City Elves have the same reasons as the Casteless Dwarves probably.

Casteless dwarves have history. Their families were born in Orzamarr, their ancient ancestors were from ancient thaigs. It is their homeland. Plus the fear of sky
City elves, though? Human cities have nothing to do with elven history

But like the Casteless Dwarves, it is where their family lived and live. Their history is there, their loved ones are there.

Not to mention while letting the occasional elf leave may be tolerated, I highly doubt the human nobility will look kindly at them all leaving.

This is why I could see the Dalish, especially Velanna wanting to get their people back.

Dalish have every reason to despise humans and distrust city elves who also show no knowledge about their wild relatives. In fact I will never understand city elves: humans treat you worse than ****, you live in a dump and you stay because?.. It's better to live in a forest and die remembering who your true people are than spend your whole life as servants
People are all for mage rebellion and blowing up buildings with defenceless civilians cause revoluzion but if Dalish want to be left alone they call them pricks?
Double standards, I say

Dying of starvation and exposure is a pretty horrible death. Living in a forest is an automatic death sentence for a bunch of malnourished poor elves who don't know anything about survival or farming.

Dalish are willing to help and teach those who are ready to learn, like Pol. They don't need additional hungry mouths, but if one can prove to be helpful, they will gladly take them in.
No one said that Dalish lived happily and easily though, but they at least belong to no one but themselves

So they'll only help their kind if that elf is willing to sacrifice their beliefs for the Dalish. Maybe that's why a lot of City Elves don't join. They want a better life, but don't want to have to be Dalish.

The casteless are paranoid of the sky and Orzamarr is the city of dwarves
City elves know how the world works, know that neither sky nor earth will swallow them, shemlem cities have nothing to do with their culture
Ideally both Dalish and city elves should unite and find a way to peacefully but not pathetically exist near humans. That's the life, humans aren't going anywhere.
But city elves' ignorance and Dalish elves' pride won't allow this

What beliefs? In the Maker, the human God? In the dirty dump full of rats and casually destroyed and raided by human lords?
Elves are not humans, never were, never will be. The place of elvhenan in human history is either slavery or secondary citizenship

Isolate themselves from the humans? That's a great idea! It worked the last time right?

There are others things than the sky that they know will swallow them though.

So they should just suck it up and believe what the Dalish do? Sounds like trading one master for another to me.

Living in the dump and having almost no rights and no resources? What a great idea? It's working for elves right now, isn't it?
Woops, no, it's not
There is difference between isolation and living near, but separately. Not to mention that was again humans' fault

Dalish beliefs are truly elvhen beliefs. Whether you like it or not.
Not masters, brothers and sisters. Like Pol and Zatharian's First

And Tevinter beliefs are truly human beliefs. Should all humans go back to worshiping the Old Gods?

And having to sacrifice your personal views and beliefs in order to exist in a society is being subservient to said society.

Tevinter is not the first human culture. Lots of human tribes were never a part of the Empire

How hunting, helping others to survive and learning elven lore is betraying any beliefs? Nothing more, nothing less
Besides it is all about choice. Don't like Dalish? Sure, rot in the alienage based on Jewish reservations. Such a happy place...
Just don't blame others for not taking the initiative

And the Dalish are not the first elven culture. We don't even know if the Arlathan culture is the oldest for the elves.

Because the City Elves may actually feel differently on things.  Like for example they believe in the Maker over the Elven Pantheon. Their choices shouldn't be limited to "believe what you want but rot in the slums" or "sacrifice your beliefs and live in the forests". The City Elves deserve more than that after all they've been through.

Forcible conversion and being servants? Huh, that sounds awfully similar to what they were doing before. There wouldn't be racism, which is obviously substantial, but being subordinate to a different culture that wants to assimilate them shouldn't be what the CEs settle for in the end.

Not to mention that the Dalish can't possibly absorb an entire Alienage of elves. They'd all starve.

It's the only elven culture we know. That's not all, but it's something. You may headcanon whether you want but the canon won't change

Then they're more human than elven. Might as well cut off pointy ears. Somebody has to remember. If the city elves don't want to, the Dalish will.
No one forced them to live there. They are not technically slaves. They chose themselves to live alongside people who despise them and do not see as equal because of race. The Dalish have their own problems to deal with so helping those who do not respect what they stand for is out of this question. This is not charity
And city elves have no one to blame but themselves... And humans, of course

Servants? What kind of nonsense is that? All Dalish learn how to help their clan. That's how life in the wilds work. One has to be helpful to their people regardless of anything. Everyone has to hunt, take care of halla, be able to do physical work and clean the camp
That's what a family is

Well, do they have to? Do they own anything to city elves? No, they don't. They can help because they're relatives, but there is no obligation

And Tevinter is the oldest human culture we know of that had a religion. They are the oldest culture we know of other than "the human tribes came across the ocean from another continent".

Didn't realize people were identified solely by their belief system according to you.

Again, they live there because their family lives there. Home is where you are surrounded by those who care about you. The Dalish elves only care about other Dalish elves. Unless you become them, they leave you to fend for yourself. Besides if you think the humans will just allow the elves to leave en mass, and thus lose a huge labor force, you're fooling yourself. They may not be slaves, but they are only one step above it. And many not even that much.

I say the City Elves can also blame the ancient Dalish elves for picking the fight in the first place by invading Orlais.

You can be helpful to a group without believing in the same religion as them. I point to our entire planet pretty much as an example.

Hopefully the City Elves can be free and set up their own culture some day. And like with the Warden and Hawke, I'll take any chance I can as the Inquisitor and any future protagonists to do so.

I wouldn't mind Valenna returning, though I'd like this to be affected by whether or not she's made a Grey Warden.
