After seeing the trailers and information given out of DAI during the E3 press conferences and mulling them over a little bit, I was waiting for the public demand for my opinions on the matter. Since everyone seems to be too inconsiderate to make such demands, I decided to nobly write some random thoughts here anyway. And, to give a small warning, they are relatively boring.
I. Even though I think the Inquisitor helmet is really ugly, I do admire the solution they managed to get with it. A huge problem in trying to advertise games is that you need that character that can be easily identified as the player character. This problem was seen with the initial concept art published at the Facebook site showing those PCs of different races in different situations, yet because there was nothing to make the person seeing them connect the characters as actually being PCs. However, with the helmet, there is that instant connection which they have been successful in establishing so far, as everyone seemed to realize that the woman in the trailer was the Inquisitor, even though it was the first time we really saw her.
II. The environments are beautiful and seem to have a lot of character in them, which seems good considering how much attention they have put in to that.
III. Different people value different things in trailers and a lot of people here have indicated that they were looking forward to a better idea of combat in the game, which I guess they half got? Maybe? While marketing, the companies want to focus on different things and bring out what they consider important in the game, which in this case has very publicly been the exploration and sense of finding things. If you just read those last two sentences, you might be slightly confused why I decided to mention two such ridiculously obvious things. The thing is, a couple of months ago I was re-watching for reasons the trailers for both DA2 and ME3, and even already in the trailers I kind of felt you could sense how ambitious the stories they wanted to tell were. And as someone to whom, I hope you it correctly there, stories and narratives are perhaps a highest priority, those trailers just sold me the games at that moment. It is also one of the reasons I will love those games, because of what they tried to and succeeded to do with stories and narratives.
The reason I bring this up, is that after seeing these trailers, seeing those beautiful sights and introduced to the characters, I have no idea what they are trying to do with the story. Actually, that is slightly false, as I have seen the Laidlaw interview where he spoke about power and how it makes people act, but there is nothing about that in the trailers. Instead we got "There is a big, bad Evil. We need to defend against it. Oh, I have this special brand that makes me the only one who can defeat the evil. Oh, and yeah, because of that, the Evil hunts me." The story, based on the trailers seen so far and in just my opinion, just really, really generic.Like even more generic than DAO. And I realized that it made me hesitate really for the first for the game, as I became worried that because of the vocal backlash on DA2 and ME3, Bioware decided to play it safe and reign it in storytelling-wise. I don't know how justified such fears are and I guess we will see more as the game closes in, but at the moment it something that is causing me concern for the game, as I really want to like and I think I have enjoyed all their games so far.
