And it shows she ascribes the same mentality to humans, and not an inherent failing of aliens

And where do you get that she has an inherent dislike for aliens?  What is her perspective?  She shows more disdain for Udina than most aliens she winds up in contact with.

I think she's more pessimist and cynic than anything else. And way more than she's racist, obviously. That's the reason I don't like her, and not her supposed "racism".

She may be right, but as I said...not my cup of tea.

And it shows she's ascribing human values and beliefs to aliens and their values and beliefs.

Which in itself is not a bad thing. Slavery may be a fixture of Batarian culture, but that doesn't mean we're obligated to tolerate it when they raid one of our colonies.

It's an observed trait, mainly one that I see from various comments ("I can't tell the aliens from the animals"), her apprehension towards them, her dismissing remarks about Liara, and general statements about not trusting them.

That quote was a bug, I think - she's only supposed to say it in close proximity to Keepers. What were these dismissive remarks? IIRC she requests that Shepard check in on her after killing Benezia.

I believe she also plays Lanaya in DA:O

Normally this would make me want to play DA:O again... but I resisted and youtube'd a conversation with Lanaya  instead. I can't believe I never picked up on that before. It's so obvious.

Her friendship with other aliens on the crew seems to come from long-term exposure, and there really isn't much to say about her relationships prior to ME3.

In fairness, Liara is the daughter of Benezia, who just so happens to be Saren's second-in-command; there's a legitimate security worry here. Also, I'm not sure why developing friendships with aliens as a result of being around them makes the friendship somehow less legitimate; do non-space racists become best buddies with aliens they just met?

You do know the "aliens from the animals" thing is a bug, right?  I mean, literally.  She's referring to the Keepers.

Apprehension?  You mean like "And that's why I hate politicians"

Her dismissing remarks about Liara were about Liara.  Not about asari or any other alien.

Let me guess, you don't mind Wrex's blatant racism against Salarians and Turians, or Tali's blatant racism against the Geth. Right?

She even quotes poetry and talks about having to be better than the best, since she didn't grow up dalish :D

The latter isn't racism; it's a legitimate assessment based on their recorded actions. Her policy towards the Geth changes once new information comes to light. And I know what Weekes said; I still think it's crap.

Wanting to deactivate the credit-stealing AI on the Citadel on account of it being an AI, on the other hand, yes, I would call that discrimination.

No, I don't know that that's a bug, nor am I inclined to believe that it is. To me, it sounds pretty disparaging to aliens in general, regardless of whether or not she's talking about the Keepers.

No, apprehension, why she feels ill at ease and uncomfortable around aliens.

Arguable. I saw a tone that went a bit more undercut than just it being on Liara. "You know what those Asari are like"

It is a bug.  Fire up ME1 and check.  Every time she says that, there's a Keeper nearby.  The problem is the radius was too big so it's not always clear that it's what she's referring to.  It never got fixed.

So she's uncomfortable around aliens when she's chatting with Tali about the Migrant Fleet?  Or Garrus about leaving C-Sec?  or volunteering to work with an all-salarian unit on Virmire?  Even to the point of insisting on it?

So we're admitting the interpretation of tone into evidence now?

RACISM is RACISM people. Doesn't matter if you have a good reason or not, because there's no such bloody thing

Tell me, is it racist to see the Reapers as categorically hostile in light of their actions, and to treat them as such? Or is a complete lack of contrary evidence not cause enough?

First learn to love your country, or your people as a whole, then have it someone else threaten them. We'll see if you turn into a "racist" or not.

It's easy to say that from the nihilistic point of view. Very easy.

ME galaxy was written to be imperfect with imperfect people. I don't know what the big deal is with Ashley's racism, I still like her.

Besides racist or not, most of the time she was right.

Killing slavers is a fixture of my family since countless generations. That means no one is gonna go and oppress our culture, right? :D

I don't believe you. I'll fire up ME1, hear the line, and go "my god, why do I have this racist on my crew?"

Time breeds familiarity. You know that. And you know my statement never precluded that. As for the Salarians, I'd say that was a situation where she would be what I'd call as wreckless. It's not necessarily glory hounding, but it's her wanting to prove she's better than her name.

Even if this is 100% true, how does it have anything to do with the likelihood that Ashley is a racist?

Another point: I think it's a major fallacy to equate well-written characters with characters who have traits that we would admire in real life. I don't like racists; I also don't like people who totally stab me in the back, but this doesn't mean that it's bad writing when Zevran does it at Denerim in DA:O. The question is this: Does it make sense that Ashley has the attitude towards aliens that she has, given her background, life experiences, etc.?
