I really thought that the holographic type museum in the Citadel Archives (Citadel DLC) was very cool.  It gave us a glimpse of the past.  This gave me an idea...

Wouldn't it be cool if you could traverse the galaxy and find digital artifacts that you can use to unlock cool, new holographic history lessons in the Citadel Archives?  Maybe you could also find physical artifacts too!  With each item you find, it gets added to the archives.  Not only do you unlock some cool little video on it (codex), but you actually see it in the museum.

Thoughts?

It would make side quests feel less monotonous and forgettable (eh hem...UNC: Asari Writings...), I think.

I liked this idea. Would be really interesting and drive the point home in terms of the exploration side of the game.

I have to agree. This would motivate me to actually do all sidequests and not feel bored during most of them.

Why limit it to just holographic?

Doesn't have to be limited. That was the only salient idea that came to mind.

The notion of "seeing" into the past via unlocking holographic videos in a hub world should sate the appetite for wanting to go back in time with the next game should BioWare decide to set the game after the Shepard trilogy.  It'd make for a very cool compromise.

Lost citadel record fragments could be a lot of fun; it could build on what we already know about the past. Could be a good story mechanic too for a kind of conspiracy twist. Something like that the Turians were already aware of humanity before the first contact war, and Elizabeth II was actually a turian and ate human... okay, maybe not that particular plot device.
