussing any of the RPGs of an era gone by.

I think I just about got the top 10 without even looking.  It's a given anything by obsidian would be somewhat over valued, most BioWare titles would be pooped on.  nice they made a list though.  The number one thing that needs to be done for any of these lists however is for the person or people making them to write a good solid paragraph detailing what they think an rpg is and what is important because opinions vary wildly as to what makes an rpg a good rpg.

Funny they didn't list the best rpg of all time, Neverwinter Nights.  (And no I do not mean the included campaign.)

Oh no, I actually died in a game.  The horror !!

KotoR had pisss EASY combat, with MUCH fewer options, that required ZERO thought.   KotoR's combat even made DAO's look good by comparison.

ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

And Codex had a JRPG list from last year, btw.

zzzzzz crap mechanics are crap mechanics. I have died in every game I played. Death isn't the issue. Crappy game mechanics masquerading as difficulty are crap.

This P3 (the original) also had laughable death scenes cause instant death (that though could be avoided with the right Personas so I wasn't that annoyed I ran around with my person that was either immune (and you can get a persona immune or strong to instant death spells pretty early like ~30 which is usually when enemies begin spamming them) or resisted everything and switched once in combat so I didn't get killed by a bad ambush) but nothing was more hilarious and cheap than having your brain dead companions have you at 10% health and someone else at 20% but because their number was lower they healed the other instead of the protag mind the game ENDS if the protag dies and the other comp can probably be raised with little issue. I was forced to bring a healer Persona around because woe betide I rely on the dumb as bricks AI. They also seemed to be boggled to the concept of using their AOE elemental spells to knock the enemy down.

P3P fixed most of that because woe and behold RNG do not complex mechanics make!

And I don't even think you can avoid imprisonment.

The best was going to fight Liz without knowing the rules, going through those ten, long, boring floors just to get instant killed because you broke one oft he three unsaid rules and had to do those long, boring ten floors again hoping this time you did not break any rules.

Least Marge in P4 you could just teleport back to where she was if you broke one of the unsaid rules.

I didn't even do that fight XD I just use that dungeon to get to max lvl and call it a day.

Do you still have to completely climb up in P3P?

So one of my first comments here was about that link doesn't have all 70 top PC RPGs. Probably it was caused by my browser and internet failure to load them all.

Thanks again for not helping again.

Well, at least I found Interview with Chris Avellone at RPGNuke and RPG Codex Review: South Park: The Stick of Truth which are interesting.

About that list. It's an Ok one that need changes moving up/down several games and include a few. It's Old school but it's not like we have had many great RPGs since ME2 and New Vegas (2010). Only Witcher 2 comes to mind.

Yea.

Give me choices in cinematic dialog that lead to the same conclusion, cover based shooting and romances.  Screw real rpgs.

Your obsession against romances is pretty comical given your veneration of BG2.

I'll take romances over the travesty that is DnD 2.0 any day of the week.

I liked (not LOVED) the BG games because of the more 'gamey' aspects (should of been turn based though).. the interpretation of d&d, crawling around in the dungeons, the monsters and some of the well crafted encounters.. Not the plot, characters, ect...which was ok at times, but cringe-worthy a little too often also.

Besides the BG romances were a few lines of skipable text vs entire cinematic/voice acted scenes.  LOL.  I think a little more time/money/effort went into the ME romances.  (which could go towards other aspects obviously)

That you think D&D is a good ruleset is incomprehensible but that's a debate for another thread. But this just brings the hypocrisy out to the forefront: you ostensibly say that you care about gameplay, yet you somehow think that the fact that a game has romances means that developers will design a wholly different ruleset, or make the game cinematic, or have action combat? Even if you're right about the relative cost, the time/effort/money that went into the ME romances would go to (i) writing more plots (which you don't seem to like); (ii) having other cinematics for those plots (which you seem to think are useless); and (iii) having VO for other lines.

Do you think that Skyrim and Oblivion became increasingly less complex in their mechanics, and more shallow in their question design because of romances too?
