No, it's romance only.

Which kind of annoys me.. It might be the most "complete" story for the Warden. Everyone says the Warden is missing, and this makes for a good excuse why. What doesn't make sense is that every other Warden is missing too.. And to make things more confusing, she leaves something for you.. and you get this dramatic music as you look at it... and then..... Credits roll. Wtf.

Sorry. Went on a tangent there.

It was really just crappy design. The whole which hunt is a laughable bit of DLC. I got it as part of the ultimate edition so I don't care, but I can only imagine how people felt if they bought it. I wonder what they charged for it? Anything more than $5 was a rip off in my opinion. The whole thing was a big tease for people who either wanted more morrigan time or wanted more answers. They got neither. Game play was pathetic as well. More of a time waster than a really well done bit of DLC.

I think it still holds value just for the little bit of lore it provides. While Amgarrak is at least worth it for Reaper's Cudgel. That thing can be sold for nearly 300 gold. It just makes subsequent playthroughs a breeze.

If he is a warden, he should be brought in by CHOICE, like at the start, you decide if you Alistair is with you given he is a warden as well and should be there with you when you are securing Amaranthine. It makes zero sense that he is not unless he left or is the king. I feel with these DLCs they just couldn't really be bothered to do the kind of cutscenes and interactions they did for the Original DAO. In fact, it's evident they decided to steer away from them given how DA2 progressed.

It is ridiculous how Alistair doesn't even have a *cameo* as a Grey Warden in Awakening.  He could at least just pop up and say hi (maybe swapping with Loghain's cameo?) and explain that he's busy and give an excuse for not being there.  Or, at the very very least, have Varel acknowledge there's another Grey Warden (Alistair) who's elsewhere.  Nope, it's like he never existed until the epilogue slides :/

At the gates in the final battle one of the soldiers always has that damn thing. He's fighting with a damn toilet brush! Always amuses me....

This is one of my distinct dislikes about DAA and why I feel like they took the lazy way out or were really set on you making him king, which I still see as you not being a warden but rather getting involved in politics, WHICH they even acknowledge in DA2 if he is a warden.

As much as I see some of Alistair's dialogue as getting annoying, as a general rule he is my love interest. As a lesser rule, unless I am really tired of him and throwing fireballs around him and the enemies to kill him because I'm that tired of the dialogue where telling him to shut it gets me nasty tones I still feel he is a fellow warden and he should be there in amaranthine, even more so because you are the only two ferelden wardens and this is a new post with Orlesians. The two from ferelden SHOULD be there to get things in order. It makes no sense. The blight is over and there is no real reason he cannot be there. What would a few cutscenes have cost them? Some extra dialogue. We get Oghren for cripes sake and I don't really even care for him, and I NEVER use him except when forced. Perhaps they discovered enough people didn't like alistair whining so they didn't include him, but you know, the thing about alistair is once you get past a certain point, he's fine. Hardened or not, once that landsmeet is over, if he a warden it might be a nice time to see what you begin to see when he is made king or if he is hardened where he seems less whiny and more of what you would expect for a warden. But no... we get.... oghren.

Yes and in a few games I really liked how she was when I helped her before the game started bugging on her grimoires. It would have been nice for those who wanted to play again with her as they did in DAO. I see this the same way I see DAA. They bring in a main companion for a quick cameo but it really should have that companion more than for two minutes or less. Instead you get new companions. At least I like Nathaniel in DAA but in all the others.... not one among them is anything but another body to me.

Actually, he's okay enough. I don't dislike him. I just wonder why the hell we end up with him and not an actual grey warden who was with us from minute one in ostagar. I swear it was budget because both morrigan and Alistair are voiced by talented actors who have done a fair amount of TV. They probably are not cheap. But even then I would think that for these DLCs, it wouldn't have been more than a day of work. Not that many lines to read. Seems so silly they didn't just bring them in.

Oghren was voiced by one of more famous and prolific voice actors (Steve Blum). I don't think that had anything to do with it.

I'm guessing they used Oghren instead of the other companions because:

A) He's always recruited

B ) He's really hard to kill

C) He has nothing better to do after Origins, apparently.

D) His fate doesn't vary based on the Warden's actions/ conversations with him (except if they hate each other and he leaves/ the Warden kills him, which is difficult to accomplish)

Oghren is one of my favorites, but for my main character, I booted him at the beginning. He gets pissed at Anders, since I conscripted him.

But I did it as a favor. My Dalish hates being a Warden.. I feel like it's out of character to make him one. He needs to go home and raise his kid. It goes back to my conflict with Alistair. Being a Warden is a punishment. Not an honor.

Funnily, Anders realizes this himself too.

I seem to recall something on old!BSN about Oghren being used in DAA because so few players killed him.

Maybe the 'revenge' line is there for the players who are angry that Morrigan ran off with a really really pricey bit of gear.

"Where's my Staff of the Magister Lord? REVENGE WILL BE MINE!!!!!" *stab stab* /snark

I can almost hear the Warden telling Morrigan off in James Earl Jones' voice in The Great White Hope.

"You lucky I too busy to find you girl; you sellin' my rings, my clothes, my silver brushes..."

I can't even imagine what you have to do to get to hate with him or kill him. I never like that you get -10 or -13 right off the bat because you have to deal with is lunatic wife who turned their whole house into ghouls or killed them testing traps. I get that it's his wife, but damn, she was a loon if ever there was one. He should have given me approval for ridding him of her once and for all and getting him closure.

His approval is totally bugged though in DAA. I have to use the AIS emporium mod and stock up on maybe 50-60 of his items just to get his quest in DAA because his approval is broken and some of them are just a point or two. I've never found all of his DAA items either. Anders and Nathaniel are very easy. Sigrid and Valenna I always miss some stuff, but oghren, I only find some of his stuff and then it doesn't always give me the right amount of points. Also, why doesn't the game remember how I build him in DAO? It reallocated his points on me every time.

But I will take him over Valenna who I kill on the spot. She's crazy and needs to be put down. Since I can't save her sister as far as I know, there's no point in recruiting her.

Velanna's badass.

Funnily they're both written by Sheryl Chee. And Sigrun. She can write anything.

Yeah I found this kind of annoying. If I import a surviving Warden, there's no good reason why Oghren's approval should be reset. But then, Awakenings is full of terrible bugs anyway. The completionist in me is always annoyed by the fact that being able to obtain Valenna's personal quest is simply a crapshoot.

The only thing I don't like about Awakening is it's out of place for my elf to take on the Commander role there. You function as an Arl and stand around a throne that looks like a Mabari. It's too Ferelden.

But whatever. It's kind of funny if you save the Vigil. Then the people blame the elf for burning Amaranthine out of "revenge". That's a nice touch.

He has voiced Wolverine several times. This is probably one reason why I like Oghren even more now. Whenever he makes his battle sounds, I always think Wolverine.

I only recently started playing elves consistently and I've yet to do awakening as an elf, but when I do, she's going to get a kick that she now has power over them and dictates terms over them. Killing the nobles that are still loyal to howe is going to be the icing on the cake for her as howe purged her home and killed people she knew most of her life. Good times!

  • There are 3-4 very resonant conversations available if you're a Dalish Warden that make the DLC golden, IMO.  It's so much more closure than you get in the main game.  Most of the other Origins get to revisit their starting points with more depth; Mahariel's is a freaking road encounter.  This makes up for it.
  • Ariane is the franchise's first female warrior companion who doesn't die straight off (like temporary companions Mom Cousland and poor sacrificial Mhairi)
  • Finn is a Firefly fan.
  • Both companions are quite likeable. Ariane manages to demonstrate Dalish pride without coming across as strident, and Finn injects his stuffy scholar stereotype with some needed humor.  Even occasionally potty humor.
  • More companion dialogue with Dog!
  • The quest in the library is funny.  "Does This Book Have Griffons In It?"
  • Area reuse mostly made sense (final scene aside) and they mostly used areas that got less use during the game. (Circle Tower would be the exception.)
  • The Sorrows of Arlathan and the Vestments of the Seer are pretty sweet gear
  • Sneak preview of the vartaraal
  • Dog's reunion with Morrigan was sweet.  No one can resist the puppy eyes. No one!

Although I did feel like I'd been baited and switched at the end of the DLC, I rather enjoyed it up until that point. And it was awesome as a Dalish. I felt like I got my money's worth.

I always think of Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop). He also did Grunt from ME.
