I've always found it particularly likely that the Keepers were the first race "dominated" by the Leviathans. We know that the Leviathans most likely came from a planet with a sapient race on land, which they dominated and eventually used to ascend to the stars and form their galactic empire over other races of the galaxy. The Reapers built the Citadel, and the Keepers are the organic caretakers of the Citadel. Whatever they are, they are likely as old as the Citadel itself. Would it not be poetic, in a way, if the Reapers used the first slave species of the Leviathans - or a genetic derivative of it much like the Collectors are derived from the Protheans - to run the Citadel?

But unfortunately, there is no evidence for this. It would have been an interesting origin for them though, because otherwise they are just some random alien species, either corrupted or created, that was chosen to be the caretakers of the Citadel. Womp Womp.

EDIT: it appears other people in this thread have had this idea too.
