if the drone decides between "shock" and "chain-lightning"
based on the situation (shock for bad-ass-enemies who cannot be staggered by chain lightning  /  chain-lightning for 3 clustered cannibals, etc.),
I would take shock + chain lightning.

But if chain-lightning is capable of staggering phantoms (???),   I would take 5=damage  +  6=chain lightning.

The damage also increases the explosion which is nice.

Ok, time for a more detailed explanation.

The Combat Drone has a lightning attack, which can stun enemies.  If you take the first 3 ranks, you will only get this lightning attack which will work against one enemy.  This lightning attack has a SHORT range.

Rank 4 is self-explanatory.

Rank 5 has 5a Shock and 5b Shields and Damage.  If you take 5a Shock, at close range, the Combat Drone has a choice between Shock or lightning attack.  Shock is better because it does more damage than lightning attack and has a AOE effect.  The lightning attack does less damage and only against 1 target.  Both Shock and lightning attack can stun.   At long range, the Combat Drone will not attack.  It will move towards the enemy and then use either Shock or lightning attack.

Rank 6 has 6a Rockets and 6b Chain Lightning.  6a Rockets allow the Combat Drone to attack at range instead of moving towards the enemies.  6b Chain Lightning boosts the lightning attack to hit up to 4 targets instead of 1.  Remember that this lightning attack can stun.  You do not need the Shock evo to stun.

While 6a Rockets allow you to attack at range, it will also cause the Combat Drone to move away from enemies since rockets do not work at close range.  This will negate Detonate, Shock and lightning attack since these are all close range attacks.

Thought shock was one enemy and lightening up to three? Maybe mistaken though.

The one certainty you can take away from all the above is that regardless of which evolutions you choose for ranks 4 to 6, you should always go for the full 6 ranks for Combat Drone.  Long range - rockets.  Short range - Chain Lightning for additional 3 targets.

Even if you choose Shock for rank 5, at close range, Combat Drone will choose either Shock or lightning attack.  If the latter, Chain Lightning allows you to attack and possibly stun an additional 3 targets.  Without Chain Lightning, the lightning attack will only attack and stun 1 enemy.

Shock is AOE across a 5 m radius (more likely diameter).  Chain Lightning hits up to 3 additional targets so 1+3=4.  Overload can chain up to 3 enemies.

Anyone happens to know how the decision between shock and lightning attack is made?

Without the chain lightning upgrade, I suppose it could be observed/tested in game. Is there a difference in the visuals?

I don't think anyone has ever figured that out.

thanks for your long and detailed answer!  But it does not answer any of my questions (maybe it was not for me?)

It is still unclear based on what the drone decides whether to take shock or chain lightning.

And if the chain-lightning is capable of staggering high-tier enemies such as Phantoms.

(that it can stun cannibals, is sure)

Also, if it then would be recommendable to take 5:damage and 6:chain-lightning,

Also, according to the Wiki, the chain-lightning can only stagger 3 enemies - not 4.

Wiki:  "The chaining effect provided by the rank 6 Chain Lightning evolution has a maximum range of 10m. In addition, despite the in-game wording, the evolution lets the drone hit 3 total targets, not 3 additional targets."

Even if you choose Shock for rank 5, at close range, Combat Drone will choose either Shock or lightning attack.

THAT is really helpful !

I should have gotten this by myself ;-)

Now it is clear to take shock + chain-lightning instead of skipping 6:chain-lightning,

otherwise 50% of the attacks may only be the base-attack.

It was a general discussion of the mechanics.  I did not address your specific questions because I do not know the answers.

Thanks for the clarification on the last point.  I stand corrected.

meh, what I did was just "bean counting".
