Okay, I know I'm not the only one out there that periodically wishes for a Bioware style RPG in one setting or another. I thought it might be fun to make a thread for people to throw ideas into and say why they like them. Feel free to be a lot less or a lot more detailed than me:

Urban Fantasy:

I think that's the term. This one might just be because of the wave of Buffy/Angel nostalgia I've been experiencing (And a recent playthrough of VtM: Bloodlines is certainly involved), but I tend to enjoy the general idea of such settings: a chosen few entering into a shadowy world behind the world filled with monsters, conspiracies and secrets. It doesn't particularly matter to me whether or not the protagonist is human, but I love those settings that succeed in giving you the feeling that you've gone behind the curtain of the normal world, that you're privy to a secret most people couldn't handle.

And since I mentioned Buffy, I'll say I wouldn't mind a 'Once more, with Feeling' DLC mission for such a game B)

Victorian Steampunk

We're seeing steampunk settings emerge in a few other games. Dishonored was steampunk and the upcoming shooter "The Order: 1886" is using an alternate steampunk London setting. I'd love the chance to take my time and explore such a setting in a well crafted Bioware title, employing all manner of gadgetry and recruiting a disparate group of companions. Ideally, we'd have our own zeppelin.

Alternatively, I'd quite enjoy a dark gothic fantasy approach to a Victorian setting. I'm a fan of the older vampire novels: Dracula and Carmilla. I could definitely latch onto such a setting, partly for the same reasons as Urban Fantasy. Though generally, either setting could win my heart simply be virtue of letting me run about with a monocle and a top hat.

Traveler Sci-Fi

I don't actually know if this sort of premise has a proper name, but I'm thinking of Farscape and Stargate: Universe as I write this. The general idea is to take a contemporary person or persons and chuck them headlong into the unknown. A journey of discovery and exploration. Not throwing you into a setting like Mass Effect, but discovering it as you go along. Honestly, I'm not sure how such a structure would work for a Bioware RPG, but the very question of it intrigues me. I'd be curious to see how such a thing would work.

With the rise in popularity of comic book properties, I think Bioware could make a pretty good super-hero themed action-RPG. Become a Super-Hero or Super-Villain, etc. epic team ups and so on. The genre is rich enough at this point they could also do a deconstruction and it would be well-received (IMO), but with their recent turn towards "gritty" games, I think a change of pace with something more black and white and overall optimistic would be good.

I think an espionage-themed RPG from Bioware would be a pretty good idea. It's hard to believe that this milieu hasn't been exploited more often in games; beyond Alpha Protocol, there isn't much going on as far as RPG's are concerned.

Hm, I thought on that a bit too. "Gritty" has become so popular that it'd be refreshing to take a step back into something a bit simpler (And perhaps less full of itself that way). I'm not sure where that would leave player options, but it's an interesting direction to take.

Actually, I remember a Bioware dev mentioning that they had pitched such a game but got shot down sadly.

I love all your ideas op.

I would love for Bioware to do a gothic rpg or a sci-fi similar to stargate with exploration.

Jorji is telling me to suggest an East-Of-The-Wall Cold War setting.

I'd like to see Bioware tackle a modern-day supernatural or sci-fi story along the lines of X-Files or Fringe - i.e. one that could plausibly be taking place in the real world of today, only "under the radar" with most of the events eluding the general public's notice somehow.

Reminds me of psi ops. I liked that game.

A post-apocolyptic setting where you have to make moral decisions that are tied to your survival. Sort of like Book of Eli, or Fallout with and Open Palm/Closed fist sort of set up. You can pick up people and start a crew, or you can join up with a crew, or you can even try to survive alone. It could be a really cool game if it was done right. Though some people may feel that the idea is overdone. To spice it up, maybe you can be a person on a small human colony on a planet that is being colonized. Your character could have an important influence on how things go down on that colony. That's the sort of thing that I personally feel has a lot of potential, though the ideas in the OP were pretty cool.

A gritty superhero setting would also be pretty damn good.

What is project X by the way? No word on bioware's new IP?

No word, though rumor has it the words "Space Nuns" were thrown around, which I personally find a bit disappointing.

Maybe it's just right this moment, but I was really hoping for the Urban Fantasy idea.

That too, but it seems to indicate a Sci Fi setting. So that would rule out an interesting gothic or fantasy or steampunk setting.

So I'm a sad panda.

I do like the idea of managing a group of survivors in a post apocalyptic setting organized in a Bioware style. Unfortunately post apocalyptic settings are getting a bit tired these days, but perhaps if it was about the protagonist leading a settlement and trying to restart civilization it could be interesting. Just wandering the wastes trying to survive is a bit overplayed.

Sisters of Battle the RPG?

Only if I can play as the Tyranid Hive Tyrant or the Necron Overlord :D

Edit: In regards to the OP's suggestions, I like the idea of an Urban Fantasy. A BioWare game set in the Dresden Files universe would be pretty awesome.

Absolutely time-travel. But I don't want it until Bioware or another RPG studio can fully deliver my expectations of being able to alter and change the world and time periods based on time travel. If I change something in the past, it should alter the future in unpredictable ways. Basically, a modern, AAA westernRPG version of Chronotrigger.

It has so much potential for great consequences, divergence and reactivity, but my guess is, it will never happen because it will be too expensive and demanding to meet the kind of standards I have in my imagination.

Warhammer 40k rpg..

If power armour were as rare a sight in that as it should be, I'd be all for that.

Otherwise, how about a setting reminiscent of the Migration Period? An age of strife where the PC tries to forge their path amidst lands that are in constant flux, with various factions ranging from those that try to cling to their possessions, take the opportunity to wrest control for themselves, are trying to stay ahead of one or more tribes relentlessly pushing others before them, etc. PC's role would be less about "saving the world" but pick among this multitude of parties who they'd support, or just look out for themselves and watch what opportunities present themselves as events unfold and lands change hands almost constantly.

Tech-level need not be set, nor would it need to have too many elements typical of fantasy, if any - magic, creatures, etc.
