Hey guys, I'm working on a youtube personality and I know how to do the effects but I forgot what the accents of Quarians are. I know Tali kind of sounds like a Russia but there's that aggressive Quarian who sounds like an english man. My voice is quite calm and soft so  I can't do a Turian. What is the most common used accent?

Most have a Romani accent I believe, with a few exceptions here and there.

I think the writers were imagining space gypsies/or traveler or whatever the correct english name is.

People who sound differently, people who arn't welcome anywhere, people with a bad reputation that they can't seem to get rid of. Somewhat hotheaded, can't let go of old grudges. Exiles those of their people who break convention in different ways.
Also, lots of prejudice and suspicion.

I think that is what decided what the voiceacting would sound like.

In Mass Effect: Acention and codex they also describe their lives onboard the flotilla in a way similar way to a Traveler camp with shacks and inventive approaches to survival. A tightknit group that's weary of outsiders.
In the Book; When they learn about the Reapers the admiralty decides to send out explorer parties to look for livable planets or Reaper ships that could help them influence the removal of the Geth from their homeworld. Looking for either tech or some other kind of solution to their problem. Before that they wern't interestign in exploring or seeking a new planet to live on, but when they had another reason to go out and look for something both the people like Koris who wanted to find a new planet and the warhawks of the admiralty agreed that there were interesting opportunities to be found out there.
In the Serb/bosnian war there were some Gypsy/romany people who joined the Serb side and were accused of being part of deathsquads.
Maybe that was part of the idea that the Quarians, if they were soemwhat like that would try to ally with a stronger force for their own benefit(Reapers/collectors).

If you look at Mass Effect though almost every actor in the war seems to be looking for their own interests and a way to come out on top. The Asari hoarding tech and saving their forces and not helping the others. Salarians, saving their forces and demanding that the genophagecure is sabotaged or they won't help fight the Reapers. The Krogans demands a cure immediately or they won't help.
The Quarians tells shepard they arn't interested in thinking about the Reapers until their "homeworld" is safely in their hands, and out of the dead hands of the Geth.
The list goes on.
Personaly I don't think the Turian and Krogan requests were unreasonable. The Krogan demand was kind of an extortion but at the same time, I can't blame them for wanting to end their time in purgatory if they are to become heroes of the galaxy once again.

I think it would be possible to apply cultural or linguistic paralels to several of the species of Mass Effect.
Several people seem to think the Batarians reminds them of North Korea, there were a few other options aswell. Basicly Extreme isolationism, paranoia, slavery, lack of "human" rights.

One could say that most of the species and empires of Mass Effect and characters are based on historical figures or nations or history from our world. With a few modifications here and there. It's obvious that a writer would be inspired by what they know, it's hard to immagine the unknown.

Thanks guys but I'm after the accent for males. On another forum, someone said that it can vary. I just listened to
Han'Gerrel vas Neema talk and that's definitely a British accent. The male Quarian online sounds Romanian. Imagine a quarian that sounds like Bane :)

Random Fact. Han'Gerrel's VA is the same guy that did Loghain for DAO.

I guess that makes him an expert at traitorous people and villains.

DA:O, His character let the king get killed by sabotaging the battleplan and withdrawing reinforcements. Which conveniently put him in power.

ME3: Blowup the dreadnaught Shepard and Tali is on due to convenience and personal gain.

Maybe we should try and identify the different characters roles based on who is voiceactign who in the next game :) It might give an indication to the plot to come :)

None of the accented Quarians use the same accent.

My head canon is that the Quarians with accents are speaking the alien language (galactic?) that serves as the lingua franca for Citadel space, but because they aren't native speakers (unlike Liara, Garrus, or Mordin), they speak it with an old Rannoch regional accent, or perhaps with the accent of whatever ship they are from, assuming the various Live Ships have their own 'regional' dialects. The Quarians who don't have accents are not fluent in galactic, and instead are speaking a Quarian dialect, and being rendered either into English or galactic by Shepard's universal translator.

It would also be terribly boring if there was ony one female and one male version for every character.

Thoguh realisticly, that's likely what would happen if a translator progam translated. I guess they could add variations for the same of sanity and entertainment for the users. Perhaps as a way of indicating that this is a billbilly, this a redneck and this a bigcity guy. Adding cross cultural references to indicate the linguistic characteristics used by the person talking.

Kal'Reegar sounds pretty American to me.

It seems to be whatever the voice actor felt like.

Can't say. What's the accent of a human?

There's nothing to suggest they're a monoculture, or even that they only have one language. On the contrary, we're told that there are numerous "clans" (not sure if that's comparable to our division into nation-states) and different factions in the fleet like the Outlier's Coalition. I wouldn't expect them all to sound alike.

We don't even know if they had a single unified government, pre-war.

Australian, British, Balkan, Arabic, Western (ie American/Canadian), I could imagine Rannoch having regional sub dialects not different from here on Earth. Just glad they didn't do anything cheesy. The first Quarian I hear with a "Git er Done" type tone in their accent and the series goes out the airlock.

The Quarians are largely based on Hebrew and other Middle Eastern culture, but the accents are random.

Tali's accent is Eastern European-Middle Eastern; Xen, Koris and Gerrel are British; Reegar is American; Rael sounds German; Dr. Elan'Shiya is Canadian and Raan is Iranian. The young Quarian women on Illium both have American/Canadian accents.
