It was already stated at Pax, that we would have 3 of each class. Considering that we have 9 different companions this time, I think that this is great and it gives us a lot of diversity across the board. So far between Vivienne and Solas, two completely different sides of the spectrum and I suspect DHMG is the third and possibly represents the Tevinter Mage, giving us all three sides to the Mages. Either way, even if this wasn't confirmed, I think I'd be pretty frustrated with just one mage on my team. I prefer playing as either Rouge or Warrior and if I don't like the mage character they give us, I'm either reduced to playing as a mage myself of simply not having one on my team. There's also the fact that unless that mage is profiecent in healing, I either have to completely rely on potions or again, play as a healing mage. If that mage is a healer, then it's still frustrating because I have to deal with a character I don't like being on my team.
Only one mage!

Nope.
Imagine if the one mage was Anders.... I could barely stand to put him in my group in the one play-through (mandatory) where I romanced him. If he was the only mage then he'd be the only healer and I'd have to take him... (in DA2 you almost had to do this, but Merrill could be modded to have heals).
I greatly prefer variety. Having 3 mages (what DA:I has) allows me to go through 3 playthroughs, each with a different mage, before I start repeating. Plus story wise mages make interesting characters, having one on the side of the circles/chantry (Vivienne), one anti templar (Solas), and one who isn't involved at all (Dorian, or DHMG as we know him), provides good view points for every situation.
Same. It's why I couldn't manage to get very far in my non mage playthroughs. I just couldn't stand being stuck with Anders.
I like to have a variety with each class, not just mages, so I can pick who I adventure with as opposed to just being stuck with someone.

I don't get the point of this thread. There's always been more than one Mage in the party.
Origins: Morrigan and Wynne
Awakening: Anders and Velanna
DA2: Anders, Bethany possibly, and Merrill

Having just one mage would suck hard. In DA2, Bethany was my regular mage thorughout all of Act 1, and after she was taken to the Circle, I sacrificed the healer for Merrill as my offensive caster, because I didn't really care to drag Anders about. If it was just Anders, then I wouldn't have another caster back in the group until the end of Act 3 and the DLC's (Force/Elemental/Healer mage Bethany is the best!).

One mage? are you serious? that mage should have all the magic schools available, and god forbids that you don't want him/her in the group (fortunately for me, on DA2 on PC, I could mod Merrill to have heals, and I just left anders at home. I like the guy, but he is a pain in the ass in DA 2. And this comes from a raunchy pro-mage player).
I'm glad we have mage choices on all DA games. Of course, since I prefer to play mages as my PCs...I always have an overabundance of mages on my parties ![]()

This. Having only one means that someone might be forced to pick a character they dislike or die. Imagine if Morrigan had been the only Mage in Origins and your warden refused to do the dark ritual. Welp, better hope that you have thousands of health poultices. Or imagine the pain of the Sebastian fans if keeping him meant killing their only mage?
Maker no!

Let's see
PC Mage/Rogue/Warrior and:
- 3 mages
- 3 rogues
- 3 warriors
- 1 mage, 1 rogue and 1 warrior
- 1 mage and 2 rogues
- 1 mage and 2 warriors
- 1 rogue and 2 warriors
- 1 warrior and 2 rogues
- 2 mages and 1 rogue
- 2 mages and 1 warrior
10* 3 = 30 combinations of warrior, rogue and mage in a party of 4.
Taking into account every party member:
28 + 21 + 15 + 10 + 6 + 3 + 1 = 84
84 is the number of unique combinations you can have of your 9 party members.
(No duplicates)
Then multiply 84 by 3 and you get 252 possible unique combinations.
Lots of replayability then. ![]()

The problem with this setup.
(The problems with only 1 mage have been covered well) is too many warriors.
6 warriors.
Those warriors might end up too similar.

I like to talk to templars with all mage parties, so I'd have to talk to them with just one person with me. That'd be odd.

Well, the problem is that you'd kinda be forced to always have that mage in your party (they're the only ones who can heal, and let's be honest, mages have the best AOE). That is, unless your PC is also a mage. And if you don't like that singular mage, well... too bad, I guess.
In DA:O we had Morrigan and Wynne. And while I liked both characters, I know many people who got tired of both of them fast. Personally, I played as a mage, so I never ran into that problem.
I like what they're doing in DA:I, with having 3 of each class. It makes it so you can switch out characters every once and a while. You don't have to stick with the same mage/rogue/tank ALL the time.
