Ashley's development happens in ME1 where Shep tries to talk her into trusting aliens. The only result I've seen from that is if she survives she becomes close with Tali, if she dies her memorial has a quote, "Humans or aliens, we are all animals" (or something like that).

You can also paragon her in ME1 to trust aliens more, to the point where she advocates saving the Destiny Ascension.

Granted you have to be in a romance with her, which is kinda lame requirement

Especially since fem!Sheps can't romance her. Things like that shouldn't be restricted to romance.  -_-

I tend too agree that it doesn't happen before the cure but it still happens. They could've shown better development in this regards.

The real problem with Ashley in ME3 is actually the opposite, she's no longer "racist" or "religious" and barely talks after recruiting her. Good or bad those things make her stand out and give her some character. Taking all those away she's basically reduced to a boring grunt that has a minor drinking problem. It may be charming but it is not interesting anymore.

In short, Ashley is merely a shell of her former glory in ME3. And of course this is nothing new, but I still want to point out that of all the main squadmates in ME3, Ashley got screwed over the most IMO.

I agree. She wasn't my favorite character in ME1...and I didn't agree with anything she said. But Chris L'Etoile's writing was pretty good and I always found Ashley to be a very realistic and well crafted character. But ME3 Ashley...I somewhat regret saving her over Kaiden now.

I think there is an important distinction between disliking the character as a character and disliking the character because of their writing.

Yeah, there is.

However, for me personally, and I'm guessing this puts me in the minority, I dislike her (to put it very mildly) as a character and because of her writing, in ME1 and ME3 (and for the 4 minutes that she's in ME2).
