It is something I always find myself wishing for in games that lets you, at least to some degree, create your own character. Especially when the game has a (more or less) unique setting. More specifically, I would like a tool that lets me create unique names for my characters that still fits both the setting and the individual character.

Ideally, the tool would change it's algorithm and sample pool based on the race/gender/culture of origin, but still allow for enough variety as to give each name an "original" feel.

I was going to provide more examples to illustrate what I want, but right now, the only one I can think of is SWTOR's character creator: the name generator provides different results, heavily influenced by race and gender selection, reflecting the differences between the various cultures and species. You still have to sort through a bunch of nonsensical combinations before you find something that seems cool and fitting, but for a Twi'lek you can get a distinctly "twi'lek" name, or a name that reflects how the character was raised on the streets of Nar Shaddaa rather than in a Twi'lek community. Likewise, a Chiss can get a name that properly reflects Chiss culture, or not.

As I said, I was going to mention more examples. I can distinctly recall seeing name generators in other games that fits with what I'm looking for, but I don't have nearly as much control over my highly selective memory as I'd like. If any of you can think of other examples to illustrate what I'm looking/asking for, feel free to share. Beyond that, I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants this.

Post script: I had to stop myself from adding some words on why I think "My Feature™" would be easy to implement, and what I think might be the challenges with it, because I don't think that's relevant to my request or even the sub-forum. So let's not turn the thread into that.

Really? I never used those generators.Creating your own char is a personal thing and editting everything about his/her appearance just to use some generator for a name somehow seemed cheap to me. As if degrading him/her to a john/jane doe.

If it doesn't come with a name generator, just ask me and I'll generate random names for everyone on the forums.

Normally I like to create my own first name, but if there's a last name slot, I usually randomize that.

What I usually do is dig up name generators around the internet until I find one capable of producing I name that I feel fits, in addition to feeling at least somewhat original. I am not creative enough, by any stretch, to come up with a name on my own that fits both criteria. I am especially bad at names.

The reason I am suggesting this as a feature is two-fold. One, I find that "alt+tab"-ing out of the game at the end of the character creation, because I don't even start to think about names before that, is more than a little inconvenient. Two, when I do manage to find a name that I like for the character, and I feel like it fits the character, I am still unsure of whether the name will actually fit the setting.

It would be pretty handy.  Though I think for human names in Thedas you're probably better off just grabbing a real name from appropriate cultures (English and Celtic for Fereldan) and tweaking it to be a bit more fantasy than any procedural generation.

I do that, or at least I used to, with names that has stuck by me from various books and films and other media, even if I've forgot the context. Recently however, a perceived lack of originality has begun nagging me whenever I do that. Which is why I've increasingly been using name generators.

Built-in name generator would be nice cuz I have like 15 characters in DAO+DAII and I'm running out of good characters names. Like Thomas, I prefer names that follow the conventions of the character type's culture and whatnot. Elves, Dwarves, and Humans all have different naming conventions and language. And for Qunari, I'm not even sure what kind of names they use because we really have only seen Qunari of the Qun, which only uses titles/ranks.

Ooh, how'd you figure how to make that? 'Cause then we could do something similar for Qunari.

Most of my characters are named after ASOIAF characters. Arya Amell, Brienne Brosca, Catelyn Cousland, Hodor Hawke...

Coming up with a good name can be difficult. It won't matter for my first few characters because I have them planned out but after that a name generator could be helpful but in no way essential.
