So, I just found out that both Dragon Age and Mass Effect were banned in the United Arab Emirates, likely for heterosexual and homosexual scenes. It's likely that DAI will be banned as well. I'm moving there at the end of the month and this is the worst news EVAH! No DAI? What will I do? I planned to hole up and play DAI rather than exploring my new country. Friends? Pshaw. New sights, meh. I'll make friends and see new places in the game!

Seriously, though, I'm really disappointed. I've heard there's a 'grey market' but I've never been one to walk the 'dark' side. I don't want to do anything that could get me into legal trouble and risk my visa. Gah! Will I be able to get my DAI fix or will I have to plan to play it on rare visits back to the states (thus, being an awful person and ignoring family)?

I haven't even moved yet and I'm already having culture shock.

I think this is better fit for Scuttlebut are other ARPGs banned over there? Might let you know the definitive reason why.

Just smuggle it in. I'm sure you'll be able to hack something or another and get it via steam.

I'm sure they won't set the gestapo onto you if you're just playing a banned game. It's not like you're buying it in mass and distributing it to the public illegally. They'll likely give you a warning for it if they ever caught you. And the chances are it'll be small in the end.

I can't imagine that this comes as a surprise. I mean, we're talking about a country where premarital sex can get you prison time, and hugging is public indecency.

Yeah, they have some stange laws. Cussing in public can get you a fine. Certain meds aren't allowed in. I'm having to switch my dog to a different seizure medication as they won't allow his meds to be brought in the country. But, other things that muslims aren't allowed to do, expats are. Alcohol use is not allowed for muslims but expats can get it, after jumping through a few hoops with a license. I haven't had time until now to check out video game restrictions.

lol, I'll be there for a few years. The money, it's all for the money. And, honestly, I'm looking forward to a new cultural experience despite some of the hassle. I won't live there forever though. Considering New Zealand as a retirement place.

Make sure your VPN is encrypted through the proper channels. The communication between the download and the VPN server can be okay but the encryption between your VPN and your computer should be protected to prevent from sniffing.

No problem! Any regime that bans a product because of that should be under scrutiny. I hope I read your reviews on the internet and I hope you enjoy it!

I'm bookmarking this thread so I can check out your link later. That's awesome!

I'm thinking about starting a blog about an atheist's experiences in Abu Dhabi to talk about issues such as these. Although, I'm not sure if I'll actually publish anything while I'm there to avoid trouble. It might just be something I'll write about and release later.  There is just so much that I won't be aware of until I get there and I think it will be interesting to chronicle those experiences. When I moved to the small town in the south where I'm at, I started an atheist group here with a bit of trepidation and it went great. Didn't have many problems from the locals although I got a few hostile reactions. I won't be doing anything like that over there as I'm keeping my religious opinions on the down low.

No problem! I kind of understand your pain.

I am a bisexual from Zambia, If I go back I have a possibility to get locked up for 14 years at least. Even from the atheist front, no one understands  and I am usually ostracized. I am in Canada, but there is nothing I can do but stay here for the most.

It's crazy cause people tell me "you don't know what I go through" and I'm like I probably do 10 times even worser.

You just have to be strong.

I get what you are saying. I might not like that I won't feel comfortable expressing atheist views over there but I think being unable to express your bisexual identity is a whole 'nother level of wrong. 14 years in prison is crazy. You sound very strong! Hats off to you!

Disobeying the state is a serious crime in the UAE, even saying that you don't like all the restrictions is itself restricted, and can count as a crime if you're not careful.

Its suppose to be a pretty neat place though, and there are some in power trying to improve things. How successful they will likely be though, is another matter entirely.

Well looks like Torrents are banned in the UAE, but it may be possible to bypass the UAE's Internet Management protocols.

I know games get banned in Australia and gamers still get a hold of them. However they dont have extreme things compared to UAE apperently. Wish you well over there.

Well, if I don't get to play it over there, I'll just have to wait. We'll see. DA and ME are the only two games I really care about playing. Won't have TV over there either (don't have it here anyway just download shows I want to watch) as there's nothing worth watching. More free time for real life stuff which isn't a bad thing. Still, *sniff*.

You can tie the game at the foot of Pigeon and .... I'm kidding  :P

No member of your family will visit you ? some of them could bring the game to you, or you can order it on demand like FedEx ... and play offline.

still do not get in trouble, forget about the blog, it's like my grandmother used to say "peace is priceless".

Good Luck! maia0704  ;)

Considering New Zealand as a retirement place.

Might wanna rethink that, don't they run the same game market as Australia who also bans everything that's not Pokémon?
