I'm thinking he'll be a little less...familiar with these companions than he was with Hawke's. I don't doubt he'll become friends with them, but I can't see it happening as quickly, or as easily, as it does in DA2. So nicknames according to their positions/already existing titles, with the chance that he might give them something less formal towards the end of their banter chain.

That didn't stop him from calling Anders "Blonde" very soon after they met, or Bethany "Sunshine."  He seems to have a habit of giving people clever nicknames.   That's why I thought some of the companions and advisers would have more "cute" nicknames, and others would simply go by title, particularly the characters I see as possibly being more serious (Cassandra, the Warden, Cullen.)  With Vivienne, I picked "Madame" since she's already know as the Lady of Iron, and I thought Varric would be a little too intimidated by her to try to give her something cute and/or silly.

But there's a difference between Hawke's Ragtag Bunch of Misfits and the Capital-I-Inquisition. As portrayed to Cassandra, Varric's relationship with Hawke was a chummy one, and their initial goals small scale and not of earth-shattering importance. The nicknames he uses both underlines the fact that Hawke's entourage is not the Warden's entourage (working towards an immediate threat), and that he had a central, unifiying, role in the story.

I mean, I could be absolutely wrong, and I still think nicknames are a given. However, I want Varric to be different in a lot of small ways in Inquisition, to not only reflect the fact that the Varric we're getting is no longer being viewed through the flattering lens of his own fiction (where he always knows just what to say and how), but to also drive home the idea that the Inquisitor's crew are accomplished (?) in a way that Hawke's wasn't. He was a comfortable figure in Kirkwall, surrounded by displaced and/or wounded souls but very much at home. The Inquisition has him out of that comfort zone and forced to hold his own with heavies who are playing a much larger game than "I want to buy a house for my mom". I could see his early interactions with many of the other companions being more awkward, and even strained.

Solas - Frosty
Sera - Squirrel
Cole - Spooky
Warden - Scruffy
Iron Bull - Muscles, Pointy, Beefcake
Cassandra - Seeker, maybe Cass, Dragonslayer
Cullen - Depends on his disposition in the game. If he's a big negative nancy, then I'd wager he gets nick'd "Mopey"
Leliana - Red
Scribbles - Scribbles (as stated before, it just works)

But whatever they end up being, we know they'll at least be fitting!

From what I have heard about Cole 'Spooky' seems like it would be a very apt description.  Also I would kill for him to call Cassandra Cass, considering I have taken to calling her 'Cass Cass'.

There was also Tallis from MotA, he called her Shivs in that short time and, like most of the companions, didn't really care for her.
